Bloody weather

I'm an unapologetic heat hater. Up till last couple of weeks I was quite happy. I was told off on one thread for not being miserable and claiming it had been a "lovely summer so far". But it had to me, bit wet, a few dry days, some with sunny spell but regular cloud cover and nothing over about 21. Lovely.

Now we are on holiday in a beautiful part of the New Forest and it's roasting. 29 degrees, full sun and we can't even get out to the forest to walk after about 9.30 because it's dangerous for the dog. We went yesterday for about half an hour after 4.30 in full shade the whole time and that felt like too much for her. All the lovely walks we had planned have had to be cancelled. We're spending way more time hanging about the accommodation than we would if it was raining.

I know the forecast can't be trusted but the 10 day one as soon as it was available was saying consistently 22ish and lots of cloud cover which would have been great.

Meant to break and rain tomorrow. Fingers crossed it does and we get the last two days of our week back.

OP, you don't seem to understand what "average" temperature means.

OP, you don't seem to understand what "average" temperature means.

I really do. I'm just pissed off that I landed my holiday on the week it's significantly above average and it's impacted my holiday. When it was just as likely to have been a lovely 22 with plenty of intermittent cloud cover.

It's unlucky. Last week was nice, next week looks nice. This week was unpleasant. And unexpectedly hot.

This! ^ Bloody mood hoovers. Hmm

Probably the same ones who were whining about it being sooooooooo COLD a few months back, having to turn their heating on, and wishing for some nice weather 'so the kids can go out and play' and so they can get out for walks and day trips. You just KNOW it's the same moany feckers who hated the cold, and whinged about all the RAIN. Ya know, the ones who can moan for England, and are never happy! Wink

IT'S JULY! It's SUMMER. ☀ NEWSFLASH!!! It's probably going to be hot! Get a grip FFS! Hmm Go for a walk, sunbathe, go for a swim, go to the beach, do ANYTHING - but stop bloody moaning.

Do you actually realise how utterly pathetic you sound complaining about 'heat' and 'the sun' in JULY?! Give your head a wobble!

Many people have health conditions which are made considerably worse by hot weather ( and cold). I’m one of them with hot weather.

SirChenjins · 31/07/2024 23:11

@DappledThings We’ve done the drive south for the warmer weather lots of times and it’s fine - just think of it like holidaying abroad including the drive to the airport, getting through security, the flight, getting out of the airport and then your drive or transfer to your accommodation. All worth it for the weather you want and the beautiful scenery.

maddiemookins16mum · 01/08/2024 06:37

It’s not the weather, it’s the dog.

TeenToTwenties · 01/08/2024 07:32

Hey @DappledThings it has just rained in Romsey so hopefully you will be happier with the weather today!

RampantIvy · 01/08/2024 07:41

Wet here today as well - typical Yorkshire Day weather.

WildFlowerBees · 01/08/2024 07:41

Who are these people saying why would you book a holiday in July/Aug?! It's not a given it'll be hotter than Hades every year. It's either cold and pissing down or scorching. Just a nice 21 for a while would be good.

It's meant to get cooler soon op, the only guarantee we have is that it doesn't last for a very long time in the UK. My cats have their own fan, it's miserable for animals.

There's cooling mats for dogs if that might help going forward.

I hope you manage to get some cooler days and time to enjoy yourselves.

DappledThings · 31/07/2024 15:31

We drove for half an hour to try and find somewhere we could park and immediately get into covered forest. Even there it was roasting. Full shade the whole way and at a gentle stroll I was feeling far too hot so I'm sure it was too hot for her.

I saw an advert in Facebook about safe temperatures for dogs just a couple of days ago and it terrified me. The shaded woodland yesterday felt no cooler than any other small patch of shade. Definitely not cool enough for me not to worry.

I don’t understand this, we have dogs in hot countries you do realise that? Regular 38 degree days plus high humidity and dogs are fine.

It’s cooler here in this part of the UK - it’s not everywhere in the UK that’s in the late 20s. I hope it lasts for a long time, but it won’t sadly.

Crunchymum · 01/08/2024 08:00

Had 3 nice days (23c, sunny) on SE coast but now back to rain / sunshine / showers.

So glad we've been out of London this week though.

It definitely feels fresher so far and forecast has come down by 3 degrees so fingers crossed! Made it cooler in the morning and everyone slept much better

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/08/2024 08:46

Unless you do something fucking dumb like leave your dog locked in a car with no water, your dog is not going to die if it reaches 29 degrees. You do realise there are dogs in countries where it reaches 30 degrees or more pretty much every day in summer yes?

