What.... why?

I suppose if you want to take the time, effort and money then fine. I tend to change my perfumes with the seasons so I suppose changing your cushion coverrs is just a version of that really

feellikeanalien · 01/09/2024 14:14

Blimey. I struggle just to keep the house tidy, never mind seasonal decorating. I do still have the fairy lights round the fireplace that I put up last Christmas if that counts.

ElBandito · 01/09/2024 14:15

My grandmother used to 'decorate for autumn'. What this actually meant was she changed the curtains to the thick winter ones (and washed and put away the light weight summer curtains). Moved the dining table away from the window to the other side of the room as it was too cold to sit close to the window in winter. Got the blankets and draught excluders out of the cupboards. Took the deck chairs out of the lean-to and put them in the garage.

CurlewKate · 01/09/2024 14:15

When I lived in a cold house with curtains, I had summer and winter curtains. Is that the same thing?

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 01/09/2024 14:17

I used to work for a homewares retailer. Their busiest month is October not December because of all the people that decorate for autumn/winter. Some customers had decorations/ different homewares for every season. Add shein and temu selling this ridiculousness and the retailers really are winning.

It makes me happy when the nights start drawing in.
Nice candle burning, nice throw and cushions
Few little pumpkins
Lots of sad things in the world ...don't think it hurts anyone

You should do it today if it makes you happy.

I live in an EU country where lots of families decorate for each season, usually with a mix of natural stuff collected from the forest and ceramics and wooden items they bring out every year. Porches, doorsteps, wreaths on doors and window sills seem to be very commonly decorated for each season and extra added for a week or so before Christmas and Easter.

I don't do it but it's nice to see as long as you're not using disposable plastic tat (which here a few people do, especially at Christmas and Easter).

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 01/09/2024 13:23

Do other people you know do this? Changing curtains and the doormat, I find that astonishing!

Surely you clean and wash things sometimes and need to put a replacement out.

Timeforacuppanow · 01/09/2024 14:18

Weirdly my mam used to do this to a point but it was more changing the curtains to more autumn/winter ones. She did it every year then again towards the middle of Spring. I’m sure it was something people did years ago as I know my grandparents both did it. But definitely nothing more than that

I think @justflewinfromthewindycity is getting a hard time. How many people here buy bunches of daffodils in the spring or plant bulbs in pots for an indoor display or get cyclamen or poinsettia for Christmas or have a bowl of horse chestnuts or pinecones sitting out from walks with their kids in autumn or have some flowers for cutting in their garden? It doesn't have to be about plastic tat.

It mostly IS plastic rat though.

@RainbowZebraWarrior did you make the felted pumpkins and If possible can I see a picture, I do love autumn decorations ☺️

Edited

Here are some of them, not quite displayed properly, yet. We made about half a dozen last year, along with some felted toadstools. This week I'm going to felt some acorns and conkers.

(They are currently sitting on top of a whole frame of honey in a glass box, in case anyone is wondering. It's for our stall at our village scarecrow Festival next weekend)

Yes, outer SW London. I was going to sit in the garden but it’s too hot!

That is quite hot! For September! Shock

I believe we may have thunderstorms later I hope so!

TroysMammy · 01/09/2024 14:21

I like seeing autumn stuff in shops but I'm not going to waste my time, money and space decorating for Autumn/Halloween/Christmas (yes I'm a Grinch and have the socks and a Bah! Humbug hat)/Valentine's/Spring/Easter/Summer. Commercialism at it's worst and people are sucked into the idea. I bet the people who think they should are the ones that sulkily whinged when they were children "but everyone in the class has one". When in reality they didn't.

Comedycook · 01/09/2024 14:05

The twelfth of never.

😂😂😂 Yeah this

Summerisgoinggreat · 01/09/2024 14:22

İs it plastic orange leaf garlands with a pumpkin shaped fruit bowl and a grey wooden plaque which says 'wolly hats and hugs' hanging on the wall? İf so, I'm out.

supportpangolin · 01/09/2024 14:22

wellno · 01/09/2024 13:39

Yet another thing for already stressed mums to worry that they're not doing properly, by the sound of things.

Indeed. I'm waiting for the lists of autumn themed activities and requests for suggestions for filling "countdown to autumn" boxes to appear from those worried about whether they have "done enough" for their children and teens this autumn...

Toastcrumbsinsofa · 01/09/2024 14:22

I’ve got cobwebs on my living room ceiling and a pigeon has pooed near the window, if that’s the sort of thing you mean?

MultiplaLight · 01/09/2024 14:22

sunseaandsoundingoff · 01/09/2024 14:18

Surely you clean and wash things sometimes and need to put a replacement out.

You have to clean curtains?!

Jokes aside, no I wash them every couple of years on a sunny day and rehang the same day.

Trinity69 · 01/09/2024 14:22

Can barely be bothered to decorate for Christmas. Do not decorate for any other reason.

Lacdulancelot · 01/09/2024 14:23

I ventured into TKMaxx last week, it was full of Autumn decorations.
I nearly bought towels and tea towels with harvest designs and then I had a sharp word with myself.

@RainbowZebraWarrior they are fabulous and I love that you've made them yourself too ☺️

BurntBroccoli · 01/09/2024 14:24

Never been a thing for me! Halloween when the kids were little yes.

ShinyPrettyThings87 · 01/09/2024 14:25

I'll be starting this week. I needle felted pumpkins last year and have a few that I've bought here and there to go out. Starting to slowly take summer blankets away and wash and change into the cosier ones. Still have the summer duvet on as it's still quite warm at night.

Weird how people who don't partake in seasonal decorating like to look down on those that do. It's not about commercialism for me, I just love the seasons and adapt to them. Doesn't take much effort and alot can be done for free/cheap but I enjoy doing it 🤷

TheSquareMile · 01/09/2024 14:26

I would suggest the beginning of October, really.

It would look most appropriate then.

I get the feeling that this September isn't going to be particularly autumnal, rather the last of the summery days.

user1492757084 · 01/09/2024 14:26

How nice that you enjoy this, Op. And that you make time to put out little pumpkins and candles.
You should decorate when the cold air starts invading the evenings.

A couple of times I have decorated for Autumn by default.
I left the Christmas tree in the corner and by Autumn it had orange needles, some falling on the floor.

SweetcornFritter · 01/09/2024 14:27

I saw a window in my neighborhood that already had the Halloween decorations up. As for my autumnal decor I shall collect a huge sack of fallen leaves in a few weeks time and empty them out in the living room for that autumny vibe.
