Do you look good for your age?

Weird question I know. I get so surprised by some people's ages. Like I can't believe they are older than I think they are in my head, or younger. I used to get IDd long after I was 18. Now I would say i definitely look my age and people would probably guess within a year or two. I try to look after my skin but there's only so much you can do!

There genuinely are people that look completely amazing. Alesha Dixon is extremely close to my age and she looks embryonic by comparison. I’m not jealous at all 😡

Funny you said this. I read an article about her a few months ago and I couldn’t believe that she is forty three or so. She could pass for someone in their late twenties

Sheknowsaboutme · 12/08/2024 09:13

Im 50 in 4 weeks and I don’t look it. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t look 40 neither but my skin is great, my hair is ok ( I have lots of it) and im slim apart from the menopause belly. I don’t do botox not lip fillers

I don’t want to look younger, just great for my age. I think there lies the problem with many

ThreeSides · 12/08/2024 09:17

So many babyfaces. 👶

There was a woman claiming she looked like a teen on the last thread I seen. She was 3; I think. She posted a photo and surprisingly didn't look like a teen at all. Some people look maybe 5-8 years younger than they are. I've never seen anyone look any younger than that, both real life and celebs.

It's delusion.

mondaytosunday · 12/08/2024 09:21

I think it's genes. Other than avoiding the sun and not smoking lotions and potions don't really have too much effect.
I just went to a friend's 60th so met a number of people around that age. Some looked very much middle age - a bit of extra weight, receding hair, a bit frumpy, but a few looked considerably younger.
So genes and managing to keep slim and making an effort - those are my three markers for looking younger.

We were in the audience for something that she was on not too long ago. She's gorgeous but definitely doesn't look in her 20s like someone said. She looked late 30s, so about 5 years younger than she was at the time.

Yeah this is a good point. Celebs have access to the best makeup artists and lighting for photo shoots, not to mention filtering/photo shop.

Since getting HD tv I've actually been shocked by how many TV people actually look in real life- you can see every flaw/line whereas you couldnt before- they must be so pissed off 😂

Not to take anything away from Alesha btw, I think she is breathtakingly beautiful and I'd love to look like her.

Holidayhell22 · 12/08/2024 09:29

When I was young, teenager-early 20s people thought I was older. I was tall and slim with a thin face.
After having children I think I looked my age. I was never a glamorous mum.
In my 40s I started working out, got very toned and fit. I took an interest in clothes and could literally wear whatever I wanted. I had a flat stomach and wore bikinis on holiday for example.
People told me I looked a lot younger. People often mistook me and my daughter for sisters!
Now I’m older and people say I look younger but not as much as I did in my 40s. The menopause has aged me. I do think genes play a large part in how you look. My mum always looked younger than she was.
I do still work out and have always used face creams and removed my make up on a night.
Frankly I don’t care what others think about how I look. I’m reasonably healthy and thankful for that.
I buy clothes that I like, I don’t care if they are ‘aging’ or ‘not on trend.’
I won’t start wearing clothes because they are what younger people wear.

Allthislovelygreen · 12/08/2024 09:31

I used to be told I looked ten years younger, then I had a period of severe stress during COVID lockdowns (lost loads of money because I was recently self-employed) and I aged massively. Now people assume I'm older.

I think genes are important but avoiding stress or worry I believe is the best way to look youthful.

DappledThings · 12/08/2024 09:31

I have no idea. I am 45. I think I probably look that. Some might say 5 years either way. I don't know how to assess what other people might think, nor do I care.

Garlicfest · 12/08/2024 09:32

Alesha Dixon's a beautiful woman with the kind of high-relief bone structure that holds skin in place longer than ordinary mortals'.

She looks her age.

Tbh, I would just like the confidence to feel that I look good.

People often tell me I look good for my age (51) and dd friends are surprised when they know my age but I don't feel that I look good. I am perimenopausal, have terrible daily IBS and I look after my mum who has Azheimer's and breast cancer so am stressed to the max, I feel that is ageing me rapidly. Hard to feel young and look good when I like crap most days.

wizzbitt · 12/08/2024 09:34

I got id'd about 5 years ago when I was 43 😂 - something I will continue to dine out on not sorry DP! Like previous PPs I have looked after my skin since my teens. And as I got older I really invested in the good stuff. Now at 48 my skin is definitely less plump and dewey and I have changed the products I use which has helped. I have been lucky because genes have played a big part - my mum has always had beautiful skin.

nats2010 · 12/08/2024 09:40

I'm coming 42 this December. Normally never wear make up and usually quite fresh faced. Three pregnancies in 3 years has given me more grey hairs than I can count and I look like shit. Hopefully it will get better when the youngest gets a bit bigger.
There are so many factors that seem to affect this aspect of appearance.

RaraRachael · 12/08/2024 09:44

I'm in my early 60s and am lucky to have no lines or wrinkles on my face. My sister is older and similar. She thinks we inherited some sort of youthful gene from our mother. My son is 30 and looks about 20 so there's maybe something in it.

I often see women younger than me who look a lot older. I don't wear much make up mainly because I can't be bothered with all the faff.

kkloo · 12/08/2024 09:44

@cookiebee

The reason I posted what I did, is because these threads always seem to attract the ‘nobody can guess my true age’ posters who insist everyone thinks they look 10 years younger, and I just think you definitely won’t, people are on the whole are polite, they will be knocking off years to be kind, everyone looks their age or older.