The problem with some people in the UK is they make zero effort to adjust their lifestyles or behaviour for any weather than deviates from "mild drizzle" and then moan like bastards about it.

@HeySummerWhereAreYou this is so rude and nasty.

Other people are allowed to have different likes and dislikes to you. This doesn't make them "pathetic".

Well done OP for being a responsible dog owner. I hate seeing people out with their dogs in the heat.

DrCoconut · 01/08/2024 09:18

It's lashing down again here. Looks like our planned seaside holiday next week could be less than due to rain and low temperatures for the beach. Swap you!

We aren't a million miles away from you and last night was the hottest by far for us. But since it rained at 7.30 the air is so much fresher.

Hope you have a really great day op😊

Leaving a dog locked in a car WITH water in these temperatures is also fucking dumb. It should NEVER be done.

What we DON'T have is the infrastructure to cope with heat. Our houses get hot, and there's no way to cool them down. Going outside doesn't help if the sun is blazing down. Many of us don't work in air-conditioned offices/shops etc, so going to work is no respite either. We lie in 30 degree bedrooms that won't cool down even overnight, sleeping naked under thin sheets, except we're not sleeping because IT'S TOO FUCKING HOT. And then we're exhausted, and the next day of oppressive heat is too much to bear.

Do you really think that people in other countries don't have to deal with the same conditions? Houses get hot where I live, we struggle to sleep at night - and we have more hot days than the UK does. I have never in real life heard as much moaning about heat as there is on MN.

Well, to be fair, that was just a guess. It would make sense that houses are built in the most climate-appropriate way... with a focus on things like insulation and effective heating in colder countries, and ventilation/shutters/fans etc in warmer countries. A PP mentions living in Germany where their house had, for example, exterior shutters to keep the sun out.

For me personally, being able to cope with cold weather very easily but becoming literally unable to function in the heat, I would definitely install air conditioning in our house if I could afford it. Our heating system is rubbish but I don't really care. You can manage being cold in other ways.

I suspect there's an element of acclimatisation here as well - you might have more potentially hot sleepless nights than me, but if it's a regular occurrence you might cope with it better? It's very rare to get properly hot weather where I live (north west England) so, when it does happen, it feels like a real shock to the system.

But yeah, I accept I'm moaning. I thought that was allowed on MN, in fact it is a favourite pastime for many MNetters. 😉

While we do get more hot weather, and for longer, than the UK, no it is not a regular occurence in the sense that all of summer is like that. And no, our houses are not built in the most climate appropriate way. We freeze in winter and roast in summer. Although air con is becoming more common there are still a lot of people without it, and I use mine on fan more than on the cool cycle - and it's only in the living room so no use at all at night. It's winter here at the moment and I couldn't get warm today until around 4 pm.

RampantIvy · 01/08/2024 12:03

You can manage being cold in other ways.

I think what heat haters just don't understand that those of us who feel the cold can't "just put another jumper on" to warm up.

When we are chilled to the bone one of the best ways to get warm is to increase the ambient temperature. For me the absolute best way is a hot bath, but I can't do that at work. Sitting under arctic aircon in winter is unpleasant for me. In summer I wear a cardigan in the office.

henlake7 · 01/08/2024 13:12

Im all for abit of sunshine but I agree it does get unpleasant when it gets above the mid twenties.

There is a reason for that....the humidity. Most of the time it is not only hot but sticky, clammy, oppressive heat that feels uncomfortable.
Its why you can go to a country with temps in the mid thirties and it doesnt feel as bad as here at a lower temp.

Its not just locals who notice either. I work with colleagues from all over the world and many from much hotter countries....they still complain about the heat here in the summer!

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 01/08/2024 13:37

Am I missing something? We've had a very warm few days, but nothing over 30 degrees and nothing I would class as unusual for summer. I don't fully understand the tone of some posts, as if these are shockingly high temperatures. It's surely just a (fairly minor) summer heatwave. I understand some people struggle in the heat (I am a fat, sweaty person, myself) but I am confused by the semi-hysterical note to some posts.

RampantIvy · 01/08/2024 13:45

Well said @PigglyWigglyOhYeah
If this thread had been started 2 years ago when the mercury was topping 35+ degrees I would understand it.
