What's your area famous for?
My sister has brought me some Eccles cakes, absolutely delicious!

What is your local speciality?

I got given one of the stotties they made and it was good. I've always preferred Greggs ones though as I was brought up on them (although my Mam says they taste sweet these days)

They used to be less so and were heavier, too. I remember being 18 or 19 and asking when they were going to make the proper ones again and being told that they'd changed the recipe. My daughter loves them.

Panhaggerty. I have a sudden need to make this as I'm making cheese scones later and have all the ingredients.

I remember it being simpler and leftovers, such as sausage and bacon going in with onion and potatoes. I had some at Hinnies, in Whitley Bar, recently and thoroughly enjoyed it, but it didn't seem to resemble me mutha's!

I'm NE England and my cousin and her Dad did the Big River stottie making course and thoroughly enjoyed it. I got given one of the stotties they made and it was good. I've always preferred Greggs ones though as I was brought up on them (although my Mam says they taste sweet these days)

We are beekeepers and make our own Meade.

Saveloys, Pease Pudding, Black Bullets (sweets) Brown Ale and as Sinnerboy mentions; Panhaggerty. I have a sudden need to make this as I'm making cheese scones later and have all the ingredients.

DH mourns the fact that you can’t find whole meal /brown stotties anymore. He distinctly remembers getting them from Greggs as a teenager. I have a vague memory of buying egg mayo whole meal stotties for lunch but I’m not sure it’s just that he’s talked about it so much!

I remember getting them from a couple of corner shops, they were really full of bran, with a sprinkling on top. I don't remember Greggs doing them...

The last place I knew of that did wholemeal stotties was Clarks bakery in Westerhope. They used to make it with brown ale. I'm off to my Mum's in a minute. I'm going to ask her if she has a recipe as I remember my Great Aunt making them.

I remember Greggs selling them, but I used to mostly get a tuna and cucumber white quarter stottie every day (45p in 1986)

I've just been into Whitley Bay as I fancied a treat after first posting on this thread. Thirteen quid for two Scones and a piece of cake to take away! Wey, hinny. A cuddu med aboot twenty stotties for that.

SinnerBoy · 17/08/2024 14:04

Thorteen bliddy Pund? That's daylight robbery!

WeMeetInFairIthilien · 17/08/2024 14:43

Where I grew up - banoffee pie, plum heavies and Sussex pond pudding

Currently- Bath buns and Bath Olivers.

Interestingly, there are two chippies in Bath that both sell potato scallops/fritters.
