What odd fads did you have at school?

As a teenager a popular girl got a short haircut but had a lock of longer hair at the nape of her neck. Everyone started to copy it and it was a crazy fad for a while.

I've googled to add a picture but couldn't find anything close to it.

We also had a fad for wearing one blue sock. God knows why.

Anyone remember any fads?

We did that… and wearing your tie skinny side not fat

HÆLTHEPAIN · 08/08/2024 00:16

We had the massive quiff hair at the front of a perm. Used to go through about 3 cans of Insette a week. Mine wouldn’t have wavered in a hurricane!😂 My poor friend, bless her..she had what seemed like 3 strands of hair that never stood up, no matter how hard she tried to convince it to - even with the Insette!

We also had the Groslch bottle tops on shoes. Then we had either Kickers or Pod shoes that also had a tag. RI carriers too. Then there was NafNaf and Chipie jackets. United Colors of Benetton t shirts. Head bags. And I also remember pretty much every girl in our year at one point had the same flowery shirt, in one of 2 colours, from Topshop.

Ties tied the wrong way, so the thin bit was at the front (but really short), then tucking the long, wide bit at the back into your shirt so you just had a tiny bit of tie hanging out.

Interested to know if this was just my school as I've never seen this mentioned anywhere else 😂

Boys did that at my school. Girls wore their ties short too but really loose with the top 2 buttons undone and the thick bit at the front and the long thin bit tucked in their shirt.

Oh, and I also attempted to give my friend a rat tail hair cut. His mum was not impressed. 😂

DoopSnoggySnogg · 08/08/2024 00:20

Massive, far too long, far too wide flared jeans that ended up soaked to the knee when it rained (Scotland, so at all times 😭). But it was basically social suicide to wear jeans that didn’t cover your shoes entirely.

FloofPaws · 08/08/2024 00:24

@oneskip I think that may be a Vodal Sassoon cut? That looks like Linda evangelist

SugarMiceInTheRain · 08/08/2024 00:35

Lighter burn smileys. Why would you do that? Who knows, but several girls in my class did. 😔 I wonder if they still have scars from branding themselves...

There were some pretty dodgy haircut fads around while I was at school too. And don't get me started on the dubious fashion choices in the 80s and early 90s! 🤣

changedusernameforthis1 · 08/08/2024 00:39

So many. Stabbing pencils into one side of a rubber and then sketching your initials into the other side.
Brown hair with blonde highlights.
We had striped ties and the school rule was that at least five stripes must be showing on your tie. So, naturally, we made sure there was always less than five at any given time 😂

Those paper things where you choose a colour, then a number etc and get a message at the end. I never did learn how to make my own.

Theimpossiblegirl · 08/08/2024 00:42

Oh God, my mother did that haircut to me. I have actually never forgiven her!

allfurcoatnoknickers · 08/08/2024 00:48

@SugarMiceInTheRain Oh my god I remember girls doing the lighter smilies. The very idea made me feel ill.

Also, the great yoyo craze of 1998 was a weird one.

Mummyratbag · 08/08/2024 00:50

The rat's tail was called a wilf at our school.

Playing raps was our stupidest trend. Scraping each others knuckles with a pack of cards till they bled... this was in the Don't Die of Ignorance era!!

Mamaneedsgin · 08/08/2024 00:56

Benetton drawstring bags with the logo on the front. They had thin straps that dug into your shoulders if you had books to carry.

Naf Naf jumpers and t-shirts.

Golf jumpers were the must-have at my school, navy Pringle jumpers with a Pringle roll-neck underneath. And Paco jumpers with massive diamonds on them.

Everyone had a shellsuit (shudder) but you had to unzip the legs for PE and wear them with the rolled down white socks and hi-top trainers.

Ah, the early 90s!

I was desperate for clackers when I was at primary school!

I had Clackers. And the bruises all round my wrist to go with it as well.

When the news came out that some of them had started to shatter, my dad confiscated them. I was not happy.

KievLoverTwo · 08/08/2024 01:04

Shrinking crisp packets in the oven and putting them on key rings.

Grolsch bottle tops on the front of shoes.

DiscoBeat · 08/08/2024 01:07

Elaborate erasers that smelled of strawberries and banana!

Peanutbutter8989 · 08/08/2024 01:10

Scoobi keyrings
Odd socks
Knee high multicoloured toe socks
Tinest phone / bag possible
Air max 90s

Omg I had forgotten raps, we would play this till we bled! Approx 1987 Scotland.

coffeeandteav · 08/08/2024 01:12

The chicken scratches were on the back of our hand for us. Awful

Mummyratbag · 08/08/2024 01:14

@Rockmehardplace - yes about the same time! I was in 6th form by then so even more ridiculous and very sadistic

SomethingBlues · 08/08/2024 01:33

Stripey knee high socks - usually in neon colours and usually odd… I have no idea why we did this

SunflowersMidwinter · 08/08/2024 01:39

oneskip · 07/08/2024 23:08

That's it. It was early 80s. Weirdest thing. The whole school had them for about a month

Jeeze OP. Some of us weren't born that far back

CiaDinnerout · 08/08/2024 01:39

pogs
pokemon cards
coloured plastic/rubber bracelets

Funnywonder · 08/08/2024 01:49

Canvas satchels as school bags. They were dark grey or blue and used by shipyard workers and the like to carry their lunch and a big flask of tea (my dad had one.) They weren't really big enough to use as a school bag to be honest, but loads of girls in my school had them.

Granny shoes. They were high heeled lace up shoes, usually brown. They were ridiculous, but God I longed for a pair. I can't believe our school allowed them.

Rat's tails. They were banned at my school. But ours were at the side and often platted.

Lots of things were banned.

We were allowed studs or sleeper earrings. Then the rule changed to only 1 pair. Then the rule changed to one pair, worn one in each ear, in the matching holes.

Rosary rings were a trend (the school was run by nuns).

In what was then 5th year the prefects all had a sash, there were clippie little animals and we would clip them on our sashes.

The sacristan prefect (who got things ready for mass) wore a clippie devil on hers. We had only nominated her because she was the only protestant in the school and we thought it was funny.

anywhichone · 08/08/2024 05:00

We use to have a really long fringe that you would get a large round brush and spray it so it stuck up in an arch.

Also had ribbed knee length socks that you would roll down to your ankle
