Do you look good for your age?

Weird question I know. I get so surprised by some people's ages. Like I can't believe they are older than I think they are in my head, or younger. I used to get IDd long after I was 18. Now I would say i definitely look my age and people would probably guess within a year or two. I try to look after my skin but there's only so much you can do!

I've only ever head that on MN and I disagree, as lots of slim people have a fuller face anyway.

Funny enough DH says I look better (in the face) when I am of a ....ahem... fuller figure. I do look a little gaunt if I am at my body's healthy happy weight, but not wrinkly. I think sometimes we get used to ourselves in a certain way so it might be that rather than me looking worse

Retinol is your friend!
It has made a huge difference to my skin. I get mistaken for quite a bit younger than I am - I'm 54. I've always looked after my skin but not with anything particularly expensive or 'fancy'. Retinol has been a game changer, been using it since early lockdown.

Yes! You do need to start early. I also take it that my parents are 80 plus and look the same as my friends parents who are 15 plus years younger. Someone guessed my age though and they were only a few years out. That was a sad day for me.

My ass is horrendous (really need to do something about my weight for my health) so if I manage to lose weight I'll be interested to see if I suddenly get wrinkly!

Trust me, my ass is horrendous too 😂

Do you think that's good genes or is there a certain lifestyle they have?

I would be fuming!!! 😅

I'm 50 and look 50. Feel lucky to have made it this far, lost a few good friends on the way. Feel proud to be my age and not sure why I should try and look young.

DramaAlpaca · 11/08/2024 23:12

I think I look OK for my age. It's all down to genetics, I take after my mother and grandmother. I'm 60 but have very few lines and only a sprinkling of grey. HRT probably helps too.

I'm early 40s and am mostly grey. Had a lot of stress in my teen years which I think is the cause. I do agree about the genetics thing. Really there is only so much you can do 😊

It only applies once a woman reaches "a certain age".

snowballsintheoven · 11/08/2024 23:15

I'm 34

People sometimes say I look a bit younger - but they mean 31/32 😅

I'm very slim and short, I have 2 DC (one age 10, the other is 3) and I suppose they probably mean I look young to have a son the same height as me Grin

Also small amounts of Botox in my 11s and crows feet has been useful

I am more than content to be 34, I'm not afraid to age and I hope I can continue to do so Grin

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 11/08/2024 23:16

I’m 51 and think I have aged massively in the last two years - thanks perimenopause. However last week I had lunch with my ex-neighbour who I have been friends with for four years and has now moved house. She asked me how old I was (we were talking about another neighbour’s age in relation to her much older husband) when I told her she said she had always thought I was early forties - she’s late fifties - so that was nice. She’s seen me in pjs and no makeup too!

Wrennyjenwren · 11/08/2024 23:16

I'm 35 and many people think I look older. Makes me sad.
I've got frown lines and look a bit tired and scruffy, that's probably why. I don't have wrinkles or anything.

Harvestmoon49 · 11/08/2024 23:18

People genuinely seem shocked that I'm 53 and dh has been insulted a few times when people presume we're the same age (he's considerably younger than me!)

I think it's mainly due to me being very slim and not necessarily dressing my age? I also dye my hair and always have a ponytail!
I do look after myself though, I rarely drink and have never smoked etc I also prioritise sleep - this is crucial for me!!

100% agree. My mum didn't make it past her 30s so I am also thankful for every day I get past her age (which I am!) Just don't want to look too haggard! it kind of seemed like one say I just....aged!

I got asked if I had Botox recently because someone thought I was younger (I haven't) I also use The ordinary retinol and moisturiser and suncream. Nothing fancy other than that.

AliceMcK · 11/08/2024 23:20

Most people are still generally surprised by my age, 49 and still get mid 30s from many. I’ve never smoked, very fair so tend to avoid the sun, never been big on make up, I started to gradually wear more over the last few years but still prefer the light natural look.

Ive never used expensive products, if I can’t buy it in a supermarket I don’t. Although, I have been using Avon serums recently, I remembered trying one I liked in my early 30s when a friend started selling Avon recently. I liked it but I didn’t like paying for it at the time so stopped. I’ve been using a couple of different ones now for a few months and liking how my skin feels. Since lockdown I have become a lot better with taking care of my skin, cleaning and treating it and definitely feel it helps. The same with my hair and making sure my eyebrows are done, things I really didn’t care about until I hit my early 40s.

I also had children later in life, many of my family and school friends were grandparents long before I had my first so I think 1) the stress of being a parent didn’t kick in when I was younger 2) I don’t think I actually do stress about things that would have bothered me when I was younger and 3) people probably assume I’m younger because my children are young.

I don’t know. My dad enjoys red wine. Mops his bacon sandwich with the grease from the grill type of guy. He was attempting cartwheels with my dd last year. He’s just turned 83!!

It was months ago but obviously still stings 😂

NellGB · 11/08/2024 23:21

I look very young for my age. I often wonder if it’s because I have EDS and my skin is really soft and stretchy with no wrinkles. I also think not smoking or drinking or going out in the sun helps.

So funny! My glamourous gran had the most unhealthy lifestyle ever (similar to your dad) and looked amazing. It's not fair!

Love that he was attempting cartwheels

When you talk of looking good for your age, I think we can look presentable, neat, tidy but it’s different. Once we reach our 40s and beyond, we start looking old. Our bodies change structurally because of hormones and physical changes, we can’t hide those however much people lie and say they can’t BELIEVE we are that old, we look it, but that’s ok. Anyone saying they have no lines on their face, fair enough, but your face will still be sagging and changing structure, cartilage gets bigger, nose, ears etc. our skeletal structures change, our hands, our posture, we don’t look young but can look presentable. Best to enjoy life, lose any vanity and do as many things as you can, while you can, not everyone makes it as far as you have and not everyone has their health, don’t spend what little time any of you have worrying about appearance.

I don't look good for my age if I compare myself to TikTok or Insta or wherever. In real life, looking at actual real life people, I think I look great!

Willyoushutthefrontdoor · 11/08/2024 23:30

Menopause was definitely the factor for me. 3 kids. Slim. Facially too. Was mistaken for early 40s when in late 40s. Him indoors still says I look younger but he's biased and hes 57 and im 51 lol. Age 49 menopause hit me like a bloody sledgehammer! Weight gain. Sleepless nights. Stress. They Have all acted upon my face and body with a vengeance. But I'm alive and kicking. That's good enough for me. Trying to embrace my new self without being dramatic about food and gyms. Although we get married in 11 weeks and the dress I was measured for in march did not fit me last week on the back area. Boobs are my gain with weight... So I do have to lose a couple of inches! Booooooo

Lawnorder · 11/08/2024 23:31

I’m 52 and often aged around 45 by people. I think it’s because I’m a dickhead who laughs slot
