Why are majority of the riots in northern towns?

1000 replies

PhoebeMcPeePee · 04/08/2024 12:13

DH & I were watching the riots on the news this morning like most people absolutely horrified.

He's from one of the northern towns affected although we live in the south and started discussing why these riots now (and historically) tend to be more focused on northern towns but didn't really come up with any one thing. Any thoughts on this?

The issue is lack of education and intelligence so easily stoked by whoever it is who wants to that. Blame the refufees and blame the Muslims.

Racist sympathisers based on what? Where have I condoned what is happening right now? I condoned your tarring everyone outside London with the same brush and making London out to be something it’s not.

Not attacking you personally, your responses make no sense.

Yours make no sense to me. Sorry!

AvrielFinch · 05/08/2024 00:58

It is not true that most British people going back a few generations are immigrants. Many people's families have lived in Britain for many many generations. Migrants over the centuries have tended to have sex with women in ports, London and some other large cities. But in many rural areas families just continued marrying other local families for generations and generations.
My DHs family have been traced back couple of hundred years. Hardly anyone has moved more than six miles from where DH grew up. They were all farmers and labourers and only in DHs generation did they move off the land and settle further afield.

Tatare · 05/08/2024 00:58

Ahh @Needspace2023 you are not that bright are you (despite your Southern designation).

Ok, as my dad always says, for the people at the back, POINTS;

  1. The people of the North are not inherently racist

  2. The current unrest is not possibly agitated by Northeners

  3. There is as much racism/anti racism in the North as the South

  4. Your brand of ridiculous thinking is one of the things that makes people in the North a little bit annoyed.

  5. I can't be arsed to get into a conversation about post-industrial Britain. We can if you fancy, but it's a long conversation.

Tis all!

I think that comment stems from a misunderstanding about what indigenous means. You’d be hard pressed to find anyone with truly indigenous heritage in Britain, most of us are native to Britain, but not indigenous. My family spans back generations in England, long long before even my grandparents were born-but my DNA ancestry shows I have Scandinavian, Finnish and North and West European heritage too. I’m only 62% English

I have one side that is English that can be traced back to the Tudor times but my on another side Scandinavian only last century but I don’t think Scandinavian side is Indigenous.

Goldenbear · 05/08/2024 00:41

Surely that depends who you are, there are many people in the south east, including London having a very, very high quality standard of living they certainly would wonder why you pity them!

But can’t you see that’s exactly the sort of posts we’re reading on here - pitying us as if we’re all living in squalor and misery. There’s many many people who live in the North who are very happy with their life’s and have a good standard of living. And definitely don’t need all the handwringing and patronising comments about how we must be wallowing in self pity up here, bitter and resenting people in the South. That’s just not a true reflection of who we are. The rioters you are seeing in the North - I’ve never seen that sort of behaviour here before this, or those kind of people. There’s obviously towns and cities where there are disenchanted people, but they don’t exist in all pockets of our community up here, just like I wouldn’t judge all Londoners on all the crime they appear to have there. These people exist everywhere, and are not exclusive to the North.

seriously your DH is from the North of England and couldn’t work that out? I’m not even from England or particularly interested/well versed in politics and I would have suggested the North / south divide. With the North having less wealth/ investment/opportunity.

AvrielFinch · 05/08/2024 01:05

@Livelovebehappy NOBODY has said everyone in the north is living in poverty and squalor. There are very posh nice areas.
But there areas with a lot of poverty that have been ignored.

You are incredibly smug aren't you. None of those things you listed are what I said but what you wanted to believe. And for what? What are you defending exactly? A bunch of racist yobs. Good for you!
You are incredibly defensive of your position that these men ( racist thugs) have genuine grievances. Sure they have grievances. And no I dont need a fucking history lesson about post industrial Britain or life under Thatcher or whatevr the fuck you think you know that I don't . It wasn't caused by refugees or Muslims.
I understand you have your opinions and possible bigotry but don't keep coming at me with waffle and defensiveness.
If you believe these men have grievances shower them with love and understanding or whatever it is you want.
I find them vile and they have no excuse.

What is it then? Just want England to be for English people?

