Just wondered how common this is and could prove an interesting thread. Have you ever been away, especially abroad, and bumped into someone you know? We are away abroad at the moment, busy kids pool and it got me thinking wouldnt it be funny if someone from DCs school appeared in the pool. It's never happened to me for the record...

This kind of thing happens me all the time!

we once ran into my mums friend on holiday in New York - she did live there and my mum knew this - but hadn’t gotten in touch or anything (she hadn’t seen her in 20 years) walk into the pub on day 2 of the trip and there she is 🤣

I’ve ran into the same ex boyfriend in 2 different cities randomly - New York & Glasgow

sitting on the train in Vancouver I saw my neighbour

ran into a girl I went to college with on a tube escalator in London (she lives in Ireland)

we ended up renting a house in Orlando and friends of the family happened to rent one literally a few doors down at very similar dates to us 🤣

im sure there’s more 🙈

A friend from a UK uni, on the Columbia Icefields glacier in Alberta.

Toronto. I posted a picture taken from the hotel window of a parade on FB and an old colleague popped up and said ‘I’m in the building on the right of your photo watching the same parade’.
He had emigrated a few years earlier.

My Dad used to meet someone he knew wherever he went - southernmost tip of New Zealand he went into a backpackers bar and it was being run by a classmate from school.

Me: Andorra ski slopes - bumped into a lad who drank in the pub I worked in.

DH and me: Kenya. We ran a village shop and ended up on the same excursion as a pair of particularly irritating customers. Having said that, they were lovely that day "out of ccontext".

DH: top of Ayers Rock - he met a bloke he used to play basketball against.

Knew someone from some volunteering I did in Sydney, Australia. Randomly ran into her in a cafe in Blackheath, London!

Muffin101 · 02/08/2024 08:58

New Zealand. Walking through Queenstown on New Year’s Eve, bumped into a guy I knew from school. It took us both a second of looking at each other like ‘is that who I think it is or am I just drunk and he looks similar??’

LakelandDreams · 02/08/2024 09:00

Middle of nowhere in New Zealand! Met a work colleague.

We bumped into eldest DS's teacher in Brittany. DS wasn't delighted!

I bet the teacher was less delighted! 😁

SoSoller · 02/08/2024 12:21

We met two different work colleagues and their families of DH’s in Mallorca, and were even on the same flight home as one. It was unbelievable.
DH hadn’t known that any of them were going.

We got the ferry to France once, and I saw a few families that I recognised from the school gates.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 02/08/2024 13:03

@Tobermory Im sure you’re right!

Fifferfefferfeff · 02/08/2024 13:07

Tokyo; my cousin.

BobbyBiscuits · 02/08/2024 13:07

Only at a festival, quite a small niche one to be fair, and the person was clearly part of that 'scene' so it wasn't a huge surprise.
I've bumped into people that I met travelling at another point in my travels months later, but in the same country, or area. Ie Thailand/Cambodia/Laos. So that's just a backpacker trail I guess.
I've heard loads of people bumping into people on holiday though.

longdistanceclaraclara · 02/08/2024 13:12

Hawaii - it was very random. Have also been in the hotel as friends in kid and Ibiza with no prior discussion.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 02/08/2024 13:13

Sunny Beach years ago.

ringoutsolsticebells · 02/08/2024 13:16

Hoppinggreen · 02/08/2024 13:17

Barbados
Met a client on my 1st Day by the pool, not great when in my bikini.
To be fair we had a nice time with him and his wife but I always tried to keep good professional boundaries and had to chuck that out for the 2 weeks
