Cancel holiday to Cornwall due to riots?!

ShouldICancel · 05/08/2024 13:00

I've name changed for this as I feel quite silly even asking this! We're meant to be in Cornwall from this weekend for 7 nights and DH is saying we'll have to wait and see what happens with all the riots. For context, we're brown, but not Muslim (I say this because I know Muslims are being sadly targeted :( )

At first I thought DH is overly cautious (which he tends to be) and needs a reality check, but having said that, for the first time in almost 18 years I've felt a bit unsafe in the UK, so maybe I'm the one who needs a reality check.

While most of the news has focused on the riots in the north, I wanted to check with those in South (especially Cornwall) if you've seen any issues? Would it be safe to travel? My parents will also be joining us, but they will be travelling by train from Paddington. I'm hoping the train journey is safe. My parents don't live in the UK and are just visiting over the summer, so they do sometimes stand out more than me, DH and the kids.

TIA!

I'm brown (and a religious minority, though not Muslim) and live in Cornwall. I can report it's all safe down here albeit grey and wet.

I can't see that a load of rioters are going to Cornwall, they would have to travel miles down the A30 to get there.

. . . stuck behind caravans 😄

Vavazoom · 05/08/2024 14:13

I live in the rural touristy SW - I’ve seen the riots on television but it’s like another world. I’m pretty certain you will be absolutely fine in Cornwall.

Thisismyusernamenow · 05/08/2024 14:07

Plymouth used to have a well deserved bad reputation as a violent city. If you are concerned about riots then I would avoid Plymouth, but all the other Devon/Cornwall towns will be fine. Plymouth will probably be fine too, but is most likely to kick off.

Really? Ive lived here nigh on 40 years and its always been seen as a low crime city whats the well deserved repution?

SpidersAreShitheads · 05/08/2024 14:13

Hopefully you’re feeling reassured about visiting Cornwall OP.

It absolutely breaks my heart that this is even a question though. I listened to a Muslim man on the news last night - he was born here and so were his children. He is genuinely scared but he was born and bred here, where’s he going to “go”?!!! Just awful for him, I genuinely felt close to tears.

Any anger needs to be directed at the (now-departed) Tory government for failing to process asylum applications efficiently and for spunking money up the wall on the ridiculous Rwanda plan. The rhetoric used by Braverman et al, plus the usual venom from the Daily Mail, has created a xenophobic rage.

I love my country - these idiots don’t represent me, nor the majority of us. I’m so sorry you’ve even had to consider this OP.

WildFlowerBees · 05/08/2024 14:13

You'll be fine in St Ives, it'll be rammed though. You could start your own riot by putting cream then jam on your scone, have a lovely time!

PlantDoctor · 05/08/2024 14:14

We don't riot here. It's a city thing I think

Marseillaise · 05/08/2024 14:14

Oddly, we all need to hope for rain which will certainly dampen down rioters' enthusiasm

ThrillhouseVanHouten · 05/08/2024 14:15

We've got Hamilton tickets in Birmingham tomorrow and I'm debating whether to go - we're generic brown, enough to irritate these knuckle draggers.

The streets of Kendal are unlikely t be at the heart of a riot!

Oi! I'm from Kendal and someone pushed over a letterbox once!

I think it's the cities that are the only problems, not rural areas.

Mummyratbag · 05/08/2024 14:16

Really sorry you have to even consider this. I'm in Cornwall, it's mizzly, damp and quiet today. It didn't even occur to me that something like that would happen here (yes I need to check my privilege).. People get mad about dog poo not being picked up, people having bonfires and things like fireworks displays (without advanced warning). Bigger problems are second home ownership pricing locals out of the market, but even that outrage is usually contained within social media.

We turned red at the last election no Reform MPs down here. I think you will be fine.

I think a week of rain and the rioting will stop anyway.

Marseillaise · 05/08/2024 14:17

I saw a report of counter protestors in Bristol surrounding mosques and refugee centres to protect them. I hope it's true, as showing these idiots that ordinary decent people don't support them could be one of the best responses.

qotsa · 05/08/2024 14:17

BobnLen · 05/08/2024 13:18

Places more likely in the SW are probably Exeter and Torquay

Reports about something planned in Plymouth I've heard 😔 but nothing about Torquay/Torbay or Exeter.

Ted27 · 05/08/2024 14:18

@ShouldICancel

I'm white with a mixed race son. We visit Cornwall every year to stay with friends, who are a mixed race family who live in Helston
I wouldn't cancel, St Ives is just too far away for these thugs who are travelling round the country.
I do have to say however in response to everyone saying its all sweetness and light, my friend's son has been stopped in his local Tesco because he 'looked' like someone who had shoplifted earlier - the basis of this was his brown face.
Cornwall is not devoid of racism, but have never felt unsafe there.

Mt2gt1 · 05/08/2024 14:20

OP I am really sorry you and others who are feeling anxious and intimidated by these racist thugs and their riots.

I am so sick of all the apologists who keep excusing this behaviour. Poverty doesn't make people hold racist attitudes it's a choice. The very sad murder and stabbings of young girls is being used as an excuse for people like Tommy Robinson and Nigel Farage to peddle their poison stoked by social media. I also place a lot of the blame on the last Government. The Tories have always had a scape goat. In the John Major years it was single parents, later under David Cameron it was so called benefit scroungers and public sector workers. Teresa May and her hostile environment and treatment of the Windrush Generation. And latterly asylum seekers as part of their Brexit ideology. They have always othered groups to suit their rhetoric.

OP I hope you have a lovely break in Cornwall.

Ted27 · 05/08/2024 14:20

@Marseillaise

My friends son has been working in Bristol, he is politically active and was indeed involved in a counter protest in Bristol

Grmumpy · 05/08/2024 14:21

I live in outer London and absolutely no problem here. I would not expect a problem in Cornwall.

Marketplacevirgin · 05/08/2024 14:22

How awful that you are having to consider this, it's horrifying.

I've just got back from Cornwall and it was the usual (very) busy, summer atmosphere. All sorts of people on the beach and no tension that I was aware of. I hope you have a lovely holiday.

Tel12 · 05/08/2024 14:24

I get your caution but these riots are very localised. If it wasn't for the news you wouldn't know anything was happening in most of the country. I'm sure you will have a lovely holiday. Wish I could be there too!

Bet that made the front page!!

I think you'll be absolutely fine in Cornwall. Have a great holiday and forget about the absolute madness currently going on.

Anewuser · 05/08/2024 14:33

It’s so sad anyone has to think about riots affecting their holiday.

I saw Weymouth had them, we always enjoyed a summer day out there as children.

I'm in St Ives at the moment and I haven't heard of any riots here.