Nope. It’s about halting immigration. Pausing it. There’s a misconception that anyone with concerns about immigration wants everyone who has immigrated here, be it first, second or third generation of immigrants, to be turfed out. That’s not the case. The country is in a mess. We need to resolve the issues re our infrastructure here, which is clearly not able to service the existing population. It’s that simple really. I would have preferred the halt on immigration a decade ago, but it’s done now. No ulterior motives about ethnic cleansing, just a reset.

MrsSkylerWhite · 05/08/2024 01:11

Understood, @Goldenbear

My mum spent a year tracing my family tree. I Go back to the early 1400s and Scottish nobility (sadly no more, the castle is long
gone 😂).
The laird sent his son to Jamaica where he, my 9 times great grandfather and plantation overseer, begat a son with a west African slave called Rosanna. We have no idea whether it was consensual or not but he freed his son, which suggests it may have been. That son was named Robert Wedderburn (another indication that his father acknowledged him). He later travelled to the UK, where his Scottish nobility family disowned him. He went on to become an ally of Wilberforce, published his writings (still available on Amazon!) and was imprisoned as an agitator.

I’m immensely proud of my ancestor.

The left behind communites in the North also voted for Boris Johnson.
You say you care about infrastructure and yet these people voted for the people who gave the least shit about them.

Superworm24 · 05/08/2024 01:17

"Ten local authorities are responsible for supporting more than one third of all asylum seekers in the UK (35.5%). Six of these – Manchester, Bolton, Rochdale, Nottingham, Leicester and Swansea – have a median annual income that places them in the poorest 25% of the country." From here https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2017/apr/09/its-a-shambles-data-shows-most-asylum-seekers-put-in-poorest-parts-of-britain

This is why, the article is from 2017 but its been an issue for a long time and still is. I'm from one of these places. There has been a massive influx of asylum seekers and migrants over years. At the same time we've had no investments made in public services. And I know it's similar for the whole country but I do understand why residents become resentful of those moving here when house prices have exploded and you can't get a doctors appointment etc. Some people coming here speak little English and it puts an even greater strain on resources.

And then there is the issue of integration. We have areas that are predominantly Muslim and people don't always mix. There's the language barrier and then the differences in culture. One of my school friends was never allowed round my house because her mum thought white girls were a bad influence.

Unfortunately I think that the current violence was inevitable. It's easy to dismiss those taking part as racist thugs but unfortunately they make up a significant part of our society. White, working class boys have the worst outcomes in education. And those in lower wages brackets are disproportionately affected by immigration of unskilled workers and budget cuts.

But they have. I’ve been following this thread most of today (sad I know, but laid up with a virus), and there has been so much said by posters that Northerners are uneducated, racist, not bright, Neanderthals, lost, chavs, poor, mostly on benefits, to name but a few comments thrown our way. I’m bringing balance to it by pointing out that we’re okay up here. We have our homegrown idiots, but so do most other areas of the UK.

You are a racist/ racist sympathiser.

C'mon.

This is a ridiculous conversation.

I'm neither a racist or a sympathiser.

I do think though, that when the less educated are rioting, it may be a good idea to listen why rather than standing on a hill and shouting 'Fool, Racist, Stupid'

We currently have a Labour government because so many people voted Reform. You'd be mad not to ignore that. Labour didn't win. The Conservatives lost.

Material ignorance doesn't actually make things not happen.

And just gobbing off about how racist everyone is isn't going to help. We are where we are. So let's work from there. Rather an imaginary fantasy.

allbymysel · 05/08/2024 01:21

I grew up in the 80's in a northern town. Segregated communities. Primarily white people and Asian people. Horrific racism to Asian people. Homophobia (a lot of aids scaremongering) misogyny, dv, minimising of rape/SA.

When I go back to that community (and surrounding areas) it's still there in an under current. One of the current rioting areas is a few miles from where I grew up.

Recently I had to explain to an elderly relative that white people can be terrorists too.

It wasn’t just the North who voted in Boris. Many in the South did too. And lets be honest here, he was up against Corbyn, so it was a bit of a no-brainer. Even the red wall areas in the North could see we would be going to hell in a handcart if we had voted in Corbyn. He was the worst leader Labour had ever put forward.
