What odd fads did you have at school?

As a teenager a popular girl got a short haircut but had a lock of longer hair at the nape of her neck. Everyone started to copy it and it was a crazy fad for a while.

I've googled to add a picture but couldn't find anything close to it.

We also had a fad for wearing one blue sock. God knows why.

Anyone remember any fads?

You had to wear socks not tights, but 3 pairs of the really thick ones so they scrunched down in neat folds. We looked ridiculous 😂. Also those little jelly bracelets

OrangeFurever · 07/08/2024 23:07

Neon straws filled with sherbet. Got banned at our school. So did Pogs

Imagine this photo but with a longer tail at the nape, about two inches

I did this to my older sisters hair 🙈.. She had to go to the hairdresser … She got in trouble as they were not surprised about me but she shouldn’t have let me do it … They were called a tail if I am not wrong

Op was it this? My cousin had it in the 80s and I was fascinated

That's it. It was early 80s. Weirdest thing. The whole school had them for about a month

The main weird fad I remember was using proper office briefcases for school (around 1994)

definitely remember the ratstail haircuts but also the shaved undercut with long ponytail on top

The thin strip of the tie with thick end tucked inside the shirt was also a trend at our school

oneskip · 07/08/2024 23:11

In primary school we had clackers but they got banned so of course we wanted them even more

At my school and 6th form when Happy Hour Again by House martins was played at a disco everyone lay on their backs and did the dying fly. When I got to Uni and hit the floor when House martins started I discovered it was an extremely localised trend.

Hilarious!!

I'm sure we did do stuff - think the Grolsh bottle stoppers on shoes made an attempt (thank you Bros) but my dad selfishly wouldn't drink it 😉. Didn't last too long thankfully.

Friendship bracelets were a thing for a good while. That was everywhere though I think.

Also recall massive scrunchies or scarfs tied around high ponytails. As well as long white socks pushed down being essential.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 07/08/2024 23:11

Lads had that haircut - usually plaited - but don't remember any girls having it.

There was a spate of girls having normal looking mid length bobs, with really drastic but hidden undercuts.

I remember both of those. Think you can still get the straws.

murasaki · 07/08/2024 23:13

Painting your nails with pastel coloured tippex.

Christ knows why, looking back.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 07/08/2024 23:14

Omg. Just remembered pierced fingernails!! 😂

OneFrenchEgg · 07/08/2024 23:15

@oneskip so funny. Why would anyone do that😂😂 we also had the Grolsch bottle tops in shoes. I just remember fairly basic fads like Karen Mullen plastic bags being used for school,

murasaki · 07/08/2024 23:16

Nerds were the sweet of choice when I was 11/12. No wonder we were all hopped up on sugar.

Noonelikesasloppytrifle · 07/08/2024 23:17

River Island carrier bags used as regular bags.
Blue mouth sweets
Furry sticker collections
Weird fringes which were hair sprayed up into a sort of side quiff. I didn't have one but certainly coveted one.

AnImaginaryCat · 07/08/2024 23:17

Oh just recalled slip on shoes with a really thin strap. The strap had to be pushed back (and not used as a stap). I absolutely yearned for them but my mum would only allow me sensible t-bar Clarks shoes (in patent leather shudders).

Think I might have forgotten that as I'd buried the trauma!!

Tarkan · 07/08/2024 23:19

The poor teachers must have had a nightmare with some of the "fads" at my school.

Chicken scratches was a common one.

Putting tiger balm under your eyes so it made you cry.

Our high school first year techy classroom had a hidden area at the back so it was often used to sneak into and there was a time people were making each other faint by pressing against their neck.

And there were a few kids who would use the gas taps in science to put gas in their mouths and breathe on an open lighter. I'm sure a few of them lost eyebrows doing that. 🙈

Summerspritzer123 · 07/08/2024 23:22

Tooth gems
Little metal robot doll necklace with gems in it? Anyone remember? I had a mini version, someone at high school had the large version!
Kookai bags/Jane Norman bags
Concealer on your lips
Hair scrapped back with only the 2 thinnest strands of front hair pulled out

Justme10 · 07/08/2024 23:23

Jane Norman school bag but then using the Jane Norman shopping bag for your PE kit.

Dyed black hair but bleach blonde fringe. That resulted in a lot of grey fringes from home dying Grin

BobbyBiscuits · 07/08/2024 23:24

I used to want that bob with the tail thing. My hair was so fine I never managed it, and my hairdresser just did what he liked as I was a child! Lol.

I also remember patterned or black waistcoats being a thing in the late 80s. I wore that in year six with pride. Despite looking like I'd stolen a snooker players clothing. Along with light pink lipstick to copy Wendy James?!

In my primary school there was a trend for collecting beads, and putting them on safety pins. Then thread the safety pins onto elastic? But noone ever actually wore them, just made them and showed them off?!

Pop swatch watches were massive in about 1990. I remember being so chuffed I had one with planets instead of numbers with a luminous yellow see through trim.

Also global hypercolour t shirts that changed colour when you sweated.

In early secondary school it was all about using sun-in to try and bleach your hair. Never quite worked though?!

This was a definite thing around 1983/4. You plaited the longer hair.

Rockmehardplace · 07/08/2024 23:26

This is bringing back so many memories! The grolsh bottle tops on shoes evolved at our school into keyrings, charms & any old tat on your shoes.
Glitter hairspray - basically looked like sparkly dandruff
I had one of those weird standy-uppy side quiff fringes a pp mentioned
Black bomber jackets with orange lining, so many people had them it looked like the school uniform
And we would NEVER have worn out black tights without patterned ankle socks over them!

That's hilarious 😂

Definitely socks over tights. Always black socks though, whether over tights or not. White socks meant you were a virgin and were social death.
