What does decorating for autumn entail? I've never heard of such a thing.
Is it a new thing that some Instagram "influencers" do?

Edited

Yes

PickledMuffin · 01/09/2024 13:48

Do people decorate according to the seasons 😳

EI12 · 01/09/2024 13:49

When you say 'decorate for autumn' do you mean winter (i.e. heavy, lined) curtains? I never remove them for summer, only for dry-cleaning. So we are in autumn mode all the time!

Luckyblackcat13 · 01/09/2024 13:50

If you mean getting my heavy duty waterproof jacket, boots, hats, windscreen covers and reinforcing fences then it starts today!!
If you mean tiny pumpkin lights, pretend leaves & willow wreaths then never. I get scented candles out and thrown on more blankets and switch on the many fairy lights in my home. I am in very cold West Coast Scotland and it’s summer from April - August only!!

Crickets7 · 01/09/2024 13:51

'Lovely Autumn decorative bits' are not words that should be uttered

DilemmaDelilah · 01/09/2024 13:51

I don't decorate for autumn, spring or summer. I also don't decorate for winter, just a little bit for Christmas. In my world, I can't imagine why anyone would! Isn't life expensive enough anyway without adding on decorating for different seasons?

Numbersarefun · 01/09/2024 13:51

People used to change the curtains or add a thick liner in the winter because it got colder - before double glazing and central heating.

Lifestooshort71 · 01/09/2024 13:51

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 01/09/2024 13:23

Do other people you know do this? Changing curtains and the doormat, I find that astonishing!

I presumed the post was a joke but what do I know?

invisiblecat · 01/09/2024 13:52

I have a pumpkin-shaped scented candle, and another one that looks like an acorn. Bought them both in the January sales and they've been on the fireplace ever since.

I'm getting this all wrong, aren't I?

KeepScrapingBy · 01/09/2024 13:52

I don’t decorate for Autumn but I do change the wipe clean tablecloth in the kitchen. Currently still using the Summer one (lemons) until mid September or whenever it gets cooler. Then I’ll change to the Autumn leaves one. That’s about it for me!

I have a seasonal wreath for the door in autumnal tones, a similar garland for the mantlepiece and a few colourful pumpkins.

Probably a few weeks yet, it's still summer in my garden.

Presumably made of plastic/polyester so as far from natural Autumn as possible.

justflewinfromthewindycity · 01/09/2024 13:53

No I'm not American.
I just put a nice throw out and candles and I've got a few nice pumpkins and diffuser's.
It just makes me happy
My late mum used to do it when I was little just to make the house cosy (changing cushions etc )
There wasn't anything out in the 90s like now but it's just a little tradition I've carried on.

Nothing crazy like the influencers where everything is pumpkins

For me, it is changing some of the curtains to a more seasonal tone that fit autumn and winter (merlot). The throws, cushions and doormat as well. Changing vases and fairy lights. I have a seasonal display in the entrance hall, so that too.

Oh how nice! (Honest, not sarky, response.) Do you put up thicker curtains in the autumn/winter?

AsYouWiiiiiiiiiiiiish · 01/09/2024 13:54

Autumn decor October 1st to December 1st for me. Then I start doing Christmas

Nannyfannybanny · 01/09/2024 13:55

It's 28c here in the SE UK,am hiding in the shade in-between doing the washing. When the clocks fall back late October, I put up thick lined wool floor length curtains, keep the warmth in cold out. My light coloured cushion covers go away, and fluffy warm colours come out, throws on the beds and sofas. My vases of silk flowers go from summer blooms to gold/orange leaves, berries. In my 70s never watched an influencer. I just like the cosy vibe, scented candles, side lights.

Skyrainlight · 01/09/2024 13:55

I don't decorate for autumn but I do start adding cosy lights as the days get shorter, but I base that on amount of light and not on a date.

Who the fuck has convinced people they have to buy tat to decorate for each season?

Is it that Dunelm?
Do I has to have a word?

Oi... Dunelm... Nooooo...

🤪

Still summer till 22nd

🤣🤣🤣

Hazydetailonlife · 01/09/2024 13:55

I life to waft around in my autumn cloak from the equinox. Anything else would jam my chakra. Be careful OP this is a big decision.

Alevelnamechange · 01/09/2024 13:55

Like a pp we have a garland/wreath that changes with the seasons. We put the autumn one up last week. Yesterday I switched the neon dining summer dining candles with the orange and mustard autumn ones... so slowly we're welcoming the new season in.

SwanSong1 · 01/09/2024 13:56

Never! Why would any one decorate just because it's Autumn? How bizarre!

GigiAnnna · 01/09/2024 13:57

Around now. I don't change curtains but I have a pumpkin tablecloth and I change my candles, cushions and ornaments to Halloween/ Autumn theme ones. I put up Halloween decorations the week before, then take then down when it's over, but I leave out my Autumn stuff till I decorate for Christmas.

JaninaDuszejko · 01/09/2024 13:57

I think @justflewinfromthewindycity is getting a hard time. How many people here buy bunches of daffodils in the spring or plant bulbs in pots for an indoor display or get cyclamen or poinsettia for Christmas or have a bowl of horse chestnuts or pinecones sitting out from walks with their kids in autumn or have some flowers for cutting in their garden? It doesn't have to be about plastic tat.

3peassuit · 01/09/2024 13:58

I put a couple of warm throws over the back of the sofas when I think it’s a bit chilly but not cold enough to put the heating on. I’m not sure if it counts as decorating but that’s as far as it goes in my house.

Tittyfilarious · 01/09/2024 13:58

I don't decorate but a lady who lives around the corner does and the autumn wreath is on the door and ornaments of gonks and pumpkins, pinecones and a candle on the window ledge so I guess it's now 😯

justflewinfromthewindycity · 01/09/2024 13:59

I'm in the north east it's 15 degrees today with a chilly wind and heavy rain
We haven't had much summer up here
