Er, I don't

AmyDudley · 01/09/2024 13:11

Well I don't decorate for autumn - and I never heard of anyone doing it, but I'm an old fogey and know nothing. If you have some lovely things you want to put out then go for it, I don;t think there is an official starting date for autumn, but I'd guess it is when the weather and the leaves start turning which would be end of sept/ beginning of oct.
But you do whatever makes you feel happy, and if that is putting your things out now then who cares what anyone else thinks?

Expo23 · 01/09/2024 13:12

Meteorological Autumn starts Sept 1st so it works to do it today if you want to. However, it's a bit early for me. Official Autumn is Sept 22nd so I will do it then.

mushpush · 01/09/2024 13:12

Already done 😂

PersephonePomegranate23 · 01/09/2024 13:13

Equinox is 22nd September

Vikina · 01/09/2024 13:13

I didn't know this was a thing. I only do decorations of any sort at Christmas.

StTola · 01/09/2024 13:14

Tell us more, OP. Where do these things go — inside or outside? The only time I’ve seen people ‘decorating for autumn’ was when I lived briefly in a New Jersey suburb in the mid-90s and people put random things on their porches.

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 01/09/2024 13:14

What does decorating for autumn entail? I've never heard of such a thing.
Is it a new thing that some Instagram "influencers" do?

GrandesRandonnees · 01/09/2024 13:18

Well the mince pies are out in Sainsbury’s so I’d get a move on if I were you.

PS ‘decorating for autumn’ isn’t a thing, despite what Instagram influencers tell you.

For me, it is changing some of the curtains to a more seasonal tone that fit autumn and winter (merlot). The throws, cushions and doormat as well. Changing vases and fairy lights. I have a seasonal display in the entrance hall, so that too.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 01/09/2024 13:19

I have a garland over the mantle piece which I change with the seasons, so I suppose I decorate for autumn. I will change it when the trees in the gardens start to turn, so it matches them. It stays up until it is time for the winter one, when all the leaves have fallen.
the flowers in the vases ( many fake but not all) change to chrysanthemum fro dahlias when the garden does, too.

It looks to me as if autumn is going to be early this tear, some of the trees are definitely yellowing, so it will probably be by the end of September.

Do other people you know do this? Changing curtains and the doormat, I find that astonishing!

Stirmish · 01/09/2024 13:23

Is this an American thing ?

sonjadog · 01/09/2024 13:25

What do you include in your seasonal displays? I am curious about this now.

Growlybear83 · 01/09/2024 13:26

What decorating do people do for autumn? I've never heard of this! Is it another bizarre American custom?

NashvilleQueen · 01/09/2024 13:26

I changed cushions and throws yesterday and got some more candles out

TuesdayWhistler · 01/09/2024 13:27

Who the fuck has convinced people they have to buy tat to decorate for each season?

Is it that Dunelm?
Do I has to have a word?

Oi... Dunelm... Nooooo...

🤪

Still summer till 22nd

bergamotvetiverthyme · 01/09/2024 13:27

We decorate for Mabon which is 22nd September, the kids usually decorate few days on advance

Anjelika · 01/09/2024 13:29

Every day's a school day on here! Can't imagine for a minute having the time or inclination to change my house decorations each season. Same cushions and curtains here all year round.

redwinechocolateandsnacks · 01/09/2024 13:29

Absolutely Dunelm..and The Range, M&S and the rest. No wonder we all live with underlying stress.

It's not really about other people so I would guess not. I tend to meet up out of the house with people. I just like a change and to make the place look nice/welcome in the seasons. I do a lot of work from home, feel holed up here at times, so a change can be as good as a rest.

jannier · 01/09/2024 13:32

I didn't know anybody in the UK did this apart from a bit of Halloween I wouldn't think about it while it's still as hot as our summer maybe October.

usernother · 01/09/2024 13:32

Decorate for autumn? Why? Are you American OP?
