Bloody weather

I'm an unapologetic heat hater. Up till last couple of weeks I was quite happy. I was told off on one thread for not being miserable and claiming it had been a "lovely summer so far". But it had to me, bit wet, a few dry days, some with sunny spell but regular cloud cover and nothing over about 21. Lovely.

Now we are on holiday in a beautiful part of the New Forest and it's roasting. 29 degrees, full sun and we can't even get out to the forest to walk after about 9.30 because it's dangerous for the dog. We went yesterday for about half an hour after 4.30 in full shade the whole time and that felt like too much for her. All the lovely walks we had planned have had to be cancelled. We're spending way more time hanging about the accommodation than we would if it was raining.

I know the forecast can't be trusted but the 10 day one as soon as it was available was saying consistently 22ish and lots of cloud cover which would have been great.

Meant to break and rain tomorrow. Fingers crossed it does and we get the last two days of our week back.

I'm with you. Hate the heat and bright sunshine.
Everyone at work is jetting off on holiday to 40° heat while I'm uncomfortable here.
I don't go anywhere July/August just in case, we holiday May or September.
We were promised rain tomorrow, now it's looking unlikely.
Crossing fingers for better weather for you.

HansHolbein · 31/07/2024 15:18

Agreed. It’s disgusting.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 31/07/2024 15:22

Well it is the end of July/ August , so it's not unreasonable to expect hot weather . Yes it's rubbish for the dog , but don't plan a holiday in the middle of our summer and then complain it's too hot to do anything. I bet it won't be 29 degrees every day either.

YabaJaba · 31/07/2024 15:23

Miserable lot. We get such few warm sunny days, enjoy it! ☀️

We are doing our best to enjoy our holiday mostly stuck inside apart from very short bursts because otherwise it could kill the dog, thanks!

The boardgames have been well used. It is a nice week. But it is not the holiday we planned given the weather. Which is a shame. And annoying.

We drove for half an hour to try and find somewhere we could park and immediately get into covered forest. Even there it was roasting. Full shade the whole way and at a gentle stroll I was feeling far too hot so I'm sure it was too hot for her.

I saw an advert in Facebook about safe temperatures for dogs just a couple of days ago and it terrified me. The shaded woodland yesterday felt no cooler than any other small patch of shade. Definitely not cool enough for me not to worry.

I love the heat, but I get you. I'm lucky enough to live in the New Forest, and you do have to go out early with the dog to avoid the heat - if not, she's stuck indoors until evening. It's difficult if you're on hols with your dog - you can't take them with you, and you don't want to stay inside with them. At least we have beaches!

RicherThanYews · 31/07/2024 15:33

Yep this weather is hell. I have hyperhydrosis among many other conditions and all are aggravated by heat. I've had 2 showers today and 3 changes of clothes because the sweat was actually pouring off me and seeped through my clothes. Trying to do anything in this weather results in me panic buying Kleenex to mop my eyes (eyes and sweat do not mix) and forehead, which gets tissue all over my face. I endure cruel comments from friends and strangers. Face like a troll anyway and can't wear makeup to look halfway human because I'd look like a melted crayon. I don't say a dicky bird through any other weather so I reserve the right to suffer and be miserable in 29 degrees.

Take the dog down to the coast or up to the Itchen/Test Valley for a swim!

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 31/07/2024 15:34

If you have a dog that means you can't go out in hot weather, why would you book a holiday at the end of July/start of august? I know it's not always roasting, but it's not completely unexpected that it might be hot.

Any ideas for specific areas gratefully received. We live by the coast at home and she won't go in the sea but she'd probably get in a river. Tomorrow is looking nicer so we were thinking of heading to Bucklers Hard and along the river there

I didn't expect it to be this hot. I don't ever expect England to be this hot. And you have to take a chance on some things. Plus you know, bring tied to school holidays is a fairly chunky factor.

You're in the New Forest, plenty of shady walks - really you need to make the most of it.

GasPanic · 31/07/2024 15:42

I mean the weather is not usually hot this summer. It normally gets up to these sorts of temperatures and even higher at some point.

Glad to have a bit of sun after the miserable never ending rain and cold. People on here were putting on their heating on in June a few weeks ago.

YabaJaba · 31/07/2024 15:43

The walk from BH to Beaulieu is shady

Droolylabradors · 31/07/2024 15:44

@DappledThings have PMed you some info.

It might get hot in the summer shocker.

RampantIvy · 31/07/2024 15:47

While I love the heat I totally get your concerns about the dog. At least you are a responsible dog owner.

Maybe consider the lake district or Scotland for next year?

SirChenjins · 31/07/2024 15:51

We go to the south of England if we want hotter temperatures and we usually get them. If you want cooler temperatures come north to Scotland and you’ll get them here. It’s 22 degrees here in Edinburgh and it’s lovely - after months and months of rain and cool/cold weather I’ll happily embrace the early 20s. I’d be happy with it being warmer too. Don’t worry OP, this lovely weather won’t last and you can get back to normal.

Mondaysocial · 31/07/2024 15:51

You are my soul sister. This is exactly how I feel. Instead of a block holiday this year I am picking a couple of days each week off, I am booking at the last minute to catch the cooler dry, but sun and cloud days : ). Stayed at work during this heatwave as it’s too hot for me to do anything outside anyway. The heat just drains my energy.
