Just wondered how common this is and could prove an interesting thread. Have you ever been away, especially abroad, and bumped into someone you know? We are away abroad at the moment, busy kids pool and it got me thinking wouldnt it be funny if someone from DCs school appeared in the pool. It's never happened to me for the record...

Mazunte, a tiny beach resort in Oaxaca in Mexico. Bumped into my mate Jeri.
In Paros in Greece I bumped into my brother.

SweetChilliGirl · 02/08/2024 17:22

Queenstown, New Zealand. An old colleague who is been quite friendly with.

WatermelonSugarLow · 02/08/2024 19:52

This is so much more common than I thought. I thought if it had happened to some it might have been a one off but so many of you have had multiple bumping-intos. It's never happened to me! Maybe I'll take from this that I should travel more to increase my chances 😂

Bumped into the landlord of a pub in town in Corfu

MamaCasey2 · 02/08/2024 19:57

The Met museum in New York.

EffinMagicFairy · 02/08/2024 20:00

We met a family at a French campsite, didn’t keep in touch, couple of years later, same family were staying in our Orlando hotel.

The furthest most exotic location where we bumped into someone I know was in Vietnam near Hanoi, whilst on a cycling tour around a nearby island, stopping for a coffee break on little children sized plastic chairs and tables. That was surreal.

Scottishshortbread11877 · 02/08/2024 20:06

Bali

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/08/2024 20:09

Seattle (from London).

Scottishshortbread11877 · 02/08/2024 20:10

@Cattenberg surely he could identify the accent as it was the same as his?

MoorGirl · 02/08/2024 20:10

Laos - we went tubing, aged 22, and bumped into a primary school friend!

grywknd · 02/08/2024 20:15

Darwin, Australia. Bumped into one of dh’s colleagues.

AnnieMcFanny · 02/08/2024 20:16

All the way from my home in Asia to London Zoo only to meet my daughters friend and her family leaving the Zoo as we were entering.

Met a lovely American couple on a Caribbean Cruise then met them again on a Mediterranean Cruise 2 years later.

Went to my son’s graduation in Bristol and stayed in a certain hotel that a half brother I had no knowledge of checked into the day we checked out. When he tracked me down on the internet 2 years later he was so like our father (and me) that if I’d seen him in the hotel that day I’d have approached him and said you’re the image of my father etc etc.

Disney in Florida. But we’re Scottish, and anyone who’s taking their kids to Disney in the summer does it in the first two weeks of the holidays before England and Wales break up, so that’s not unusual.

I never have, but my fucking mother bumps into someone she knows everywhere she goes. EVERYWHERE.

Supermarket in Spain? Yep, Sue from her old job. Beach in Greece? Aye, Nancy the woman who used to do the carpets. Seafood restaurant in New Orleans? Oh yes that's Anthony the postman from when I was a little girl, do I not remember him? And, I shit thee nay, a small guinea pig and alpaca farm in rural Peru. John who she went to school with.

It's like her superpower.

My DH is the same. Maddening.

izzy2076 · 02/08/2024 20:23

Bumped into an 'old flame' at the airport in Dhaka 20 years ago. He was the only other European in the airport so it was very weird!

FortyFacedFuckers · 02/08/2024 20:24

In the pool in Mexico and some strange guy walks up behind my DH and starts tapping him on the shoulder turns out he was a friend from when my DH was 5 until my DH moved away age 30!

coxesorangepippin · 02/08/2024 20:30

Pompeii

Mate saw her ex's mum and dad too, in the same hotel

😂

Psychoticbreak · 02/08/2024 20:37

Australia. On a bus over there some years back and randomly bumped into a girl I had briefly worked with in Ireland (we are both from Dublin) on it.

Katherineryan1986 · 02/08/2024 20:39

My parents went to Australia and chatted to a couple also from the UK. Turned out to be from the next village along from my parents home.

CharismaticMegafauna · 02/08/2024 20:47

Not very exciting compared to some of these but we saw the school secretary at a beach in Devon (we live about 200 miles away).

Some parents I know from school went to Minorca and met some of their children's school friends in the pool.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 02/08/2024 20:47

Perth Australia. University friend from northern England. Bumped into each other in a night club.

loudbatperson · 02/08/2024 20:51

Not holiday but on a work trip in Seattle. Bumped into an old classmate I hadn't seen in over 15 years. They were living there. Very random coincidence.

LBOCS2 · 02/08/2024 20:54

In the last year I have bumped into:

An ex (from 20 years ago) at a festival

Ex work colleague plus partner and kids at Disneyland Paris (I also found out that my ex-boyfriend-from-the-time's old housemate from uni was also there with his family at the same time as us but we didn't see them)

Not one but two old colleagues of mine staying at the same hotel as us in Lanzarote. One we saw as we were checking in, one we saw randomly walking around the resort.

It's clearly been a year for it!

zebrapig · 02/08/2024 20:56

When the was a child we bumped into my friend and her grandma in the airport on the way home from holiday (Majorca I think).
Last year we met DS's classmate in the airport security queue on the way out DD's classmate in Cancun airport on the way back from Mexico. They were 2 rows in front of us on the plane. This year we bumped into 2 families from school in Fuerteventura airport while we were waiting to fly home.
