Just wondered how common this is and could prove an interesting thread. Have you ever been away, especially abroad, and bumped into someone you know? We are away abroad at the moment, busy kids pool and it got me thinking wouldnt it be funny if someone from DCs school appeared in the pool. It's never happened to me for the record...

Crete. Bumped into 3 different families we knew in the hotel complex. Never happened anywhere else.

Rocksaltrita · 01/08/2024 22:17

As a child, York.

As an adult, Turkey.

I was just talking about this today with a friend.

I went to Australia as a child and we met up with a lady my Mum knew.

We also went on holiday to Spain and had a great time with a family and randomly met up with them London the following year.

This was in the days before social media.

LA-ish. Can't remember if it was Santa Monica or Venice beach but somewhere like that. Bumped into someone I used to work with and hadn't seen for years.

San Francisco. Saw someone from uni while on a streetcar - I was on it, he was on the street. We both attended uni on the other side of the US!

Not me but your post has just reminded me of a colleague who once went to Turkey and ended up sitting next to her ex and his new partner on the plane, they stayed in the same resort and then they sat on the row behind her on the flight back!

Gsyllama · 01/08/2024 22:20

Australia! Random petrol station on the road on the West Coast, the bus I was on pulled in behind a car and it just so happened to be my godparents (I knew vaguely they were on holiday in Australia, but it's quite a big place... ) I was 17 and wasn't with my parents on this trip so the chances of even recognising them were lower

Namechangejust · 01/08/2024 22:20

Cairns in Australia. Met someone who recognised my voice from school bus stop 😂

MorrisZapp · 01/08/2024 22:20

Our neighbours bumped into my primary school teacher at the top of the Eiffel Tower. This was in the seventies!

Mexico - sat by the pool and DC’s friend from school and their parents walked past! Kids had a blast playing together all week

FrangipaniBlue · 01/08/2024 22:22

Not someone I know, but went to Melbourne on a work trip, standing in a kebab shop at midnight and when I ordered the guy behind me said "I'd recognise that accent anywhere"...

Turned out he lived less than 10 miles from me back in Northern England 😂😂

Three in one holiday?! That's crazy!

Los Angeles. We bumped into someone that DH used to work with. We bumped into them again at Hollywood farmer's market.

They were staying with family in Vancouver and had flown down to LA for the weekend.

Pombearprincess · 01/08/2024 22:22

Cyprus

Mardyybum · 01/08/2024 22:23

Happened to us a few times, in Rhodes, one of the Canary Islands can’t remember which, and this summer we saw a couple we know in Cornwall and again at Gloucester Services on the way home!

gldd · 01/08/2024 22:23

This might be the furthest one yet. Uni at big city in the north of England. Later went travelling around the world between ages of 22 and 23. Completely randomly bumped into someone I knew from uni on Muri Beach on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. Hung out with him and some others for a fortnight or so and had a great time and haven't seen him again since (20 years)!

Wahine24 · 01/08/2024 22:23

LA airport met a friend by chance, on the way to NZ, where I met two old work mates and an old neighbour

Gorgonemilezola · 01/08/2024 22:23

Kuala Lumpur - former neighbours.

BritinDelco · 01/08/2024 22:23

India, an American I’d met on a European language course years earlier

Tregaronableist · 01/08/2024 22:23

Orlando, family from the same swimming club.
