Small but weirdly pleasing things.

We all love popping the lid on a jar of coffee, hot chocolate or similar thing. And everybody enjoyed the feeling of running a nail down the silvery finger crevice of a Kit Kat. What other things are there that bring small strange joy?

I love driving down a motorway or duel carriageway and having my side of the road go off on it's own away from the other half. "See you later Southbound losers!". It feels slightly adventurous.

When the swifts are screaming across the sky in summer.

When all the family are home, late at night, settled in bed and I am downstairs, the last one up.

a comfortable bra

Cracking the ice on a puddle.
Using your heel to dig a channel through a dam of autumn leaves, and watching a huge puddle drain off the road.
The home straight on a jigsaw (somehow it's not the final piece, it's the last handful that's best).
Eating sun-warm berries straight from the bush.

I love sitting in our little conservatory, surround by trees on 3 sides, when its pouring with rain and the dog is snuggled up against me. It's so cosy. It's also an amazing place to watch stars on a clear night as we have very dark skies.

Latenightreader · 25/08/2024 06:19

Seeing motorway signs that read 'The North' etc make the journey feel like an epic quest rather than a slog.

Car transporters give me a small thrill.

Standing on a railway bridge when a fast train goes underneath.

Elcad · 25/08/2024 06:49

Love how this thread made me aware of all these small pleasures.
I love hearing birds singing in the garden, my dogs' even breathing when they're enjoying a nap, the sound of the wind in the leaves, the noises on the beach in summer (waves, children having fun...)

GoingMadder · 25/08/2024 07:16

Soaking in the bath on a bank holiday Sunday knowing there is no work tomorrow.
Driving home after a day out while everyone else has a sleep in the car.
Mt child having the right coat and shoes for each occasion.

scalt · 25/08/2024 08:00

Putting slippers or Ugg boots on my bare feet, especially after a shower.

If I'm wearing closed toe sandals, seeing my feet peeping through the holes. (I loved to do this as a child!)

If stopped at a pedestrian crossing, seeing lots of people getting the benefit of it, instead of just one or two.

The golden light before dusk on a sunny day.

My DH putting a nice sleep mask over my eyes, before reading to me. (A bedtime pleasure which helps me to wind down)

JamSlags · 25/08/2024 08:07

That early evening time when people have put their lights on but not shut the curtains so you can see into their lives rooms.

grinandslothit · 25/08/2024 08:09

The aroma of tea as I pour hot water over it

PetrichorSoul · 25/08/2024 08:19

The pop of a new tin of Illy coffee.

My cats when they come in from the sun and smell like clean laundry.

When the shampoo finishes the same time as the conditioner (even though it’s the third shampoo to one conditioner bottle) Grin

LunaTheCat · 25/08/2024 08:24

My first cup of tea in the morning
Mumsnet!
Crawling into newly washed and line dried sheets
The first time you wear a brand new pair knickers!
Watching candle flame and sitting by a roaring fire in winter.
My cat crawling into bed with me and purring
The first sip of a cold dry Sauvignon Blanc.
Waking up on a no work day…bonus points if warm breeze coming through open window.

Supernaturaldemons · 25/08/2024 08:43

The weight and flickableness of my favourite walking stick-excellent sensory feedback.

Bad weather, the louder the better.

Driving a big, old, heavy vehicle- also excellent sensory feedback.

Northernnugget · 25/08/2024 08:52

The orange glow of an autumn sunrise inside the house
An empty laundry basket / dishwasher
Spontaneous plans ,(with no pre-booking)
Finding a bargain/ good yellow sticker
The anticipation of a new episode or chapter

Riverswims · 25/08/2024 09:00

my Dad has just woken me up to say there's fresh porridge made, it's our last full day with them for a while so that's lovely 🫂

sashh · 25/08/2024 09:02

My heated throw.

xsquared · 25/08/2024 09:06

The pop of the lid as the pressure releases when you gently prise a jar open with the end of a spoon or tip of a knife.

Finding a charity shop bargain- recently example, I bought 4 Denby side and dinner plates which matched our set, for £4.99.

Having a fresh coffee made when you arrive at a self catering holiday cottage.

When I've been on a run and get a 👑 for a segment or 🏅 for a distance on Strava.

When the laundry is out on a sunny breezy day so that when you collect them, they're completely dry.

LunaNorth · 25/08/2024 10:20

Taking your bra off at the end of the day.
Finishing a run.
When your dog snuggles in and sighs with happiness.

"Can't believe nobody has said writing with a biro on a banana yet."

Maybe, but there is nothing better in life than writing on the sole of your slipper with a biro, on a Saturday night, instead of going to the pub.

(I might have nicked that one.)

Half Man Half Biscuit 😀

Littletinytarzanswingingfromanosehair · 25/08/2024 11:24

Biting into a crisp sandwich.
We are camping in Keswick at the moment, weathers not great but so cosy in the van.
Pulling eyelash glue from the eyelash line
Using my ear camera and looking for wax

AlwaysKindaKnewYoudBeTheDeathOfMe · 25/08/2024 11:27

Oh writing on a banana is awesome! I used to leave wee notes on my colleague's banana when we shared an office 😂

FussyPud · 25/08/2024 11:48

Sitting on the old patio chair near my back door at dusk with a mug of coffee, listening to the birds fussing about as they settle for the night.

Watching bedding snapping on the washing line on a scorching hot day.

Getting on a train. Doesn’t matter where to - a five minute hop or a many-houred odyssey, it is just a happy feeling.

I go fishing once a week. Local very small river. About once a month I get treated to seeing a kingfisher. They are fab-like little fighter pilots bombing up and down the river barely inches above the surface. When I stop being thrilled by that flash of electric blue I know it will be time for a one way trip to Switzerland. I also, even rarer, get to see barn owls at the same place quartering the fields. I also like strange cats (by which I mean cats you dont know, not cats that are nutters) which come to you for a bit of fuss-i guess that's about 2 in ten, if your lucky.

Oh I really envy you the kingfisher sightings. I walk by the river all the time but never see them. I always think we’re being quiet, but they must sense the dogs.

you need to sit completely still and not make a noise-which is about the be all and end all of fishing. They are incredibly shy creatures.
