What odd fads did you have at school?

As a teenager a popular girl got a short haircut but had a lock of longer hair at the nape of her neck. Everyone started to copy it and it was a crazy fad for a while.

I've googled to add a picture but couldn't find anything close to it.

We also had a fad for wearing one blue sock. God knows why.

Anyone remember any fads?

So many of these! At my school we would cover are folders with fun fur and books with a collage of stuff cut from bliss and sugar magazines stuck with sticky back plastic (which is an absolute ball ache to get on without crinkles.

VeryQuaintIrene · 08/08/2024 15:21

We had to have a so called prayer folder with typed versions of various prayers stuck in and we decorated them in a quite unholy way. Anyone remember Kinky Dan stickers that came with horrible bubble gum in the 1970s?

ThelittleBee · 08/08/2024 15:21

Platinum white blond on the top half of the hair and jet black underneath. I remember getting that done in year 9, it looked bloody awful. And you would wear it with a quiff. Oh and people gelling two cockroach strands at the front of the face,

Wearing granny chains (belcher style link)
Using the inside of felt tip pens or quink ink to make coloured streaks in our hair (used to drip down your neck if it rained)
Kilts becoming a fashion statement
collecting the leather flower shape that comes with kickers shoes and adding them to your next pair. the more tags you had the better
Using the metal BRUT aftershave tag from the bottle as a necklace
Shrinking crisp packets and making badges out of them

Was it not Pods shoes that had the flower shaped leather thing attached. The more you had on your shoes the cooler you were.

DeltaFlyer · 08/08/2024 15:42

Oh I'd forgotten about the fuzzy trousers!

Also those long denim jackets you could only get from the market that had furry hoods.

Speaking of Human league. We all also grew a massive fringe out a la Phil Oakley style. Completely covering one eye

God I fancied the pants off him ❤️

swimmingviolinist · 08/08/2024 15:51

just making our skirts as short as possible and tying our shirts knotted over the tummy

Painting your nails with pastel coloured tippex.

Christ knows why, looking back.

A particularly mad girl in my class painted her teeth white with tippex during a dull R.E. lesson.
God knows how it didn’t poison her.

Haha, we never went that far, although RE was pretty dull.

RE was so dull but somehow I managed an A*. Must have been a sign of all the waffling I can do that actually makes no sense haha

I’ve just remembered Purple Ronnie!! Couldn’t have a birthday without a purple
Ronnie card.

How could I have forgotten Purple Ronnie? It was everywhere for a few years!

If your bottom burps in public
Try to say in time
Goodness gracious what a whiff!
It doesn't smell like mine.

Was a classic of the Purple Ronnie oeuvre.

DoopSnoggySnogg · 08/08/2024 21:45

I went right off my first boyfriend when he gave me a Purple Ronnie valentines card. I found it genuinely cringe-inducing 🙈

We had the massive quiff hair at the front of a perm. Used to go through about 3 cans of Insette a week. Mine wouldn’t have wavered in a hurricane!😂 My poor friend, bless her..she had what seemed like 3 strands of hair that never stood up, no matter how hard she tried to convince it to - even with the Insette!

We also had the Groslch bottle tops on shoes. Then we had either Kickers or Pod shoes that also had a tag. RI carriers too. Then there was NafNaf and Chipie jackets. United Colors of Benetton t shirts. Head bags. And I also remember pretty much every girl in our year at one point had the same flowery shirt, in one of 2 colours, from Topshop.

Oh yea quiff hair in the 00s with the rest poker straight. I wore my hair like this 90% of the time!

Imagine this photo but with a longer tail at the nape, about two inches

I remember this. My silly self thought this was just how your hair went when you cut it that short? I recall it being a smaller curl left over tho.

BlankSpaceForBrains · 08/08/2024 23:06

Chinese burns right between our eyebrows.
folding a silver chewing gum wrapper into a point then jabbing it into our metal fillings (it bloody hurt!)
Holding your breath and someone pushing you up against a wall pushing on your ribs as hard as they could til you almost passed out.
Kickers shoes for secondary school with scrunched socks being the only acceptable socks allowed. Anyone wearing plain knee socks was a snob/nob/teachers pet. (Not my rules)
The 'Snookie' hairdo long before Snookie even appeared on our screens.
Hair and body glitter when going to the under 18s disco, we sprayed that shit everywhere!

BlankSpaceForBrains · 08/08/2024 23:09

Vanilla Fields. Everyone who was anyone had a bottle of it and doused themselves in it.

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 08/08/2024 23:09

Benson & Hedges

This was a beautiful thread to read!

PP mentioned nail piercings! I used to drive my mum mad stealing one of her earrings and inevitably losing them, repeatedly.

I still have scars on my fingers and hands from chicken scratches. And shame from my tiny tie. We all insisted we had bad feet or ankles too to be allowed trainers.

Richmond super kings purchased with a freshly released £2 coin that should have been my lunch money.

Blue lipstick that made teeth look yellow with added body and hair glitter/hair mascara or those sachets that dyed hair red.

Xtina with black on bottom and blonde. I had it but red and blonde - except I had no idea what to ask the hairdresser for so my blonde bit was "warm tones" as they put it. It's now bleached and toned within an inch of its life after being straightened to death.

Babyliss straighteners that were 3 in 1 straight, big crimp and little crimp and took 15 mins to warm up. Game changer as I also had no idea how to blow dry hair until I'd left home.

Wide leg flares that got soaked up the legs with a sniff of rain. Later followed by pumps that melted off our feet with rain.

Those... boots with the fur... and I don't mean uggs. I paid £50 in old money for some yeti type boots from river island and thought I was the bees knees.

BlankSpaceForBrains · 08/08/2024 23:12

Using the iron to straighten your hair. Modern straightners will never compare to how straight the good household iron got it.

Scifiiscompletebollocks · 08/08/2024 23:17

Yeah to the shipyard workers bags. I had one in sixth form. Me and my friend wrote proverbs on ours in marker pen. Many a Mickle makes a muckle or something.

I learnt how to do that cut, and I’d charge people from school £2 for it.

Kept me busy for around 6 months, at least.

lastminpanic23 · 08/08/2024 23:22

Blue mascara.
Hair mascara.
Lambrini or cheaper alternatives.
Tooth gems.
Pierced fingernails.
Piercings in the beauty spot area Marilyn monroe style.
The babyliss straighteners someone mentioned down thread. You had to put water in them and they took about 20 minutes to get hot.
New York yankees baseball caps.
Maybelline mousse foundation.
Elizabeth Duke jewellery from Argos.
Snake on the Nokia 3210.
Composing your own ringtones using complicated numerical codes.
Nsync - Dirtypop.

LemonySnickets · 08/08/2024 23:25

My sister had a rat tail for a while!

Another stupid fad....stealing car badges and wearing them hanging off a necklace!

Dummy earrings.
