What odd fads did you have at school?

As a teenager a popular girl got a short haircut but had a lock of longer hair at the nape of her neck. Everyone started to copy it and it was a crazy fad for a while.

I've googled to add a picture but couldn't find anything close to it.

We also had a fad for wearing one blue sock. God knows why.

Anyone remember any fads?

Tooth gems
Little metal robot doll necklace with gems in it? Anyone remember? I had a mini version, someone at high school had the large version!
Kookai bags/Jane Norman bags
Concealer on your lips
Hair scrapped back with only the 2 thinnest strands of front hair pulled out

We must be from the same era I just realised I still do the pony tail thing 🤦‍♀️

anywhichone · 08/08/2024 05:10

We had a school disco (early nineties) if love shack came on we would stand in a circle and put one arm into the circle and bring it out (like a group high five) repeatedly for the whole song.

Galoop · 08/08/2024 05:19

We used to make ourselves hyperventilate and pass out (someone would hold your throat). I can't believe how stupid we were!

Turning our skirts over at the waist on the way to school so they were really short..work with tights and Dolcis shoes with a heel or Kickers. If not the skirts, then baggy black school trousers with oversized denim shirts tucked in. We had long hair lots of Rimmel heather shimmer lipstick to make the look more feminine but cool 😂
Loved my oversized black bomber jacket and awful plastic string Jd sports bag as your school bag 🤷🏻‍♀️
We’d have those see through drink cartons with a straw but wouldn’t use the straw, instead would turn the carton upside down, bite a hole in and drink it through that.
Mid 90’s North west-some of the best years of my life

I was never cool enough to be able to drink from those cups upside down.

Pretending not to like whatever flavour of crisps the popular girls didn't like.
Unbending a paper clip and putting it in your mouth so it looked like you had braces on your teeth.

Buying a cubic zirconia ring from Argos and telling everyone you were engaged to some random boy you fancied.
Having a massive strop when the pe teacher made you take your ring off before playing netball.
Pretending to faint on the football pitch in the hope that Kevin from year 11 would notice you.
Multiple scrunchies worn at the same time.
Socks worn over tights
Wide legged black trousers
Begging your mum for a pair of skin tight black flares for school after she had just bought you a pair of wide legged trousers that will now never be worn.
Skirts worn over jeans
Ski pants
Begging your mum to take the foot strap thing of your ski pants because ski pants were out and leggings were in
Watching star trek the next generation so you could impress boys with your star trek knowledge the next day (that one might have just been me and it didn't even work!)

Please tell me that you're currently married to Kevin from year 11?? 😉

DeltaFlyer · 08/08/2024 07:24

We had the chicken scratches at my school except we called them a 99 because you had to run your fingernail back and forth 99 times for it to work (scar) properly.

Girls only wore trousers and you were coolest if you went to a certain shop in town and got kickflare trousers and then wore kickers shoes with them.
I wasn't the coolest sadly

Monkeybutt1 · 08/08/2024 07:46

Fuzzy peach or dewberry body spray from the body shop.

RosyappleA · 08/08/2024 08:40

Sherbet straws, those bracelets we would make with plastic strings (that smelt like weed), dummy necklaces, bright coloured shoelaces on black shoes, hair was completely sleeked back and gelled rock solid, very short ties, ponytails to the side, the up-do with two thin plaits hanging out at the bottom…

RosyappleA · 08/08/2024 08:42

I have to add those awful black very elastic very tight trousers that frayed at the seems and looked like you had a hairy bum 😂

RosyappleA · 08/08/2024 09:02

@Summerspritzer123 I still have my ragdoll pendant and it is worth a lot more now

Oganesson118 · 08/08/2024 09:25

I remember so many of these.

In terms of hair I remember a phase of people dying the front bits blonde a la Geri Halliwell (is it called a moneypiece) when I was in year 7. Also wearing lots and lots of little butterfly clips!

Jelly shoes - I believe I actually found the things comfortable! Or maybe I just told myself that…

Tamagotchis

Adidas tracksuits especially those bottoms with poppers. My German teacher said she didn't know why we bothered with a uniform since on non uniform day we all turned up looking much the same in various colours of these anyway.

Tattoo necklaces or a necklace you brought back from holiday with a little shell on it.

