Small but weirdly pleasing things.

We all love popping the lid on a jar of coffee, hot chocolate or similar thing. And everybody enjoyed the feeling of running a nail down the silvery finger crevice of a Kit Kat. What other things are there that bring small strange joy?

I love driving down a motorway or duel carriageway and having my side of the road go off on it's own away from the other half. "See you later Southbound losers!". It feels slightly adventurous.

Cutting my toenails! ✂

Pulling up a weed complete with the root. 🌿

As a pp said, seeing cute hedgehogs tootling around the garden at night! 🦔

Seeing my lovely flowers bloom and blossom in Summer, when I planted them as seeds in the early Springtime. 🌺 🌻🪻

Snuggling on the couch with my cat pressed up against me. 🐈

Again, as a pp said, pouring boiling water over a big chunk of frozen peas in a saucepan, and watching them split. 🫛

The tan line on my feet from my sandals, highlighting what a lovely suntan I have! ☀️

Mysterian · 24/08/2024 23:35

Can't believe nobody has said writing with a biro on a banana yet.

And having a good scratch of an itch on the lower leg, which I remember hearing is scientifically the most satisfying place to scratch.

The simple ritual of brewing coffee in a stove pot. A lovely rich aroma fills the kitchen while I empty the dishwasher adds a sense of productivity too

It's gotta be fresh bedsheets after your last nightshift, 😊

There is simply nothing on earth that compares to the feeling of this!

I can imagine it would on a relaxing morning, but on a work day it is murderously slow

Likewhatever · 24/08/2024 23:42

Washing on the line, billowing away on a sunny windy day.
The utter joy of a new flower bud.
Tiny new leaves that suggest that my cuttings may have taken, spidery white roots that confirm they have.

UnctuousUnicorns · 24/08/2024 23:45

"Can't believe nobody has said writing with a biro on a banana yet."

Maybe, but there is nothing better in life than writing on the sole of your slipper with a biro, on a Saturday night, instead of going to the pub.

(I might have nicked that one.)

Sherrystrull · 24/08/2024 23:54

When your children put their arms round your neck for a cuddle.
Listening to the rain when you're in bed and the rest of your family are safe in bed.
A warm and windy day - perfect for line drying clothes
Being just about to get into bed and seeing your significant other on the other side of the bed asleep then looking at your space and knowing it's where you belong.

This made me quite sad that you can no longer do this with KitKats 😢 Great thread OP!

I love standing outside my dad's back door in the countryside and staring at a clear sky full of stars, and it's soooo quiet. Can just about hear the lap of the waves on the nearby beach.

Ruthietuthie · 25/08/2024 00:19

First scoop of Nutella.

mouseyowl · 25/08/2024 00:35

Perfectly cooked steamed or boiled vegetables

It's not commonly achieved in my house despite my best intentions and knowing how to cook, so when I get it just right I'm disproportionately happy

OverthinkingRogue · 25/08/2024 00:43

The smell of freshly cut grass.

The warm sun on my skin.

The smell of fresh bread/coffee.

Putting on a brand new pair of snug boxers.

Climbing into bed, with fresh sheets.

Waking up without my back hurting!!

mouseyowl · 25/08/2024 00:43

When toddler hurls themselves for a cuddle and they don't manage to smash their skull into my face/teeth/collarbone or tits.

So a full on bodyslam of love but without the expected pain/injury on either of us (somehow it's mostly me that usually gets hurt)

The best feeling ever.

GameofPhones · 25/08/2024 00:52

Cancelled appointments. I thought I had workmen due (misread my diary). When I realised the mistake, I felt so relaxed and comfortable. Guess I must have been very tense expecting them, but was not aware of it.

AdaColeman · 25/08/2024 00:58

The almost shimmering pink as you peel open a fresh lychee.

Cutting an avocado in half and getting the skin off and the stone out neatly, extra points if it's ripe, but not over-ripe. 🥑 🥑 🥑 🥑 🥑

Yes to the bluebell wood, and I'll add a bank of snowdrops or cowslips.

Aria999 · 25/08/2024 01:55

The smell of the first page of a paper book you have been looking forward to reading, the first time you open it. (Haven't actually had this experience since Harry Potter came out as I now tend to read everything on my phone if at all).

Umpteentimesnow · 25/08/2024 01:58

When you finally manage to pluck that all evasive chin hair

  1. Picking the fluff out of my babies fingers and toes 2)when you take your mascara off and pull the line of goo out of your eye 🤣 3)even distributing dairylea dunker cheese on to each stick 4)scissors gliding on wrapping paper 5)when you write a perfect letter with a great pen 6)hoovering up crumbs 7)throwing the bottles in the bottle bank and hearing them smash 8)scratching a scratch card

Number 4 on your list is one of my ultimate joys, but it is very hit and miss - one of my best was with Primark cheapo by the cash desk roll!

ClickClickety · 25/08/2024 02:18

Masking tape. So satisfying when it comes off flawlessly.

When the thing you want to watch is at the top of Netflix front page so you don't have to scroll down.

Cattery · 24/08/2024 22:21

The cat getting onto the pillow next to me, purring. Joy

Yes!

ButtonNoses · 25/08/2024 02:28

ooooh so many.

a fully stocked fridge
getting up for the airport and being excited
seeing the first fresh snow fall
a brand new candle with a cracking wick
coming home to a snack you’ve been excited all day about
waking up past your alarm time on your day off.

coxesorangepippin · 25/08/2024 02:33

Butter melting in a pan

When your grocery bill is an exact number

When there is exactly enough food at dinner to just serve everyone - no annoying small portion of leftovers

lonelywater · 25/08/2024 03:19

I go fishing once a week. Local very small river. About once a month I get treated to seeing a kingfisher. They are fab-like little fighter pilots bombing up and down the river barely inches above the surface. When I stop being thrilled by that flash of electric blue I know it will be time for a one way trip to Switzerland. I also, even rarer, get to see barn owls at the same place quartering the fields. I also like strange cats (by which I mean cats you dont know, not cats that are nutters) which come to you for a bit of fuss-i guess that's about 2 in ten, if your lucky.

Getting all the peel off an orange in one piece.

Peeling the shell from an egg in minimal pieces, I’m happy when I can peel the whole thing with only two or three large pieces of shell.
