Prompted by having to do it this morning. The slimy textures, the tangled hairs of various lengths, the sulphurous odour. Just revolts me 🤢

Is there a better way?

Or, is there a worse household job?

No it's not. But that's only because only I use that shower so it's all my hair!

mybraindoesntwork · 06/09/2024 22:39

Do they still let water sit to stop the odours coming up from the drains? I’ve noticed that if our cleaners are particularly thorough the bathroom smells as there isn’t any water in the drain.

You should be able to leave the plastic cup inside the drain filled with water, the shower shroom should sit on top.

TheChosenTwo · 06/09/2024 22:42

It’s a dh job in our house! He does it when he notices the water is draining slowly. The dds do their own shower room but I’m grateful he does ours because it seems like a minging job 🫣

Lolatusernamesuggestions · 06/09/2024 22:51

I was sent this meme once by DH, obviously meant as a joke but taken as a passive aggressive nudge for being a woman with long hair.

No. Toady I had to wipe poo off the plunger cos our toilet keeps getting blocked.Thats the worst job

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 06/09/2024 23:02

I need a new one of them for our shower.
I ordered be off Amazon but it didn't fit

frugalkitty · 06/09/2024 23:12

I kill the 'shower rat' every week so it's never that bad. My least favourite job is dusting the wooden blinds. Not a horrible job, I just hate doing it.

Yellow2024 · 06/09/2024 09:23

I do hate this job but as it's once a week I suck it up. However my worse one is cleaning the sinking after washing up. The soggy food makes me heave and as it has to be done more regularly this tops my list!

I pour my washing water through an old small sieve I keep specifically for the purpose. Can empty it into the food waste afterwards.

Fizbosshoes · 07/09/2024 00:10

Washing up after a roast dinner far exceeds this as an arduous or horrible chore!
We have a dishwasher but several of the (greasiest) roasting pans don't really fit in it. It takes possibly 25 min to wash up v about a minute to get the hair out of the shower trap.

25thCenturyQuaker · 07/09/2024 00:28

Cleaning the shower trap is up there, but the worst for me in recent years was unblocking the drain outside the kitchen. Everything drains into it, the sink, washing machine and dishwasher, so I wasn't best pleased to open the back door to an inch of grey, stinking, slimy water washing across the patio.

It turned out that a twig had fallen through the grate and jammed itself across the pipe, and this had been enough to cause a gradual accumulation of small leaves, food debris, slimy washing machine gunk and God only knows what else to block the pipe completely.

I unblocked it with a borrowed drain rod, and honestly, the stench was absolutely indescribable, and genuinely caused me to retch. I'm feeling a bit nauseous again just thinking about it!

Heelworkhero · 07/09/2024 00:32

It’s not my worst job as I get my DH to do it. It’s the only household job he puts gloves on for!

That's very bad too! But although it is horrible, it is a rare job - unlike the evil sulphurous shower hair creature that regrows every few weeks 😭

Interesting suggestion that immac or similar is the answer.
Any others use this method?

invisiblecat · 07/09/2024 11:25

I've just unravelled hundreds of yards of DD's long hair out of the brush attachment on my Shark hand-held vacuum. It took me half an hour and the help of a pointy skewer and some scissors. That is not a task I want to repeat in a hurry.

I have tried Immac a few times in the past, but didn't get on with it. Perhaps I was doing it wrong, but I had to squeeze/press the Immac into the nooks and crannies of the hair trap, where the hair gets tangled up, i.e. I still had to touch all the gross bits. And then it didn't always work on the tougher hairs (DH, I'm looking at you Hmm). And then what was left was still the most stubborn tangled hairs plus the eggy-smelling slime plus slimy stale Immac 🤢

Ewwwww... no,

we just use veet/nair as our hair removal method. We use it every week or so, and are 2 of us doing so, it keeps the drain hair free... no need to put it down the drain.

Thisoldheartofmine · 08/09/2024 11:08

I have just received for our old inherited shower.
Pack of 40 for £6.
I'm hopeful.

I have the same shower trap in OP's post and hate it with a passion and have just bought the shower shroom for £20 from amazon that @Bey linked to and although it is nice and neat and fits well I now have a nasty drain smell in the shower room.

Has anyone else had this problem and what is the answer?

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 10/09/2024 13:25

I live in southern Spain and the worst job in summer is coming down to find a cockroach in the morning. They're usually dead so can sweep them up at least. Finding the occasional live one is worse, obvs.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 10/09/2024 13:26

Finding them live in the bathroom when you have just sat down for a wee is worse still.

UtterlyOtterly · 10/09/2024 13:49

It is my Saturday morning treat. I keep a screwdriver in the bathroom cabinet just for that one purpose.

dementedpixie · 10/09/2024 13:53

I also have a bathroom screwdriver 😆

Catsmere · 11/09/2024 00:31

I only have my own hair to deal with, and I make sure I get rid of the strands when I shower, so dealing with the shower trap isn't really a thing.

My worst job is trying to clean the tracks of sliding doors and windows. I've never found any tools, let alone vacuum nozzles, that fit in and pick up the dust and dead insects and grease. Those things are breeding grounds for mould. I can't get down on my knees to do them, either, since I've arthritis.
