Do you look good for your age?

Weird question I know. I get so surprised by some people's ages. Like I can't believe they are older than I think they are in my head, or younger. I used to get IDd long after I was 18. Now I would say i definitely look my age and people would probably guess within a year or two. I try to look after my skin but there's only so much you can do!

Oh, and if you do, give me some tips!!!

Up until a couple of years ago, people used to be surprised at my age and put me around 10 years younger. I've rapidly caught up though now I'm nearly 50 and seem to have aged those 10 years in 1 year.

I still look good (ish) but I don't look younger anymore!

RogersOrganismicProcess · 11/08/2024 22:49

Until I turned 44 (and I think became perimenopausal) people were always shocked at my age. Then I caught up almost over night. I still get a shock when I look in the mirror!

concretevase · 11/08/2024 22:49

I used to get ID'd until I had a kid at 36 and all those sleepless nights caught up with me

AngryBird6122 · 11/08/2024 22:51

Right ok, I'll have to brace myself for my late 40's/early 50s then 😬

I’m 45 and get mistaken for younger a lot (it will probably hit me within the menopause). In my case I think it’s just lucky genetics as my gran and mother didn’t look their age either ti much older. I don’t do much to stop aging just moisturise and generally have good skin, I don’t smoke which I think is one thing that adds years onto your skin.

Alwaystimeforacupoftea · 11/08/2024 22:57

I agree with everyone, for some reason you jog along looking very young for that particular age, then all of a sudden lurch to older, either through stress, kids or just something happens like you get a double chin or everything starts sagging. I mean there's a lot of things you can do to tweak this process, but no-one 60 looks 40 and that's just a fact.

Foxybyname · 11/08/2024 22:58

Retinol is your friend!
It has made a huge difference to my skin. I get mistaken for quite a bit younger than I am - I'm 54. I've always looked after my skin but not with anything particularly expensive or 'fancy'. Retinol has been a game changer, been using it since early lockdown.

Intriguedbythis · 11/08/2024 22:59

I regularly get ID’d and I am early 30s
had really v chubby cheeks when younger so now they have thinned out a bit I think they are ‘normal size’ I also get told I have an ‘innocent expression’ ( people who know me are aware that’s a mere illusion!)
or maybe it’s just random I get id’d!!!

AbsolutelyFemale · 11/08/2024 23:00

I'm 54 and look better than I did 10 years ago. I've got more time to look after myself now the kids are older.

AhBiscuits · 11/08/2024 23:00

I'm 43 and look 43. I still think I look good though and I agree about retinol, it's made a difference to my skin.

EmeraldDreams73 · 11/08/2024 23:02

I'm 51 and nobody ever thinks I look my age. Dds teenage mates are always surprised when informed how ancient I am and say they'd have guessed 5-8 years younger. I'm not remotely glamorous so not disguising anything with trendy clothes, and I'm fat which might have plumped out a few wrinkles! I don't really have wrinkles yet (I do use good anti-ageing skincare incl eye cream and have done since turning 40, it's definitely made a difference). My diet is crap tbh but I don't really drink alcohol. My mum and gran both look/ed way younger than their actual age all the way through so tbh it's probably just lucky genes in terms of the lack of wrinkles. So far...

AngryBird6122 · 11/08/2024 23:02

What does retinol do? Does it smooth out wrinkles or just give you a glow that makes you look younger?

@AbsolutelyFemale love that!

Do I look good? Yes

Do I look younger than 55? No

You seem to be conflating looking good and looking younger. They don't always go hand in hand.

AngryBird6122 · 11/08/2024 23:03

@EmeraldDreams73 I'll bet good genes have a lot to do with it. My mum died in her 30s so I don't have anything to look at and compare myself to! Her mum was very glam into her 90s though

Being heavier definitely makes you look younger.

I might have rephrased that better. I meant do you look your age. of course you can look good at any age! I think I look good, but also look my age, if that makes sense

Sorry to hear of your loss. I'm sure genes are the biggest factor.

Not always I don't think.

As we age, our bodies drop along with our faces and I think a lot of heavier people tend to get jowls, which can be aging.

happyhemsby · 11/08/2024 23:06

I think I look my age (40) but I did get ID'd a couple of weeks ago in a garage 😳 I was very happy to hand over my id 😅

I've only ever head that on MN and I disagree, as lots of slim people have a fuller face anyway.

My ass is horrendous (really need to do something about my weight for my health) so if I manage to lose weight I'll be interested to see if I suddenly get wrinkly!
