I have been carefully cutting out paper leaves and moulding papier mache pumpkins since June, I do this to fill my time as I have no real interests, friends or hobbies🙄

September is still summer! It’s 26 deg here today - and that’s without any sun on the thermometer.

All I ever do is a pumpkin in the window on 31st October, to let trick or treaters know it’s OK to knock. I did once knit a Halloween wreath for the Gdcs’ house, but they certainly wouldn’t put it up before mid October.

26C. Shock Where are you?! In the Midlands it's 18-19C. Is that down south?

AxolotlEars · 01/09/2024 14:07

We do it anytime from now.

Yet another thing for already stressed mums to worry that they're not doing properly, by the sound of things.

Not really, no one says you have to do it. Who cares? Just do or don't do what you want with your own house.

Yes, outer SW London. I was going to sit in the garden but it’s too hot!

nextdoorconundrum · 01/09/2024 14:08

I have just put my lovely silk birthday nightie/slip away and got my flannelette jimjams out ... there ! Sorted for Autumn 'decorating' . 😄

BeaRF75 · 01/09/2024 14:08

FFS, I don't even "decorate for" Christmas, let alone autumn 😂

LoneHydrangea · 01/09/2024 14:09

Another naff American influence.

Totally agree with you... September is summer. I have no idea why everyone is in such a hurry for winter.

twentysevendresses · 01/09/2024 14:09

I lived in Germany for many years...it's definitely 'a thing' there (and in the Netherlands).

The shop displays are simply beautiful, with each new season being represented. You can buy the most amazing 'seasonal home decor', and almost every home will be changed 4 times a year. I had 4 big storage boxes in my cellars with all my decs in (actually, there were several 'winter/Christmas ones, obviously, as this was when we went 'all out' 🤣)

When I moved back to the UK I vowed to carry on this 'seasonal display' thing, as I loved it so much...sad to report that I did not do this 🤣🤣

I still have my boxes, but they are now in school and I pimp up my classroom instead 😍

28 degrees here :) SW London. Away to have picnic in Richmond Park.

Quite. We were sitting on the patio earlier and had to come in as it’s too hot!

Keepchangingyourname · 01/09/2024 14:02

Oh crap . Is this something else I’m ment to be doing but failing miserably at ?

No. I’ve got plain white bedding and whatever flowers I find in the garden (none at all sometimes) and reckon I’ve nailed it.

ClareWilsonNS · 01/09/2024 14:10

The pile of crap by the front door will soon change from flip flops to muddy boots. Is that what you mean?

suburburban · 01/09/2024 14:11

Don't think I would bother

Maybe thicker duvet at end of September

Loonaandalf · 01/09/2024 14:11

I would say as soon as it starts to feel like autumn, I’m still feeling it’s quite summery right now, especially today in the SE. When I lived in Canada they would put Halloween decorations up around mid September.

Olika · 01/09/2024 14:11

My friend in Germany always decorates her house according to the season. I just decorate for Xmas and Easter.

Octavia64 · 01/09/2024 14:11

Today!

I bought some fabric pumpkins at a craft sale yesterday and they are now in my living room.

I am also sitting outside with an ice cream as it's about 25 and full sun so summer isn't really over in my book....

I have a German friend I’ve known many years and neither she nor her parents do this.

What decorating do people do for autumn? I've never heard of this! Is it another bizarre American custom?

"Autumn" stuff in Wilko and B&M:

B&M:

According to the recent thread on Halloween bedding, seems some folk can't get enough of this stuff.

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 01/09/2024 14:12

I love decorating for the seasons. I feel the 1st September is a bit early as we can still have some warm sunshine, unlikely I know 😂. I'll put out stuff half way through September and keep it out until beginning of November. I'll add to it with some Halloween stuff nearer the time.

slideoverhere · 01/09/2024 14:12

We got married in Autumn 25 years ago so we could honeymoon in New England and see the Fall Foliage which was absolutely stunning. I tend to change out a few things to more autumnal colours because it makes me happy. I never decorate for Halloween. It doesn't have to be a huge deal and it doesn't mean spending money every year on new things.

It isn't remotely stressful, maybe a couple of cushion covers, swap out some ornaments. I do the same thing at Christmas. I would say 15th September once the children are back at school and it feels like autumn term.

Enjoy yourself @justflewinfromthewindycity and know lots of us do it too and have been for many, many years. The shops are full of it so people must be walking round with their eyes closed. I watch lots of decorate with me videos on youtube for inspiration.

ThisLoftySquid · 01/09/2024 14:12

'Decorating' for autumn is a bit of an exaggeration, but I do put extra throws on the sofa and have more candles around as the nights draw in. Not yet though, I'm still holding out for an Indian Summer (even though it's pouring with rain here today).

Chipsahoy · 01/09/2024 14:13

To answer your question OP, I will do mine next week. We had a beautiful summer day yesterday but it’s 14c here in my corner of Scotland, kids have been back to school
for two weeks, feels autumnal to me.
