What's your area famous for?
My sister has brought me some Eccles cakes, absolutely delicious!

What is your local speciality?

Can't think of any from where I'm originally from, but from my adopted home, macaroni pie and haggis pakora are my favourites!

dizzydizzydizzy · 11/08/2024 13:45

Jellied eels. can't bring myself to try them.

Where I grew up: I'd have to say curry .

Pie and mash. Liquor
Jellies eels 🤮

stevienicksismyfairygodmother · 11/08/2024 14:22

Gypsy tart - I love it but most people I know don't. Was served with a lemon sauce at primary school.
Pie and Mash with liquor and loads of un brewed condiment. Pie has to be eaten upside down and with a spoon and fork, no knife.
Outer London

Tdp123 · 11/08/2024 14:26

Clangers.

Scallops
Not sea food but large slices potatoes dipped in batter and fried.
Get them.from chip shops in Birmingham.
Divine.

They're called potato fritters here

Gummybear23 · 11/08/2024 15:27

LovelyLittleBitofSquirrel · 11/08/2024 10:53

I bloody love these but know them as potato fritters.
Used to buy them for lunch for 10p from the chippy.
Not had them in years, would love one right now!

Me too!
With salt and vinegar. To die for.

delfttulipvase · 11/08/2024 15:27

The best cheese with Christmas cake is creamy Lancashire.

Also good in a thin slice popped under the crust of a hot mince pie.

Or with aforementioned Eccles cake. Chorley cakes are best with thick butter (so thick you can see your teeth mark when you take a bite).

Chippy sauce.
All the other specialities are Scottish generally:
Tattie scones
Square sausage
Haggis
Scotch pies
Irn bru

Love chippy sauce. The rest of the country don't know ehst they are missing.

Adding to this list

Tablet
Mince @ tatties
Steak pie with a puff pastry lid
Cranachan

aye lass 😂

LovelyLittleBitofSquirrel · 11/08/2024 15:52

@Tdp123 what are clangers?!

@Gummybear23 I'll be honest with you I have been googling recipes for this but it literally is a thick slice of potato in batter 😂
The ones we used to get were amazing - freshly fried out of the oil and as you say, S+V on it - I could eat 5 right now!
You'll have to tell me the best chippies to get them from as they sure don't do them down here in the South East 😒
* gets ready to start looking on Rightmove for properties close to Gummybear's local chip shop *

The South East too you say?
Hmmm... Can you imagine if we were to walk into each of our own local chippy to request that specifically, only for them to say
"That's odd, the lady just there nods over in your direction has just asked for that..."

Yorkshire but exiled in the West Midlands.

Agree that Fruit cake must be served with cheese but it has to be Wensleydale. It's got the right amount of tang that goes with the sweetness of the cake.

I offered Xmas cake and Wensleydale to DH's southern relations. They eyed it suspiciously and tried a bit out of politeness. Then declared they wouldn't have it again.
Heathens!!
DH is a convert btw.

Yes to Curd Tart, especially Bettys.I used to make my own too. Delicious.

Has anyone mentioned Yorkshire fish and chips? They're much nicer than any round here as a) haddock is standard and b) they're cooked in beef dripping traditionally. The fact that the local ones aren't so good benefits my waistline though.
We had Scallops in Yorkshire like yours
@LovelyLittleBitofSquirrel . And scraps.
