What's your area famous for?
My sister has brought me some Eccles cakes, absolutely delicious!

What is your local speciality?

@Lifeinlists the Black Country Museum apparently fries their fish and chips in dripping. I'm not sure if you can get bits though.

@DrFoxtrot Parkin? Surely that's Yorkshire, you cannot have a bonfire night without it.

You're right! I went there once and had some. Delicious. I'd have to pay the entrance fee I suppose though.

You're right about Parkin too. I mean it's not called Yorkshire Parkin for nothing, is it?!
( Waits for Lancastrian objections Grin)

I can't think of anything exclusive to London? Maybe jellied eels? <<bleeeeee 😬>>

Pie, mash and liquer, never ever with gravy

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 11/08/2024 17:52

It says extra large breadcakes on one of the signs. Are those the bread baps in the photo or are those Scufflers? What a fab name... Scuffler! Grin

My husband is Sheffield born and bred and has never heard of scufflers.

Went to see Poet Laureate Simon Armitage last night and he referred to a Sheffield salad. It's a plate of chips.

@Tdp123 what are clangers?!

@Gummybear23 I'll be honest with you I have been googling recipes for this but it literally is a thick slice of potato in batter 😂
The ones we used to get were amazing - freshly fried out of the oil and as you say, S+V on it - I could eat 5 right now!
You'll have to tell me the best chippies to get them from as they sure don't do them down here in the South East 😒
* gets ready to start looking on Rightmove for properties close to Gummybear's local chip shop *

A clanger is a suet pastry, traditionally steamed but usually baked these days. One half is savoury (mince and onion), the other half is sweet (jam or fruit).

Dixon's Milk Ice

I wasn't born here but moved over Ainley Top 20 years ago and heard of this phenomena.
Tried it but I am sorry to say I wasn't grabbed

DrFoxtrot · 12/08/2024 20:27

@Lifeinlists I object 😂

invisiblecat · 12/08/2024 21:28

Glad to see another brussel-picker here <waves to @Tdp123 >

@LovelyLittleBitofSquirrel Clangers are from Bedfordshire, like a long pasty with savoury at one end and sweet at the other. Jamie Oliver had them on his programme once.

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/08/2024 21:53

Harvey's Bristol Cream sherry. Originally bottled in central Bristol.
I once went to a sherry tasting there...9 sherries later I was banjaxed.

LovelyLittleBitofSquirrel · 13/08/2024 06:44

@Tdp123
@invisiblecat
Thanks both, I have never heard of these before!
In fact, I've learnt so much and want to try everything on this thread now!

Suffolk Rusks... Recipe here...

LovelyLittleBitofSquirrel · 13/08/2024 06:53

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe
@CaptainMyCaptain How interesting - they were for sale in Sheffield's Moor Market if your husband wants to try them.

My little one (owner of hand in photo) thought it was the most marvellous name!
Unfortunately they were all sold out on the day but we shall endeavour to make a return trip especially to buy some.

Another North East one: cheese savoury sandwich filling

And not sure if this is regional or just everywhere-but-London, but in Newcastle all the Italian pizza places do bolognese pizza and I've never seen it in London, and I miss it!

hendersons relish

You're a dee dar 😁
I'll raise you - a Barnsley chop.

Perfectlystill · 13/08/2024 07:18

I've got to say I've read through this list and have not really been taken by any of these!!

I'm from London so I guess Chelsea bun, jellied eels and maybe Tottenham cake. I've never tried the last two.

motherdaughter · 13/08/2024 07:40

@Lifeinlists, @DrFoxtrot Lancashire parkin typically uses golden syrup instead of treacle, and more flour than oatmeal. The golden syrup gives Lancashire parkin a lighter color and a mellower, toffee-like taste.

Warwickshire, where I grew up seems to be a food dessert. I'm just grateful to have moved around lots!

LovelyLittleBitofSquirrel · 13/08/2024 09:16

@RampantIvy
What's a dee dar?! 😄

@Perfectlystill I love Tottenham cake!
It tastes just like school cake.
DH is a Londoner and he says "Cockles?"
That's an East end London thing?

Steak and kidney pie.
We are known as "the pie village".

1stWorldProblems · 13/08/2024 09:27

@WhoppingBigBackside - who do you think makes the best saffron cake? The Rowes ones have been shrinking for some years now & seem to have less fruit.

Pasties. Rattler cider. Both of these have escaped the Duchy. I also adore Vicky's Cloudy White bread.

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/08/2024 09:30

dee dar refers to people whose dialect speech used 'thee' and 'thar' (thou). Dying out now I think.

@1stWorldProblems I have no idea, I'm not Cornish. It looks a bit like a cousin to Bara Brith.

Many so-called bara brith is nothing like the real thing, which has yeast in it.

Isn't Timothy Taylor Yorkshire?
