Brighton - Less than 10 anti-immigration 'protesters' and about 1,500 counter-protesters with more arriving all the time. Jazz band playing. No violence observed or reported. A couple of buses had to stop for a few minutes to get through the crowd.

Hastings likewise - a handful of anti-immigrationists, and hundreds of counter protesters, chanting "say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here".

Its job was to cause fear and panic, but it backfired as the overwhelming image is going to be 1000s of anti racists protesting.

Thats the image going around the world.

I've been speaking to my neighbours all day, a lockdown type of spirit in my street and lots of people heading to protest against racists (I'm in London)

That aint a good look to show a country full of people rising up "who want their country back" or on the verge of civil war .

Edited

All assumptions, and I'm making assumptions too. We simply don't know who created that list and why.

I think the only thing that seems valid is that the list was fake.

I also think it's incredibly naive to think that a few thousand people coming out and protesting is going to stop the violence.

The 2011 riots where over a shooting, but a lot of people joined in for a free pair of trainers in the looting. A lot of the violence recently has seen people use it as an excuse to loot (albeit for some Greggs sausage rolls). People looking for a fight or free stuff don't care about imagery or politics, they have their own motivations.

I agree. It’s always been the same.

Illegals are different to asylum seekers. The hotels that have been burnt this weekend or attacked were for asylum seekers.

20% of the NHS workers are foreigners. Just saying....

Those in places like hotel accommodation aren't illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants get arrested and put in secure accommodation which they cannot escape prior to being deported.

Unfortunately for you, you've made it clear that you think refugees are illegal immigrants. Self-evidently, they aren't. As a country, we have a centuries-old and very proud tradition of accepting refugees, and of course we have treaty obligations also.

Frankly, your supposed GP friend was playing on your gullibility.

Can you imagine if the government had actually created this list of very specific addresses to target in the middle of riot season, and then they’d been targeted and people had died?

It’s the most wild conspiracy theory I’ve read on here yet.

The list was created by thugs, shared on far-right Telegram groups days ago (which I monitor as part of my job) and was added to by more far-righters (which I saw happen in real time) as they were asked to come up with more ‘targets’.

I was reporting on one of the ‘protests’ tonight for a newspaper (please don’t say legacy media FFS. It’s the language of Trump) and we absolutely did not ‘know’ it was a hoax. Some of the police officers I spoke to today were in tears because they were bloody scared. The business owners boarding up their shops were also terrified.

The implication that this was some kind of clever double bluff by the government is ludicrous. Multiple government departments would have to be involved and there would be a leak within hours.

These thugs planned the protests in these particular locations because they’re ultimately not very bright and they simply crowdsourced the info on the ‘list’ rather than actually thinking about it for more than three minutes.

Looking forward to Tommy’s messages telling everyone how great it is that there was no violence tonight, seeing as he’s such a peaceful guy.

The police in my area said that they were just rumours and that people should go about their normal business.

nicetuchus · 07/08/2024 23:41

Really?

This isn't even an isolated example.

Of course people like this should be condemned and charged, I have no idea if this was an isolated incident and am having trouble with reverse image search to find out who this is, how it was dealt with and what happened as no news site has picked up this image, not even the JC. So if you've got a link to give me context so I can make comment that would be useful xx Of course there are disgusting antisemitic imbeciles in every demographic and should 100% be shunned and face criminal charges for any blatent racist gestures.

murasaki · 08/08/2024 00:13

I'm always fascinated by Schrodinger's immigrant, who is simultaneously claiming all the benefits while stealing all the jobs.

Some of these people don't have the brains they were born with.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/08/2024 00:14

Don’t you hope someone phoned 999 about a lost cat stuck up a tree and the police left en masse leaving the “protestors” to face their nemesis!

It appears the police took the away in a van - towards the railway station. It's in here:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cy8497l7dx8t

Is that what they mean by 'two tier policing' - being looked after and given a lift part of the way back to wherever their home was?😂

Marseillaise · 08/08/2024 00:14

All these claims that the list was fake are incredibly Trumpesque. There have obviously been some very panicked discussions this evening amongst Yaxley-Lennon and his thick mates.

miniaturepixieonacid · 08/08/2024 00:17

LiterallyOnFire · 07/08/2024 22:58

At first I didn’t ever believe this was a true list. But I thought it was the EDl lot trying to bait out the Muslims like in Birmingham which resulted in them causing chaos, behaving badly and proving their two tier police claim.

