Just wondered how common this is and could prove an interesting thread. Have you ever been away, especially abroad, and bumped into someone you know? We are away abroad at the moment, busy kids pool and it got me thinking wouldnt it be funny if someone from DCs school appeared in the pool. It's never happened to me for the record...

Walking along a random beach in India...and walking towards me was my builder 😂

The Grand Canyon - I saw someone I'd been in a youth group with as a teenager (we'd have been in our early 20s at this point).

Madeira - bumped into a neighbour of my aunt who I knew a bit.

This week - we are in Ireland and I was walking down the street and saw a old colleague I haven't seen for 15 years. He lives here but is originally from a European country so even more strange!

New York, I was going up an escalator in Macy's when one of the directors from work was going down.
We just about had time to say "ooh, what are you doing here?" as we passed.

We didn’t actually know the guy who helped us out 2 weeks ago on Vancouver Island. Got chatting and he was born at the same hospital that my children were in the UK . He had been in Vancouver for 25 years .

Having just walked out of Venice Marco Polo Airport to the bus stop, who should I see in the bus queue but my ex boss, who had pretty much forced me to resign a year or two earlier. Great. We both looked embarrassed and pretended not to see each other.

Also, this is not quite the same, but I met a nice backpacker about my own age in Santiago Airport in Chile. We exchanged pleasantries but didn’t discuss our travel plans. A few days later, we bumped into each other more than 2,000 miles away on Easter Island!

Happened to us a few times, in Rhodes, one of the Canary Islands can’t remember which, and this summer we saw a couple we know in Cornwall and again at Gloucester Services on the way home!

I mean Gloucester services is very nice 😛 I think 90% of Cornwall visitors probably stop there for a leg stretch and a nice bite to eat 😂

Greece, but the weirdest part was it was a girl I went to primary school with that has exactly the same name as me!

Linnet · 01/08/2024 22:25

Florida, I met my Dr and her family.
Canada, my husband met a family he knew through his work.

olympicsrock · 01/08/2024 22:25

Thailand . An old university friend who was living in India at the time was staying in our hotel. We had been eating in the restaurant and were sitting at the bar when she walked in and sat down at the same table we had just left.

This might be the furthest one yet. Uni at big city in the north of England. Later went travelling around the world between ages of 22 and 23. Completely randomly bumped into someone I knew from uni on Muri Beach on Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. Hung out with him and some others for a fortnight or so and had a great time and haven't seen him again since (20 years)!

Great memories made by the sounds of it! One of those meant to be moments in life 🙂

I hope they were meant to be working on your house whilst you were away were they?! 🤣

Barbados. One of my husbands customers… he asked us how a window cleaner could afford a holiday in Barbados ….

FrogNToad · 01/08/2024 22:27

We bumped into my husband's colleague in a bar in Las Vegas.

I also got talking to an English chap in Prague who lived there but was born in my tiny home town.

Chasingsquirrels · 01/08/2024 22:28

Couple of weeks ago, travelling back from safari in South Africa with my 18yo. Lad on the plane who'd been in the year above him at our small (4 class) primary school.

crumpet · 01/08/2024 22:29

Twice over. Found someone from my hometown in the UK at school in Hong Kong, Then we bumped into each other at the same university back in the uk.

SockQueen · 01/08/2024 22:29

Eswatini (Swaziland at the time). I was doing my elective there (med student) in a fairly rural hospital. Had gone to the capital one weekend to go to the markets, and bumped into another girl from uni - she was doing her elective in Johannesburg and had come to visit Eswatini for a weekend!

Also, honeymoon in Zanzibar - met one of DH's work colleagues in the pool.

I never have, but my fucking mother bumps into someone she knows everywhere she goes. EVERYWHERE.

Supermarket in Spain? Yep, Sue from her old job. Beach in Greece? Aye, Nancy the woman who used to do the carpets. Seafood restaurant in New Orleans? Oh yes that's Anthony the postman from when I was a little girl, do I not remember him? And, I shit thee nay, a small guinea pig and alpaca farm in rural Peru. John who she went to school with.

It's like her superpower.

KnittedCardi · 01/08/2024 22:32

An old teacher on the top of the Junfraujoch in Switzerland.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 01/08/2024 22:32

We bumped into eldest DS's teacher in Brittany. DS wasn't delighted!
