What's your area famous for?
My sister has brought me some Eccles cakes, absolutely delicious!

What is your local speciality?

Isn't Timothy Taylor Yorkshire?

Yes. It's in Keighley.

Steak and kidney pie.
We are known as "the pie village".

Ha ha. I know where it is.

Thevelvelletes · 13/08/2024 18:03

Getting a decent pie isn't easy, not a fan of the bit of puff plonked on top of steak n gravy.

storminabuttercup · 13/08/2024 18:19

Scufflers are usually a triangle kind of shape, bit lighter than breadcakes and slightly but only slightly crusty, they tend to go dry very quickly but are lovely.

Patties
chip spice

Tintackedsea · 13/08/2024 23:49

Black pudding is what we're particularly famous for and other folk will eat. Scallops, langoustines, mussels, oysters, salmon from here are all world famous for their deliciousness.

Salted gannet is what we're infamous for and no bugger with any sense would eat! Stuffed fish heads and sheep's head soup also come in this category.

I would also say water biscuits and oatcakes are different here.

ForeveraBluebird · 14/08/2024 01:37

@RedHillSunsets , I’ll add anther Welsh one, a pint of dark.

LifeExperience · 14/08/2024 01:58

Florida, so gator tail, Cubano sandwiches, key lime pie. Caribbean food like conch fritters and chowder. Lots of fresh fish coming in and out of season like snapper, grouper, mahi and dh's favorite, pompano.

LovelyLittleBitofSquirrel · 14/08/2024 07:05

@TintackedSea salted gannet?!!
The seafood sounds amazing though 👌

@LifeExperience loving the international contribution!

Re the seafood. I admit to getting irritated when I see TV chefs waxing lyrical about seafood such as langoustines etc being shipped abroad because we Brits "won't" eat it.

I don't eat langoustines because they are shipped abroad and aren't available where I live🙄
I would love to be able to buy fresh langoustines.

I’m from the Black Country and for me it’s faggots. Bloody lovely. Used to see grey peas and bacon a lot but not so often now. Every pub in the Black Country had a pile of cheese and onion cobs on the bar. Yum.

@Gummybear23 those scallops! Oooo! They were called Klondikes as well over our way!

Gatekeeper · 14/08/2024 08:15

Stotties
Pease pudding
Panackalty (corned beef hash type dish)
Ringtons tea

Deathraystare · 14/08/2024 09:58

So do I 😁

We get our stotties sent down from The Big River Bakery and keep a supply in the freezer.

Next time we’re back I’m going to the stottie making class they run. I’m very excited!

My Auntie used to make stotties and stottie buns every week. I can see her now stirring the yeast liquid into flour as the magic beban. Nothing was ever weighed...all by eye and experience. She would leave them to prove in front of the coal fire and I'd sneakily stick me finger in and watch the dough move back to fill the hole.
They were the best things ever, not long out the oven with ' hauf a pund o' Lurpak' on. Food of the Gods...

What are grey peas, please? Are they really grey? Are they made from dried peas?

stevienicksismyfairygodmother · 17/08/2024 06:37

@StellaCruella you're in Kent I imagine. I love Gypsy tart and remember it being served with London sauce in primary school.

I'm NE England and my cousin and her Dad did the Big River stottie making course and thoroughly enjoyed it. I got given one of the stotties they made and it was good. I've always preferred Greggs ones though as I was brought up on them (although my Mam says they taste sweet these days)

We are beekeepers and make our own Meade.

Saveloys, Pease Pudding, Black Bullets (sweets) Brown Ale and as Sinnerboy mentions; Panhaggerty. I have a sudden need to make this as I'm making cheese scones later and have all the ingredients.

@Lifeinlists, @DrFoxtrot Lancashire parkin typically uses golden syrup instead of treacle, and more flour than oatmeal. The golden syrup gives Lancashire parkin a lighter color and a mellower, toffee-like taste.

Warwickshire, where I grew up seems to be a food dessert. I'm just grateful to have moved around lots!

@motherdaughter I'm a Warwickshire girl too and can't think of anything in particular either ☹️ perhaps it's because we are in the middle and everything else crosses over here.

Stilton with Christmas cake for me (I don't think that's particularly Warwickshire though!).

Just to note, I've been having a look at the website, and all their courses are sold out until the end of the year!