Having seen the Sheffield location now. I think it’s the gov. There’s no way EDL would pick that location. And my god if that’s true they have pulled a blinder.

You're not the only one speculating along those lines.

Let's hope it's worked and taken the wind out of the rioters' sails. A week or two of having to repeat this would be expensive and very disruptive.

If that's true then I don't think they should be proud of themselves at all.

I don't know if the expected riots took place or not where I was tonight (I saw lots of police while driving to and from where I had to be and heard a bit of shouting but nothing else). But what did happen was a lot of very frightened young people:
2 non white teens who stayed at home rather than come to our rehearsal (one too frightened to leave her house and one whose parents said no).
1 young person in tears because of how horrifying she found the whole situation.
2 young people feeling unsafe and uncomfortable just crossing a carpark to a car.
A leisure/arts centre locked down for an hour with us all inside because of reports that 'they' were in the next street. No idea whether that was true or not.

If that was all a set up then it makes me angry. Not as angry as the riots themselves of course but still. Making people feel unsafe where they live is not okay, whoever does it.

You know it is possible to believe this list to be fake and to abhor far-right thuggery too?

They were trying to quell the attendance figures FFS. Part of their job is to make people feel safe.

My friend works in A&E. When some were taken in with injuries at the weekend they refused to be treated by anyone who wasn't white and British. They were hurling abuse at any non-white staff who even walked past the room. Disgusting!

I wonder if the nhs has to accommodate this disgusting behaviour and give the racists their choice of staff? I would hope that if they are refusing treatment a&e should be able to chuck them out

So the very many new arrivals who tossed their passports into the sea before they landed, and then claimed to be refugees are all genuine? without paperwork how does anybody know who they are? Fact is, nobody knows. They can’t leave them on the beach so they ferry them off to the holiday inn.

I ask again, why are they leaving France? A safe haven for refugees I would think, but maybe they don’t get the luxury of hotel accomodation in France.

Shops were closing early and boarding up, cultural events cancelled, etc. The police were essentially saying not to bother doing that as it's just rumours. This actually sounds the opposite to what you're saying.

WalkingaroundJardine · 08/08/2024 00:25

@EasterIssland Those poor Filipino nurses! There is no excuse for attacking them.

Meanwhile, here in Australia, the counter racism marchers have impressed the media and it’s currently the top story for this rag. The world is definitely watching.

To those saying that the immigrants working for NHS and so are welcome , I’m glad you feel like that. Not everyone does and that’s why these measurements need to be put in place

It's an interesting, but not new, idea. There was talk about refusing NHS treatment to anyone who refused to have the covid jab.

As much as it sounds a good idea, it does comprise the ideals of the NHS being available to everyone. Where do we stop? Refusing cancer treatment to smokers etc?

DreamTheMoors · 08/08/2024 00:35

hellesbells · 07/08/2024 20:16

Why are you confused about that?

During the US protests for Gaza in New York and Philadelphia and Los Angeles, a common refrain was the chant “from the river to the sea…”
A journalist walked among the crowds and asked many of the protesters, “which river? which sea?”
Very, very few could name them.
Some laughed, some said they didn’t know and some got angry.
So it seems like it’s not only this person you’re confronting who’s confused.
I’ve got no beef with you - but when even protesters don’t know why or whom or what they’re protesting, it’s a little off key.

No, that's not remotely analagous. There are signs up in hospitals etc that abuse (of any sort) won't be tolerated aren't there? I don't know how/if it's enforced, but staff should be protected from all forms of abuse including racial.

Racist attacks and murder has been around forever, and will continue to do so. Notting Hill riots were nearly 70 years ago! Race riots and hatred are part of our culture!

This isn't the end of anything. The Far right receded after the 70s and 80s and the Tories has given them new life by pandering to them for years, to attract voters seeping to Farage. Last week was their calling card they are back and I'm certain we can look forward to regular protests and clashes with the anti racists and non white people (just like we did in the 70s and 80s on a regular basis).

Things will get a LOT uglier than we've seen, I'm certain of that.

If you are one of the counter protesters that came out tonight- a big fat thank you from someone who sat her kids down and showed them the pictures of you to show them what humanity at its best looks like.

Well said. Do we think Jewish people would feel safe at these 'counter' protests? Or might they feel exactly how others would feel among anti-immigration crowds?

I hope we're not just switching one form of 'unacceptable racism' for a form of 'acceptable' anti-semitism. No racism is right.
