Why are majority of the riots in northern towns?

1000 replies

PhoebeMcPeePee · 04/08/2024 12:13

DH & I were watching the riots on the news this morning like most people absolutely horrified.

He's from one of the northern towns affected although we live in the south and started discussing why these riots now (and historically) tend to be more focused on northern towns but didn't really come up with any one thing. Any thoughts on this?

Your answers: " they have grievances"
Get real. They are racist illiterate thugs and they've been allowed to get away with it for far too long. Media, government all are to blame.

Illiterate? No, that's another exaggeration, dont you mean 'not as literate as they ideally could be'?

@Anonym00se
Because property prices are higher in the south, on average council tax bands are higher. My house in London is band F but my dad's house (same size but in East Anglia) is band D because when the bands were set in 1991 my house would have been worth considerably more than his.
I pay annually £3300 and he pays £2200. That's £75pm difference.
Pay in London isn't always much higher. My DC both work in the NHS.
Band 5 central London £35964, edge of London £31469 and rest of England £29970. Housing renting and buying, is probably about 2-3 times more expensive in London but you don't earn twice as much.
Council Tax, hospitality, entertainment, car insurance are all more expensive too.
There definitely needs to be a great deal more investment in the deprived areas around the country. The 14 years of Tory austerity have caused an increasing divide. Levelling Up sadly was nearly all talk and no action.
Also the rhetoric from the Tories on immigration hasn't helped. Stop the Boats continually and Braverman's invasion talk had all added fuel.

You are totally wrong about Council Tax. If it were recalculated now, pretty much everyone in London would pay much more and most places outside would pay less.

The North has a disproportionate Council Tax burden overall.

Because I’ve lived it, and you described it as ‘quaint’ that was very very far from my experiences.

I thought I wrote that to demonstrate how they would think of it I.e very patronising, I don’t know anyone who wants to sound like they are from a privileged background anymore so when was this?

Tatare · 04/08/2024 23:41

I think @Needspace2023, you are from a small town in the SW of England (nothing againt the SW btw), you grew up in a fairly small-minded and parochial way, went to Leeds for University, had a culture-shock and then moved to London for work.

Subsequently think you know absolutely everything about the UK when you actually still live in your parochial town mentally, you've just transposed it to a bigger town.

wutheringkites · 04/08/2024 23:41

I don't think I've ever said this to anyone but @Needspace2023 you're coming across as completely deranged.

Needspace2023 · 04/08/2024 23:38

What has knife crime got to do with the riotting and racism???????????
I am sorry but many of you are in denial or bloody complicit.

Because you are making out London is this wonderful welcoming place where everyone gets along and nothing of this sort takes place and everywhere else is awful.

So my retort is, what about knife crime, it is highest in London yes? Young people suffer disproportionately from it in London yes? And what about poverty in London?

And also the 2011 riots which were the worst ever seen also started in London.

But this doesn’t fit your narrative about the rest of the country outside London.

Needspace2023 · 04/08/2024 23:45

Born and bred Londoner. Grew up in Shepherds Bush a working class and multicultural part of London.
How about you??? Who are you? I actually realy dpnt care.
Why so keen to know why Im so fucking pissed off about the state of this country and people on mumsnet going oooh they have grievances. Those poor Northern white English men have all the rigjts to take their shit out on Muslims and refugees?
Ok

Nah, I think she's from a leafy part of South West London.

Plenty of people in London live in a bubble and don't even really understand the city as a whole let alone what's going on outside the M25.

Her comments about London in the 90s are quite telling.

You literally said your thoughts of these ‘RP accents’ types as you describe them, mimicking others, including yourself, was quaint. I disagree that it is ‘quaint’ and think it’s elitist, snobby and classist.

I’ve only encountered it in a really hostile way. And had my intellect questioned alongside it.

My most recent experience was work related and was in March this year.

Nobody knows who you are replying to when you don’t quote or mention posters names, but I see it’s clear whoever you are replying to will get no reasoned debate from you.

I still await to hear your response to poverty and knife crime in London and the communities it affects, as you are saying these things only exist in the midlands or northern towns, but I suspect I’ll be waiting forever!

Plenty of leafy parts of SW London were very different 30/40 yrs ago…

Leeds University. 3 years of living there.
Have in laws who live in the Midlands.
Yes, both places are much more divided than London.
We were going on Anti Nazi League marches as teenagers in the 90s. White, black, brown people all together.
The rest of the country needs to as well.

The most racist place I have ever lived was in Stratford in the nineties. Horrific.

You don't need to care about me.

I grew up as an Upper Middle Class person in a Northern city. The Middle classes in my beautiful part of the city were highly multicultural. They mixed well, because, they could, they weren't fighting for resources.

The people in other parts of my city were, a bit, I understand why people from Northern cities who are stirred up by Southern agitators have been a bit pissed off, and people like you that pretend London is an enlightened wonderland actually fan flames. You're not interested in the reason why these things happen. Much easier to decry people as stupid, uneducated, Northern, illiterate than to actually try to understand grievance.

It's just not helpful to take your stance. Who do you think you are helping with your absolutism?

Yep, I'm aware of that.

But the posters throwaway, 'ah yes, there were some issues in East London' or something along those lines seemed a touch. I don't, out of touch.

My comments about London in the 90s? Why? There was BNP in East London who had won a seat and people from ALL OVER London showed up to marches against it. Was that 1993 or 4?
Sorry you weren't there.
Oh and my mum was a refugee so fuck off.

No I didn’t your just reading something you want to read to be offended in some way!

if someone has been openly aggressive about your accent in a work capacity surely that’s a HR referral? Of course it is not right who would think this is right.

Needspace2023 · 04/08/2024 23:57

Brockwell Park had a massive rally organized by the anti Nazi League. Because BNP won one seat.
Who tf are you to question events and evwn suggest I have no right to be fucking angry right now.

Say what now??

Hangingupnow · 04/08/2024 23:58

There were definitely race issues in London in the 90s.

wutheringkites · 04/08/2024 23:59

@Needspace2023

That's where I'm from. It was 2006. Odd that you were at the March but got the date wrong by 12 years. Yet, again you sound like you don't know what the fuck you're on about,

My parents were immigrants and suffered horrific racist abuse.

I think we all know that.

(Other than @Needspace2023).

AvrielFinch · 05/08/2024 00:00

And all this pretence that middle and upper class people are less racist than working class people. It is not true. MN is full of middle class people being racist. There is a lot of racism on this forum. And working class white people are way more likely to have close black and brown friends than other classes,

Well don’t extrapolate that to SW Londoners! A lot of us didn’t just move here from the Home Counties 😆

Agree, it’s more hidden though I think.
