Women are banned from talking in public

Washingupdone · 26/08/2024 13:13

Women through new laws issued by Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers, are now banned on speaking in public as a woman's voice is considered "intimate" and should not be heard. I feel so sad and helpless for their situation. At least I am educated and in this situation would try to limit birth control without my husband being aware of my actions, if I could.
Does anyone know how they can be helped?

I work with a qualified nurse from Iran whose employed as a HCA whilst she waits to complete certain exams to allow her to work as a staff nurse.
She was telling me about how bad it was over there for women. Her father had died recently and she wasn’t even able to visit him for fear of being arrested. One of our colleagues (muslim and not a nurse incidentally) told her that it was her own fault. She was telling me about the type of coverings they have to wear there as nurses. Same person told her ‘they are the rules of the country, you have to do it’. This is a perfectly nice polite individual that I’ve worked with many times.
We now have quite a few nurses who wear hjabs at work. My Iranian friend was utterly gobsmacked that someone would chose to dress like that.

@Simonsignoret - incredible, and very disturbing.
These misogynist regimes are getting very emboldened. It seems that women's rights are easily eroded.
There should be mass demonstrations!

This. Every time.

Scirocco · 26/08/2024 19:24

@Simonsignoret that colleague sounds horrible. What a cruel thing to say to your Iranian friend.

Simonsignoret · 26/08/2024 19:29

@Scirocco we were casually chatting in the staff room. They were sat there having a brew. Just joined in the conversation. Wasn’t nasty in any way, just calmly stated a fact. I guess as an Islamic theocracy it was the rule of the land. But a rule that clearly needs challenging.

Leoraah · 26/08/2024 19:42

Iranians are generally progressive and most of them hate the Islamic Republic. They don't generally want to wear a veil. And they want to dance. And sing. Etc. There just seems to be such a push from Islamists recently that is now also prevailing into the west. No sane person wants to be ruled by radical islam.

Washingupdone · 26/08/2024 20:10

Thank you for all your comments. Simply It is good to know there are other people thinking of them.

I worked with a female doctor from Iraq, she didn't wear hijab but always had a scarf around her neck, I noticed she always pulled it over her hair when a particular male muslim colleague, from a different country, was present.

She often talked about the pressure her family put on her to go home, give up her career, get married and have children. She really didn't want to, she enjoyed living and working in the UK. I have no idea what happened in the end but I think about her from time to time and hope she found a way to have the life she wanted.

Don't forget that the rushed US withdrawal from Afghanistan allowed the Taliban to take over overnight. Biden and Co knew what would happen but it was to score woke points in the west.

Agree with pp that it should make it very clear that Israel mustn't be allowed to be destroyed by Hamas and their allies. Do you want to live in a world dominated by Islamic values or by Western values? I know what I am for.

CitizenZ · 26/08/2024 22:14

This is a thread about Afghan women. There's plenty of threads about Israel/Palestine to get involved in if you wish.

It's obviously connected. The fact is people who are supporting radical Islamism in the form of Hamas need to understand what a misogynist and brutal regime they're marching for. How do we help Afghani women when we are vociferously encouraging Hamas? It has to be part of the discussion, surely?

Scirocco · 26/08/2024 22:30

Perhaps the women of Afghanistan deserve to have one thread here that is about them, rather than about angry men hating and killing each other in a different part of the world.

This is really disturbing. I honestly don't know what can be done. How can such horrific misogyny be allowed to be entrenched in law! Surely if someone isn't allowed to speak they should be able to leave and be granted asylum in a safer country? I really wish I could help them.

They could get asylum if they could get out. Since women aren't allowed to drive or go anywhere unaccompanied by a male relative, they can't get out of the country. Plus the penalty for trying to do so would probably be death. It's monstrous.

It is about them. What are we meant to say? Don't worry, it's nothing to do with anyone or anything else happening in the world? Nothing to do with Islamism or the botched US withdrawal? Why is this happening to women in Afghanistan then?

Or are we supposed to just repeat how terrible it is over and over and not bother our little heads about why it's happening and how the Taliban can get away with it?

No one, that I know of. But in general, that's the mainstream push.

There's a sub forum on the current war between Israel and Gaza. It might be an idea to post about your concern for the women of Gaza there.

There are many, many Afghan men in this country. Are they going to protest & lobby on behalf of the women in their country. Many of these men say they are fleeing the taliban regieme, now they are in the West how are they going to raise awareness on behalf of their female counterparts? They can see us women with our revealing clothes that we choose to wear, our voices we choose to use, our jobs, our cars, our liberal views & opinions surely the Afghan men we have made very dangerous voyages to flee Taliban rule can shout on behalf of Afghan women & demand change.

"I really wish every last woman and female child could be flown out of Afghanistan and just leave the men to f**ck and fight each other until they all die out"

Disgusting. You'd leave the male children for them to take this out on.

Sexual abuse of boys is already rampant in Afghanistan. I saw a documentary about it and it was incredibly grim.
What they do is pay the parents to let their boys come to "work" for them. They are dressed up as women and made to dance for groups of men, then they are gang raped.
Sorry if that triggers anybody, but it's important that we know the facts.

This is shocking but is homosexuality not a criminal offence in Afghanistan? How are these men allowed get away with it?

Being against Israeli aggression is mainstream, but that does not equate to support of Hamas.
Anybody who supports Hamas can fuck right off.

I'm posting on this thread. Stop acting like it's irrelevant to the discussion here. Other posters have also commented on Islamism because it's obviously at the core of the issue.

It's probably not considered homosexuality because the victims are not grown men. Pedophilia is apparently a-okay over there. 🤮
