What's your area famous for?
My sister has brought me some Eccles cakes, absolutely delicious!

What is your local speciality?

English sparkling wine. We have the same 'terroir' as the champagne region. With climate change now giving us the climate of champagne 30 years ago we now have world class wine.

Someone mentioned macaroni pie earlier! My Scottish friend gave me one to try this week, I didn't even know it was a thing before 😆.

Where I'm from we have parkin around bonfire night, as well as the other Lancashire things mentioned already.

Thevelvelletes · 11/08/2024 19:28

Babby's ed (Baby's Head) (meat pie usually in a chip shop). You might be asked if you want "pea wet" or "babby's ed wettin" - it's the thin juice off the peas over the top of the pie.

Pies in general lol.

Barmcakes, chip barm, bacon barm etc. Pie barm lol.

Hotpot with pickled red cabbage.

Parched peas.

Bury Black pudding.

Eccles cakes.

Uncle Joes Mint Balls.

Vimto. (and Hot Vimto)

Manchester Tart.

Lobscouse.

Butter Pie.

Sure I saw uncle Joe's mint balls painted on a building, when I was wandering round Wigan after a nsoul niter.

The mint ball factory is near the stations. In Wigan, that is.

You can smell the end product in the air some days.

Went to see Poet Laureate Simon Armitage last night and he referred to a Sheffield salad. It's a plate of chips.

What is a Scuffler? That must be the best name ever!

Haggis, Stovies, Edinburgh Rock (not like Blackpool Rock…it’s sort of soft and crumbly). Luca’s Ice Cream.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 11/08/2024 22:46

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/08/2024 10:23

Also in Derbyshire and was going to say those things.

We’ve been staying near Matlock for the last two weeks. (We’ve been coming for 16 years now) and get a Bakewell Pud every year! Bloody delicious.😋

Luca's ice cream is the best, but I'm sure those on the west coast would argue in favour of Nardini's!

mitogoshi · 11/08/2024 23:22

Cheddar is 10 miles away

Sainsbury's is 4 miles away. We are all closer to Cheddar than we think.

DrCoconut · 12/08/2024 00:41

@supadupapupascupa it seems you are from the best county too 😬. Assuming we both mean the same thing by pizza platter it is a thing in N. Lincs too.

DrCoconut · 12/08/2024 00:50

@PerkyMintDeer the liquidy peas in NW chip shops were a revelation when I moved out that was as I was used to thick mushy peas like you get in tins. Also different names for different forms of chips in bread. I had no idea what a chip barm was at first or how it differed from a chip butty.

Loopzy · 12/08/2024 00:57

Dixon's Milk Ice

sashh · 12/08/2024 04:46

@Lifeinlists the Black Country Museum apparently fries their fish and chips in dripping. I'm not sure if you can get bits though.

@DrFoxtrot Parkin? Surely that's Yorkshire, you cannot have a bonfire night without it.

Do you feel better for posting that?

Mumsnet at it's best!

I have dyslexia - makes me feel like I can't comment

Edited

Just say that's what I meant. No need to stop posting.

LovelyLittleBitofSquirrel · 11/08/2024 16:23

Oooh whats the difference?
Do you eat them differently, or are they made in a different way?

scufflers are bigger, tend to be baked longer so have a different texture inside and usually have flour on the top unlike a normal breadcake! and sorry i swore id answered yesterday but i have a brain like a colundar!

DrFoxtrot · 12/08/2024 09:20

@sashh it's both and slightly different recipes originated in each area. All delicious 😍
