Oh how nice! (Honest, not sarky, response.) Do you put up thicker curtains in the autumn/winter?

They are heavier yes so help in a practical way too! It also gives me the prompt to dry clean the curtains by the patio too as they take a battering over summer!

Decorate for Autumn?! What?!!?!?!?! You can just about get me to decorate for Christmas I won't be decorating for anything else. Never heard of decorating for Autumn though?
I despair at this world. Cheap plastic tat that will be in landfill before long half the time.

God there’s some miserable people in this world.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 01/09/2024 14:00

I've just washed the blankets, winter coats etc and got the uniform ready for school starting back up on Tuesday.

Have spent the school holidays 'spring' cleaning /clearing out.

Today I'm making an autumn wreath. The felted pumpkins I made last year are already out in the hallway. I'm sorting though my candle stash and deciding which ones to bring out for Autumn, and which to keep for Christmas. The Christmas ones will come back out in November.

Chipsahoy · 01/09/2024 14:00

A lot of playing dumb on this post. Must be walking around with eyes closed if you haven’t seen the autumn decor in the shops.
I’ve been decorating for autumn for well over a decade. It’s the done thing in the USA and my dh and children are American. I used to bring over decorations after our visits but now we have choice here it’s fab.

For me it makes me happy, it’s a nod to my husband’s heritage and traditions, but ultimately because autumn is full of horrific trauma anniversaries, it has helped make me look forward to a season I once had to be drugged out my mind to handle.
We all do things for different reasons, if we want to decorate for every season (I do) then why not? No need for sneering or blaming Instagram for it.

Alevelnamechange · 01/09/2024 14:00

For us it's not about buying tat, it's about welcoming a new season, leaning into the colder darker months rather than just abiding them.

Just as we have a small bowl of shells that DD found at the beach on a side table, we'll have a small bowl of pinecones she finds at the park.

Stunt pineapple for summer

So?
Stunt Hedgehogs and dead leaves for autumn?

Stunt pumpkins with fireworks shoved in? 🎃 🧨 🤷‍♀️🤣

OIlive · 01/09/2024 14:01

My mum used to swap over the curtains from the summer ones (flowery and thinner) to winter ones (velvet) as it was cold where we stayed (NE Scotland) but that's the only thing I've ever come across. That was for practical reasons.

Never heard of "decorations"

Humanswarm · 01/09/2024 14:01

Say what?

justflewinfromthewindycity · 01/09/2024 14:01

It makes me happy when the nights start drawing in.
Nice candle burning, nice throw and cushions
Few little pumpkins
Lots of sad things in the world ...don't think it hurts anyone

Absolutely Dunelm..and The Range, M&S and the rest. No wonder we all live with underlying stress.

Aye. And no wonder the planet is fucked.

2chocolateoranges · 01/09/2024 14:02

Decorate for autumn 😂😂😂😂

Never heard of that in my whole 48 years on this earth.

Keepchangingyourname · 01/09/2024 14:02

Oh crap . Is this something else I’m ment to be doing but failing miserably at ?

Iloveeastereggs2020 · 01/09/2024 14:03

I’ve got some bunting and I think I’m going to wait until the 22nd but if it brings you joy, put it up!! 💓

Like others, I don't. I do decorate for Halloween though. (About a week before,) and do all the trick or treating/get buckets of sweets for the neighbourhood children, and put a big carved pumpkin in the window etc.) :

And we put lights and decorations up for Christmas obviously. 🎄

DreamW3aver · 01/09/2024 14:04

Why do you need to ask when to put them out? Like a lot of posters above I didn't know it was a thing but if it is for you why don't you do it when you want to do it?

Are there some kind of autumn decorations judges who will mark you down for going to early? I went to a show a few weeks ago where the judges disqualified some entries in the produce classes for not sticking to the rules, is "pumpkins out pre equinox" a no no?

SuePreemly · 01/09/2024 14:04

Yeah I do a little bit. It's partly trying to be conscious of appreciating the changing seasons as they come and go for me.

It's very little things though: I have a felt garland I sewed of leaves/mushrooms/pumpkins, and some candles which I decorated myself with dried flowers. They go into the hurricane lamp with (real) acorns and conkers I have gathered. I have a dried flower arrangement which is autumnal which comes back out for a few months. The blankets come back out the storage box and the wipe clean tablecloth gets changed.

I'm not putting plastic pumpkins everywhere or going full on Halloween but it's a very mindful part of going into autumn for me. I love autumn but I do struggle with SAD a little and these things along with other conscious acts help me to celebrate each season, rather than dread it.

Lemonadeand · 01/09/2024 13:47

I like to put a couple of pumpkins and a marrow on the table around harvest festival time, so late September or early October.

That's one way to make any bloke visiting feel inadequate..

🤪

Imma decorate this autumn, maybe mid October time.. this will entail swapping summer duvet for winter one... Maybe get a Stunt Turnip and shove it up me arse.

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 01/09/2024 14:05

Oh and @justflewinfromthewindycity Sept 1st is a bit early IMO. It is Autumn though. Up to you. I'd leave it for 2 weeks personally. It's still the school summer holidays at the moment!

Chocolatelover13 · 01/09/2024 14:05

No, just no, no, no, no..

Comedycook · 01/09/2024 14:05

The twelfth of never.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 01/09/2024 14:05

September is still summer! It’s 26 deg here today - and that’s without any sun on the thermometer.

All I ever do is a pumpkin in the window on 31st October, to let trick or treaters know it’s OK to knock. I did once knit a Halloween wreath for the Gdcs’ house, but they certainly wouldn’t put it up before mid October.

Lifeomars · 01/09/2024 14:05

Never have, never will. I only began to realise it was a "thing" as have seen various bits of autumnal themed tat stuff in shops that have home wear for sale. I have also watched "influencers" on YouTube going through their "hauls" which currently include mini pumpkins, door wreaths made of faux russet leaves, tea towels, cushions and fairy lights so I guess it is a money spinner. If you enjoy it and have the time and energy to do it, not to mention the space to store the stuff when the Christmas season begins, then go for it.

afaloren · 01/09/2024 14:06

Today! I absolutely love decorating for the seasons (except summer) but autumn is my favourite and it is a ritual for me when September starts. I give everywhere a good scrub and bring on the pumpkins!

Okokokok29 · 01/09/2024 14:06

Vikina · 01/09/2024 13:13

I didn't know this was a thing. I only do decorations of any sort at Christmas.

This!