Baggy jeans that trail on the floor so you got rising damp half way up your legs and chains attached to your belt loops.

Purplepeopleeaterz · 08/08/2024 09:33

Donkey jackets so you looked like a bin man rather than a Dexy's midnight runner! They went out to be followed by a leather jacket, my parents couldn't afford one but my older brothers girlfriend gave me her old one, I never took it off!

Black court shoes with a small heel, my mum refused to buy me a pair so I bought some shoe paint which dried to a thin layer of rubber & bits peeled off daily showing the original bright red shoe.

Boys had to have Farrah trousers & wear Lynx deodorant

Chicken scratches (just why???)

The phrase Dig me up man.... no idea what it meant but we all used it?

Princess Di swept fringe with half a can of hairspray to hold it in place...sorry ozone layer. Crimped and permed bleached hair, most of us used Sun in.

Pink & blue eyeshadow not blended and the darkest foundation again not blended into the neck.

hockityponktas · 08/08/2024 09:51

Chicken scratches
lighter smilies
adidas 3 stripe trousers
Wella shaders and toner sachets, everyone used the red ones!
2 bleached strips at the front of your hair, the rest scraped into a tight pony tail.
sun in!

Gcsunnyside23 · 07/08/2024 23:07

You had to wear socks not tights, but 3 pairs of the really thick ones so they scrunched down in neat folds. We looked ridiculous 😂. Also those little jelly bracelets

I never wore them but remember the trend, I'm 50
I also remember grolsch bottle tops on shoes because of Bros.

x2boys · 08/08/2024 10:04

coffeeandteav · 08/08/2024 01:12

The chicken scratches were on the back of our hand for us. Awful

I never understood this ,they looked awful
We had to.have a very serious talk from our headmistress in junior 4 about them and how they might cause blood poisoning

HÆLTHEPAIN · 08/08/2024 00:16

We had the massive quiff hair at the front of a perm. Used to go through about 3 cans of Insette a week. Mine wouldn’t have wavered in a hurricane!😂 My poor friend, bless her..she had what seemed like 3 strands of hair that never stood up, no matter how hard she tried to convince it to - even with the Insette!

We also had the Groslch bottle tops on shoes. Then we had either Kickers or Pod shoes that also had a tag. RI carriers too. Then there was NafNaf and Chipie jackets. United Colors of Benetton t shirts. Head bags. And I also remember pretty much every girl in our year at one point had the same flowery shirt, in one of 2 colours, from Topshop.

The quiff was very popular at our school too, where it was called the Parksy bump after the girl with the most giant one.

Allmytroublesseemedsofaraway · 08/08/2024 10:16

@ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews Anyone could do it 😅

This was human league style. The girls in human league both had short hair with the plait at the back. Think the guy did too. I had my hair cut just like it as did a few of my friends. If you watch don’t want me video you just about see it when one of the girls turns her head quickly.

reesewithoutaspoon · 08/08/2024 11:13

Speaking of Human league. We all also grew a massive fringe out a la Phil Oakley style. Completely covering one eye

What odd fads did you have at school?
HowAmITheCatsGranny · 08/08/2024 12:00

Socks had to be those long tube type socks pushed down (I think we called them slouchy socks?) heaven forbid you wore ankle socks!
Boot cut trousers.. definitely no sock / ankle showing.. they got soo wet when it rained.
Ellesse sportswear.
Poker straight hair, and the smoothest ponytails with the two bits hanging out at the front.
Record bags as school bags.
Dummy necklaces were a brief thing.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/08/2024 12:05

Dummy necklaces, and those toys with balls on that clicked.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/08/2024 12:06

Yes to shag bands!

Whynottrythis · 07/08/2024 23:57

There was a skip-it fad at primary school. All the girls brought their skip-its to school to use in the playground.

I was desperate for one of those. My mum wouldn't let me have one, as she said I was too accident prone. She sort of had a point, I did fracture my ankle just holding a skipping rope. And I'm totally not bitter about not being allowed a lolo ball. Not at all.

GuineaPotato · 08/08/2024 12:35

Hair mascara, trousers skirts (they were banned in school eventually) and adidas popper trousers

Oganesson118 · 08/08/2024 14:08

Knee socks pulled up were “virgin socks” and social suicide. Makes me
laugh how we were all horrified at the idea of being called a virgin at the age of 11!
