What one item makes your life a bit nicer?

I have just read a thread about making life easier. It's always meal planning and household appliances.

Anyway it got me thinking whilst having a shower... I love my Bluetooth shower speaker. Being able to listen to my own music in the shower is great.

I don't need it. I can obviously live without it but I really love that little thing!

I also have dogs. I think it's a given that animals and children bring joy.

You have to recommend something to make life nicer.

What are you choosing? Smile

The view out of my window. I look onto hills I watch the seasons change, and the weather changing, I see migratory geese in the winter swallows and swifts in the summer, bats at night, the sun sets over the hills, I see kites flying, and my neighbours and I think occasionally a golden eagle. I watch the cows on the dairy farm, I know when they are turned out in spring that winter is finally over, I see young lambs skipping in the spring and they make me smile, in the winter the hills turn dark the granite outcrops turn black, in the spring they are covered in bright yellow gorse now heather is coming through soon the trees will change colour for autumn.
i used to dream of owning a house with a view and now I’ve got one it just makes me happy.

Are you looking for a lodger, by any chance. Your home sounds blissful 😍

Being out of a care home after 20 months and moving into my own place on Sunday. My bed is arriving tomorrow, an ottoman with all the storage underneath to keep stuff out of the way. No clutter in the bedroom, walk-in wardrobe/dressing room next door (okay, so it's just a teeny tiny room that I didn't know what else to do with, and also a conservatory, I say conservatory, but a decent space that I can use as a craft room and as somewhere to clean down the (as yet to get) rescue dogs when they come in inevitably wet and a bit mucky after a good walk.

Just getting out of the hell hole that is a care home after so long, honestly a cardboard box under a railway bridge would make life a bit (lot) nicer. I'm not even that bothered about "stuff" anymore as 99.9% of mine has been disposed of when my ex-family members thought I was going to kick the bucket and I wouldn't be around to mind!

I moved 250+ miles to get away from toxic family members and start my life again, it is the best thing I could have done and has made my life a helluva lot nicer in so many ways.

That made me both tear up and smile. I hope you have a perfect future in what sounds like a perfect home for you xx

@Arraminta I use the chocoloco gold keratin treatment and have done for years. You can buy on Amazon. It's great, I repeat about every 3-4 months

Gobsmacked! I've been paying £160 every six months at the hairdresser for my keratin treatment.

How do you use it? I'm a bit cack-handed and can't use the straighteners on the back of my head, so unsure if this would work for me. My hairdresser has to go over each section about 5 times to "set" the straight.

Powderblue1 · 13/08/2024 10:07

@HurdyGurdy19 I did the same, I always had it done at the hairdressers and then decided it looked pretty easy and I've done it myself for years now.

The chocoloco has the instructions on the back to follow but basically it's wash with clarifying shampoo, dry hair, apply treatment with gloves, leave 30 mins then dry and then straighten each section five times. Maybe you could ask your husband or a friend to do the back? I did mine last week actually and took me about an hour in total (including leaving it on 30 mins as instructed before drying).

The tube I have will do me about 4/5 times and I'm sure it was only about £25 or so on Amazon.

Powderblue1 · 13/08/2024 10:44

@Arraminta honestly it's so easy and the instructions are in the tube. You can buy individual packed but it cost me about £25 for a bottle that will last me a few goes.

My straighteners do go up to 220c but I have fine hair so I actually do mine on 180c and use a heat protector beforehand and it still works fine with that. I found the high heat sometimes fried the shorter hairs at the front of my face so I prefer to play it safe nowadays and ensure no damage

Scully01 · 13/08/2024 10:52

@Easilydisturbed where did you you get your egg chair? I really want one but worried I'll get one that's a bit rickety

Well, one thing that I love is my hot water dispenser in my bedroom. I press a button and the correct amount of hot water pours into my cup and my green tea steeps nicely while I'm in the shower. Totally unnecessary but makes me very happy!

What? Wow. Off to Google

God that's fantastic! Seriously tempted to try it myself now, though I'm not sure how hot my straighteners go? But even if I need new straighteners it's so much cheaper than £200 every 3 months at Toni & Guy!

@SideProfile what sort of benefits have you found from the acupressure mat?

Can I ask all the Kindle lovers how they find the quality of the downloads? I love my Kindle too, but find the classics (Brontes, Austen, Dickens etc.) read like bad translations and definitely getting worse. I used to like to alternate between new books and classics but have now pretty much given up on classics on my Kindle and back to Oxfam book shop.

I find they are fine if they are a known edition such as Penguin, Oxford World Classics etc. They cost a lot more compared to the free/ultra cheap versions that are badly digitised from old editions, but they are properly edited.

@RubyDarke I usually get classics from Project Gutenberg to read on my Kindle. The layout can occasionally go a bit funny but they’re still perfectly readable - the actual text is fine.

@Scully01 it's the double version of this but we got it for £499 in 2019 in an end of season sale (ordered early August). I saw one in a garden centre and then did some intensive online trawling for a better price and got it from an independent garden centre 200 miles away, free delivery. It is a bit grubby now but otherwise as good as new and it has been heavily used. It has withstood all sorts of storms (we do have the feet secured into the ground with trampoline hooks). So not cheap but in the sense of cost per hour used it has been well worth it.

I've just bought a shakti mat and pillow as a result of this thread!! Trying not to pin ALL my hopes on it...but excited to try it out, for sure.

For me:
A hot bath in cold weather
Heated throw and hot water bottle
My cat
Tea
Jones Road miracle balm

You will NOT regret it. I'm just about to go on mine. I missed yesterday & I really feel it when I miss.

Take it slowly the first week. I highly recommend downloading the app- there's a play-list for every day talking you through what's happening to the body etc. My friend just bought one 2 weeks ago after I recommended, and she said the app has been great.

Good luck!

Not who you asked , but thought I'd reply. I've had mine since Xmas & it's the best thing I've EVER bought.

Me: No more muscle pain under my shoulder blades (where I carry all my stress it seems) or knots in my shoulders. Blissful feeling afterwards- so completely relaxed, including my mind, as I have quite a bit of stress in life (ASN child).

DH: His sciatic pain (lower back) was completely gone after 3 days. He was completely cynical, but is now an utter convert.

I’m very excited to read about the Shakti mat as I’ve ordered one too! also the pillow as I get migraines. Thank you to everyone recommending this!

EasilyDisturbed · 13/08/2024 21:46

Hmm, getting tempted by the shakti mat now. I do a lot of yoga and I know I have a lot of muscle imbalances and areas with stored tension. Does it release your whole body or just the bits touching the mat (some of my worst bits are on my front and sides)

They are brilliant i swear by mine, I can’t get on with the pillow for some reason but I love the mat

Air conditioning in my loft bedroom. I would sell my kids before I got rid of it.
Nothing is better than sleeping in 18• when the rest of the house is 27• in the summer.

What’s a ball park figure, I move out of my loft when it’s really hot would be good to know how much I need to save I’d love this.

There's also a FB group. I'm not in it, but it was linked to me in an email & read a bit of it. Apparent lots of people do their side & many men do their front (I imagine it would be way too sore on breasts, but you could perhaps just do the torso/ hips. People far braver than me also stand on it 😬.

I find it uncomfortable lying on my front on a yoga mat let alone a spiky one but sides would be ok and half on half off for legs. Will think about it!

Cloud44 · 14/08/2024 07:03

Do other accupressure mats work the same or does it have to be a shatki mat in particular?
