Cancel holiday to Cornwall due to riots?!

ShouldICancel · 05/08/2024 13:00

I've name changed for this as I feel quite silly even asking this! We're meant to be in Cornwall from this weekend for 7 nights and DH is saying we'll have to wait and see what happens with all the riots. For context, we're brown, but not Muslim (I say this because I know Muslims are being sadly targeted :( )

At first I thought DH is overly cautious (which he tends to be) and needs a reality check, but having said that, for the first time in almost 18 years I've felt a bit unsafe in the UK, so maybe I'm the one who needs a reality check.

While most of the news has focused on the riots in the north, I wanted to check with those in South (especially Cornwall) if you've seen any issues? Would it be safe to travel? My parents will also be joining us, but they will be travelling by train from Paddington. I'm hoping the train journey is safe. My parents don't live in the UK and are just visiting over the summer, so they do sometimes stand out more than me, DH and the kids.

TIA!

Yes nothing to worry about here youl be fine

Iwasafool · 05/08/2024 13:45

We live in south Devon and my husband is brown. He was feeling a bit uncomfortable about it all and in the past we have experienced racism/prejudice here but today we went shopping and had lunch out and no issues.

Hope you manage to get your holiday.

ShouldICancel · 05/08/2024 13:47

Thank you all for the positive messages. As I said in the beginning of my post, I did feel silly even asking this question, as I've been to Cornwall multiple times before and never felt out of place. It's just the images and videos in the news that got me worried and completely overthinking it all.

Having said that, I do hope everything calms down and the people rioting come to their senses (I'm an optimist or as DH would say a bit naive 😊)

Thanks for the support! It feels so odd to be worried about this... I've never ever felt out of place in the UK. In fact, I would even say I'm more comfortable here than in my home country!

@Velvian we're going to St. Ives

I live in Cornwall... You've absolutely nothing to worry about, probably the safest place to be in England right now.

St Ives is lovely & its surrounds is lovely, you'll have a great time.

WYorksTemp · 05/08/2024 13:48

So sorry you're having to even think of this, OP.

We're slightly concerned about our holiday, going in the opposite direction - travelling around small towns and cities in North Yorkshire/Northumberland/Tyneside next week, an area we know and love, have been on so many holidays there in years past.

But seeing the reports in Middlesbrough of cars being stopped to check the ethnicity of the passengers has made me feel eurgh. We are a mixed ethnicity family, never felt uncomfortable about it before but now...

We're putting our plans on halt for Lake district next week, I wouldn't risk it.

I'm in the north about an hour from the lake District. There's been no rioting here. But then I don't think anyone would riot here after embarrassing themselves over the Ellie Williams fiasco.

Obek1999 · 05/08/2024 13:48

It's not just about actual rioting though. It's about covert racists feeling emboldened by all the uprising and making comments where previously they wouldn't have done.

BMW6 · 05/08/2024 13:49

The knuckle daggers organising these riots are selecting areas very carefully. All inner city areas of deprivation where they know lots are like-minded or would seize an opportunity to battle with the Police and do some looting under the cover of rioting.

You'll be perfectly safe in Cornwall OP, have a wonderful holiday!

Sunnymummy8 · 05/08/2024 13:49

I live this SW.. and if anything the opinion is of the complete opposite.. I would like to believe you would be safe

AngryBird6122 · 05/08/2024 13:49

@WYorksTemp where have you seen that? Sounds worrying

Ohtoberetired · 05/08/2024 13:50

I could have wept reading your post OP. It’s scandalous that you and your family have been put into this position, where you would even have to think about being unsafe in your own country. I hope the justice system comes down hard on these vile thugs and they’re dealt with swiftly. They’re an absolute disgrace and an affront to all decent members of society.

I hope you go on holiday and have a wonderful time.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 05/08/2024 13:50

No it wouldn’t stop me. Enjoy your holiday.

I think they are unlikely to travel that far, as they would have to have an escape route to get away from the police afterwards, and it would be too easy for the police to set up road blocks on the main roads. Assuming there has been actual advance planning involved.

ladycarlotta · 05/08/2024 13:52

I am so very sorry that you're having to worry about this at all. I agree that St Ives is probably a pretty safe place in the current context but you are not unreasonable to have these concerns. It really breaks my heart what is going on. I hope you have a wonderful holiday.

Nosleepforthismum · 05/08/2024 13:52

BobnLen · 05/08/2024 13:18

Places more likely in the SW are probably Exeter and Torquay

I think Plymouth is actually the most likely.

TooTiredOfThisShit · 05/08/2024 13:52

It's absolutely appalling that you're even having to consider this. I don't really know what else to say.

BMW6 · 05/08/2024 13:53

Wehadabetamax · 05/08/2024 13:42

There is a protest planned here in Plymouth this evening. Hopefully it will turn out to be a damp squib. I can't see there being any issues in Cornwall though.

Well hopefully so many people opposing them will show up so the potential for trouble is stopped in its tracks by sheer force of numbers.

I hope the decent people of Plymouth turn out.

Bromptotoo · 05/08/2024 13:54

With exception of Plymouth (which I know is over the river in Devon) there are no big cities in the area. I suppose you can't completely rule out trouble in the county's deprivation hotspots of which there are a few but I wouldn't even consider cancelling a holiday in the UK based on what's happened to date.

Obviously if all goes totally tonto with the army on the streets by Friday that might change but I think that's la la land stuff.

5tiletto · 05/08/2024 13:54

Personally, I would cancel.

We’re brown and felt quite uncomfortable in parts of Cornwall when we visited last year. Nothing was said but you do notice the looks from people as you do stand out in a predominantly white area.

user1492809438 · 05/08/2024 13:55

Cornwall addict here. If you drive a huge four by four demanding focaccia in the local One Stop you may receive some unfriendly stares, otherwise you'll be fine. As a white English woman I am desperately ashamed you even felt the need to ask and hope you and your family have a wonderful relaxing holiday.

BurnerName1 · 05/08/2024 13:56

Theredjellybean · 05/08/2024 13:14

I'm sorry you have even had these thoughts but honestly the far right extremists are not going to be rioting in genteel cornwall or I imagine some bucolic holiday cottages in the lake district.

This. Go and enjoy your holiday.

WASZPy · 05/08/2024 13:57

We're in Cornwall this week- just the usual middle-class Boden-brigade in evidence here.

Ontopofthesunset · 05/08/2024 13:57

As others have said, there's a 'protest' planned for Plymouth this evening but there are no big cities in Cornwall, so I'm sure you'll be fine. Horrible that you even have to think this though.

Thisismyusernamenow · 05/08/2024 13:58

No one has rioted in Cornwall since the Corn Laws were introduced. You’ll be fine. But I’m sorry you have to worry about this.
The Westcountry is racist, but not populated enough to host a riot.
