Do you look good for your age?

Weird question I know. I get so surprised by some people's ages. Like I can't believe they are older than I think they are in my head, or younger. I used to get IDd long after I was 18. Now I would say i definitely look my age and people would probably guess within a year or two. I try to look after my skin but there's only so much you can do!

I think people think that people in their 20s look older than they do, too. Probably because we see older actors playing 20 somethings.

A lot of my friends' kids in their 20s look very young, because they are! Looking back at photos of myself in my 20s, my figure is the same (but with fuller boobs and 2 inches off the waist), but my face is softer, whereas in my 20s, I was pleased at his much more defined my face was since my teens. But I can't put my finger on what exactly, has changed.

I’ve got good skin, I’m 36, I don’t have any lines yet (including fine lines) and I don’t have any hyperpigmentation (very common for my ethnicity). I’m careful to use spf everyday and I’m not one to sunbathe which helps.

I do have a lot if grey hair though, so I show my age there.

I think that quite a few people in their 20s do look older than that, say, in their 30s+ these days and I think it's those that use Botox and filler. It ages young faces because you see the Botox effect, you see the filler and your mind goes "smoothing out wrinkles". Trying to look younger. Must be in their 30s or maybe even 40s.
Then they tell you they're 25 or whatever.

So when you see someone in their 20s who hasn't done the forehead, the lips, etc, what I suppose used to be called "fresh faced", they seem much younger.

I will happily admit to looking older than my years at 46. Due to a hysterectomy I have lost my waist, and now have more of an unmarked level crossing instead. I've always had bad teeth, but they've moved even more recently and have a definite crone-ish vibe. I might get them fixed when the teens have flown the nest and are no longer bleeding me dry.

The skin in my face is not too bad for a very fair white woman, but the skin on my neck/chest/hands is a dead giveaway. Although I don't yet have greys my hair is no longer super-shiny, and I agree that while I try to nod to current fashion (updating jeans cuts/trainer types etc) I still wear these items quite differently to my 20something colleagues.

Deebee90 · 12/08/2024 12:22

I’m mid 30s and always get placed at 25/26. I think for me having acne prone and oily skin helped as I haven’t developed wrinkles yet. My mums in her late 70s and always get told she’s in her early 60s so I take after her.

LakelandDreams · 12/08/2024 12:26

I'm 49 and get put at late 30s usually. I use good skin care!

Hucklemuckle · 12/08/2024 12:39

It's peculiar that most people agree that some people look very old for their age but struggle to believe that some people look very young for their age.

Sun worshipper or those who worked outdoors. Smoked and drank all their lives. Stained tombstone teeth, frizzy hair, overweight or very underweight, unfit and lacking flexibility. Poor posture etc. I've seen people look a good 15-20 years older than they are. I've also seen those who look preternaturally young for their age.

Not 55 looking 30. But 55 looking 42 or 70 looking 60.

Why does hysterectomy mean you've lost your waist? I had my womb out (best thing ever btw) and still have a waist. Just wondering how it's linked

I believe it.
My husband is 60 and absolutely nobody believes him. They think he's about 50.

Nobody ever disbelieves me when I tell them I'm 50 though. 😁

Same. Where are all these people because I never see any.

I love Alesha, I think she's an absolute goddess but she does NOT look in her 20s FGS and why should she need to? she's perfect as she is and doesnt need to look like a 20 year old to look hot.

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 12/08/2024 13:36

@disturbia81 surgical menopause led to waist thickening. I'm sure it's not universal, but very common post-meno.

MouseofCommons · 12/08/2024 13:47

Somehow, yes. No one at work believes I was 50. No-one ever believes I'm my age. I'm annoyingly healthy and probably quite immature 😳.

Alwaystimeforacupoftea · 12/08/2024 13:59

Menopause (presumably hormonal loss) leads to fat distribution changing, going around the waist and increasing visceral fat around organs, which in turn increases cardio-vascular risks. Very annoying.

JabbaTheBeachHut · 11/08/2024 23:03

Do I look good? Yes

Do I look younger than 55? No

You seem to be conflating looking good and looking younger. They don't always go hand in hand.

Agree. There’s no harm in being 55 unless you’re trying to look 25

But are they just being polite? I work with people in their 50s, but I have to feign shock when it's a birthday. That's the law. Just like people pretend to be surprised that I'm mid 40s.

No, they aren't. Everyone says it. Before they knew a couple of them said I must of had kids really young when I was talking about my eldest learning to drive.

I am one of those people who eats kale, doesn't drink alcohol, moisturises and exercises. No fun zone 😁.

Yep- this is my standard response when anyone says it's their birthday- NO way! you look way younger, I never would have guessed!

Its just being kind, who on earth in their right minds would say "you look 50, in fact, I thought you were older than that"?

Literally noone on earth would say that if they wanted to keep on having a civil and pleasant working relationship with anyone.

Its an unspoken rule and everyone knows it

@Deebee90 Yes, oily skin runs in my DH’s family and they hardly have any wrinkles. It’s a pain when you’re a teenager but pays off later. 😂

I've said this too- it just seems like a nice compliment 😂

AlexandraJJ · 12/08/2024 14:35

I’m 54 soon and often mistaken for 40 at the most. I had my child late in life and whilst she was young I looked older than I was. She never slept! Now she’s older I’ve more time to look after my skin and do the rituals I used to do. After a strict diet I am also back to the weight I was in my 20s and I’ve all but stopped drinking. Good genes I guess along with skincare and hair care that works for me.

Oblomov24 · 12/08/2024 14:42

I think I look my age. I look ok, not great. Not younger or older.

roundtable · 12/08/2024 15:13

I work with someone who is 60 but looks like she's in her 40s on first glance. She looks amazing.

However, as a previous poster said, once you start talking to her there are signs she's older than that. Someone who has years of experience of life in a way a younger person wouldn't.

I agree that people who actually look younger are quite a rare breed. I think it's usually people who you can't quite tell their age when they're younger and could pass for older (not because they've had a hard life, just in the way they carry themselves). They almost get frozen in time between 20 and 45/50.

I'm in my 40s and I think I look it although others say I don't. I definitely do. I do get taken aback by how old some of my peers look but that's not because I look really young, it's just that they've 'aged' more. Luck of the draw.

Aging is a privilege.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 12/08/2024 15:24

No special secrets, it's just good genetics. Some people look younger than they are. Some have better skin than others.

I always get mistaken for mid/late 30s, at 46 I'll take that. My parents don't look like they're almost 80 though. They both have good genes which they've passed down to us all.

No special treatments either, I use the basic, cleanse, tone, moisturise with bog standing nivea (I moved to Q10 last year when my skin became drier) and have done since I was 10. Plus lots of water and a relatively healthy diet.

Meadowfinch · 12/08/2024 15:32

I'm 61 and 5'8", and I'm still a size 10 so that helps.

I have good posture and am still quite supply due to running and martial arts. I have plenty of energy.

I go to a genius hair duo who cut and colour my naturally straight hair to look very thick and healthy.

My skin is starting to sag though, nothing I can do about that, short of surgery, which I'm not prepared to do.

Compared to most ladies my age I'd say I look healthy and well maintained. No rusty bodywork. 😀