They attract the 'no one ever looks that much younger than their age' posters who believe that other people are going around asking other people what age they think they look, or that they are mistaking the 'you haven't aged a day' compliments for fact.

In my case I certainly never ask people what age I look, instead I experience a lot of confusion from other people, such as at my kids school or when I went for a smear test and many other things like that.

ArabellaFishwife · 12/08/2024 09:52

I still have great thick, shiny hair in my late 50s, and my skin is still plump and smooth. This is because I'm a bit of a lardarse, which subtracts considerably from any misleading youthfulness. As does my dress sense, I expect. I've never gone in for fashion, beyond the limitations of what's actually available in the shops. Oh, and my feet are a wreck, meaning dowdy shoes.
No, I don't look good for my age.

Yes there are always signs. With black people yes their skin doesn't wrinkle until they are very old but there are other signs.. their eyes, how they move, voice etc.
Same with white people.. as intuitive humans we can just sense it.. someone might be petite and baby faced in their 40s but other things give it away. How they carry themselves, face texture and features
We have to get away from this obsession to look younger. What is so wrong with looking the age we are?

Holidayhell22 · 12/08/2024 10:11

There have been posts on here where women are adamant that their oh looks 20 years or more younger than their actual age. No they don’t. I pointed out that their 45 year old oh would not in any universe be mistaken for looking the exact same age as my 25 year old ds. Absolutely no way.
If someone asks me how old they look, I always, always knock several years off what I think.
Maybe I should stop doing this. Maybe I should add a few years on!
I see lots of younger people and they don’t seem to care how they look. In some respects good for them. In others I think if you are overweight now, lord help you as you age, you are going to struggle with health issues. Actually the majority of men do not look good. Only young, fit ones who work out and take some pride in their appearance. Once they get to a certain age most men just seam to give up completely.

PinkSunsetSky · 12/08/2024 10:22

I don’t think I look good for my age , but I think I could look better if I had more money and time to spend on myself.
I think a good colour at the hairdressers would really brighten me up but I can’t afford hundreds of pounds for a good balayage.

I still get ID’d and i’m 35 😂😂 i think its because i’m asian. I look younger than teenager these days with lots of makeup etc.

This is my best friend she’s south East Asian, she is almost 60 but looks 40. Her mum is almost 90 but looks about 70 and still extremely active. Both her grandmothers made it past the 100 mark so I’m expecting her to throw me a good funeral one day as she will probably be still rocking it 😂

Alwaystimeforacupoftea · 12/08/2024 10:36

I know so many women between the ages of 40 and 60, like all my colleagues, all my friends, and friends of friends. Lots of us look great, there's no doubt. A few are still stunning, most are muddling along in the middle. Not one person looks genuinely 20 years younger. It's just delusion to think you do. Some of the bigger ladies have less wrinkly skin, but they have the jowls/double chin (this is me). Some of the thinner ones have great bone structure but more wrinkles. Skin type and ethnicity plays in a little bit but then some have had grey hair earlier.

I've known most of them for 20 years. We are all ageing pretty well together. But, menopause is ageing, even with HRT (and I've never noticed the HRT gang looking noticeably younger, just being less anxious and feeling better) and even with the odd bit of Botox and surgery.

We look like middle-aged ladies (except the younger ones who look 40 odd as they are)!

Our hands show that, our jawlines show that, and our bodies show that. Even those who go to the gym three times a week!

I love my friends of this age, they are so interesting, spending time together is massively life-enhancing, I love the fact we are growing older and can laugh about these things, but we do look roughly the age we are, and that's fine.

curious79 · 12/08/2024 10:42

People comment on how good my skin is and regularly put me at ten + years younger - I’m 50.
i think 3 things:

  • I am a little overweight - it’s your face or your bum at 50. All friends who have the figure I aspire to don’t have the face (wrinklier)
  • genetics - my mum had effortlessly beautiful skin
  • i have always worn foundation as I found I got fewer spots when younger but I’ve inadvertently been using sunblock

I know lots of people think people are delusional (and maybe some are) about looking younger, and that people are just being flattering or kind when they guess they are younger, by deliberately subtracting a few years.
But in my late 20s I was sometimes mistaken for a teen, by people with clipboards in the street asking "teens" questions. I doubt they can be bothered to waste time stopping people they know are 25+ . And the way people speak to you. Often people use a different tone or address kids or teens in a more patronising different way to the way they would speak with soneone in eg their mid 20s or 30s. I've never looked, or claimed to look 20 years younger though!

Kipperthedawg · 12/08/2024 10:49

People are often surprised I'm 40 but that's only because I wear hoodies and carry myself like a grumpy teenager. Nothing to do with skin or hair.

Alwaystimeforacupoftea · 12/08/2024 10:55

I do get it- I also looked very young and baby-faced til my early thirties.

But if I (mid-fifties) sat next to a young looking woman in her mid-forties in the pub, even though I look 'good for my age' then it's pretty obvious who is the younger one. You could age-rank people fairly accurately in most workplaces.

I do have one colleague who looks a few years older than her age, but that might have been my preconceptions about white hair/clothing.

I've also seen two women who have had extensive fillers recently 'in the wild' and whilst they might look younger in selfies, their faces were mesmerisingly different/odd when talking, so much I had to make myself not look at them. Both looked like very attractive women of their age, but the fact they had to fill themselves with filler, do Botox and probably have surgery to have that taut and slightly odd look about them just said 'I'm my age'!
