Bloody weather

I'm an unapologetic heat hater. Up till last couple of weeks I was quite happy. I was told off on one thread for not being miserable and claiming it had been a "lovely summer so far". But it had to me, bit wet, a few dry days, some with sunny spell but regular cloud cover and nothing over about 21. Lovely.

Now we are on holiday in a beautiful part of the New Forest and it's roasting. 29 degrees, full sun and we can't even get out to the forest to walk after about 9.30 because it's dangerous for the dog. We went yesterday for about half an hour after 4.30 in full shade the whole time and that felt like too much for her. All the lovely walks we had planned have had to be cancelled. We're spending way more time hanging about the accommodation than we would if it was raining.

I know the forecast can't be trusted but the 10 day one as soon as it was available was saying consistently 22ish and lots of cloud cover which would have been great.

Meant to break and rain tomorrow. Fingers crossed it does and we get the last two days of our week back.

In the words of Blackadder II: "You might recognise this sweating mound of blubber here". That's me.

Give me a lovely, bright Autumn day anytime.

Am I missing something? We've had a very warm few days, but nothing over 30 degrees and nothing I would class as unusual for summer. I don't fully understand the tone of some posts, as if these are shockingly high temperatures. It's surely just a (fairly minor) summer heatwave. I understand some people struggle in the heat (I am a fat, sweaty person, myself) but I am confused by the semi-hysterical note to some posts.

Most people have the memory of a goldfish as far as weather is concerned.

If its hotter than last week then it is supposedly "very very hot".

I mean when I think of extreme weather events I think of summer 2022 which was brutally and record breakingly hot. That was very very hot. I think of December 2010 which was seriously cold. The coldest December in 100 years. I mean that was cold.

Short of something like a major volcanic event, we are always going to see temperatures of 25C+ in Southern England on multiple days per year and in multiple places. It's a long way off how hot it can actually get (approx. 40C).

RampantIvy · 01/08/2024 14:14

I remember it well. We back on to a railway line and had no trains for 5 days, which was practically unheard of.

I'm not shocked, I'm just annoyed that the unusually high temperatures this week, and they are unusual because they only come for a few days each year if at all, happen to have fallen on the worst week for me

It's a very comfortable and pleasantly warm 23 degrees where I am today.
Warm enough for a dress and sandals but not too hot to do anything.

Well yes but there will be a lot of families on UK holidays whom are thankful it's not raining so their kids can enjoy the beach and sea.

Some you win some you lose.

Depends what you are doing. I went for a run this morning and weight training this afternoon and I was sweating like a pig!
Also probably not much fun if you have an active job, esp if you have to wear heavy protective clothing.

The majority of people don’t have to wear heavy protective clothing though - and exercising can/should be done outwith the warmer parts of the day.

It was in the early twenties here today too and it’s been lovely.

PlumpHobbit · 01/08/2024 16:29

Thought we'd get storms today, nope just more awful muggy humid heat. No breeze or anything.

marshmallowfinder · 01/08/2024 16:52

It's been utterly awful and extremely humid in Wales. I feel very unwell with it. I can't even face making dinner or washing up, or even going for a shower. Fucking, fucking heat.

DancelikeFredAstaire · 01/08/2024 17:04

What is it that those of us who complain about the cold/rain get told on here....oh yes..."no such thing as bad weather you're just wearing the wrong clothes" , or the other one "embrace it OP and don't be so miserable". Maybe get a fan and drink ice-cold drinks (us summer lovers equivalent to "snuggle under a blanket with a mug of hot chocolate").

Why wouldn't you do something more gentle if it was too hot?

I am so sick of these ridiculous threads. First we had a raft of 'It's too cold, too windy, too frosty. I have got my heating on coz it's soooooooooo cold' whinges.

Now people are griping because the temperature is in the high 20s in MID SUMMER!
I suspect they were different people. I've never complained about it being too cold or too rainy. I have often complained about it being too hot. And I assume vice versa for others.

>25 is very, very hot for England.

It's really not. It's hot yes but it's not very very hot. Have you forgotten that two years ago we had 2-3 days where the temperature hit 39-40 degrees in several places?

25 is perfectly normal.

JohnTheRevelator · 01/08/2024 18:01

Agree. I'm so sorry your holiday has been spoilt by the weather. This heat over the last week is wearing me down, but I'm made to feel like a miserable kill joy because I don't enjoy sweltering in 32 degrees heat. I've got nothing against nice weather,as in sunshine and a temperature of around 21/22 degrees, but I just can't cope with this. It's starting to make me feel ill.

RampantIvy · 01/08/2024 19:14

Where has it been 32 degrees?

Mistymountain · 01/08/2024 19:33

I'm just out of hospital, after major surgery, this heat really isn't helping my recovery! I feel bad hating it because people like to have nice weather for the school holidays.

Got the fan, ice cold drinks, but still can't cool down, or keep my pets cool enough. Constant fan and drinks not possible at work either.

Rainbowsponge · 01/08/2024 23:37

No such thing as the wrong weather OP just the wrong clothing. Do you have a 100% cotton kaftan, wide brimmed hat, ice packs and a handheld fan? You can also buy heat protecting shoes for the dog and a hat for him/her.

Cold water bottle and cold damp cloth on the back of your neck will help.

Your pets will be fine, animals survive perfectly well in hotter temperatures than parts of the UK have had for a few days.

Yes and we'll have people saying it was a hot summer when no, it was shit until 10 days ago. Long may it continue I say! ☀️

BottomlessBrunch · 02/08/2024 08:04

So interesting how we're all different - does it go back to our dna and what part of the world we originate from?

I have been absolutely loving the heat and it's only confirmed to me that in the future I would like to emigrate/retire abroad where I can feel heat the vast majority of the year round.

I'm already dreading the winter but having these sunny beautiful days at least makes it easier to think about. My sister couldn't be more opposite and despises the heat. Everyone's different I can understand why people don't like it but my mood this week has lifted so much and I'm feeling extra good as I just randomly booked this week off work 3 weeks ago and can't believe how good it's been. You can do so many free things in the outdoors to enjoy this beautiful country when the weather is reliable.

RampantIvy · 02/08/2024 08:16

I originate from London and love the heat. Currently living in a part of South Yorkshire where it rains a lot, so hot weather is a rarity to be enjoyed when we get it.
