Bloody weather

I'm an unapologetic heat hater. Up till last couple of weeks I was quite happy. I was told off on one thread for not being miserable and claiming it had been a "lovely summer so far". But it had to me, bit wet, a few dry days, some with sunny spell but regular cloud cover and nothing over about 21. Lovely.

Now we are on holiday in a beautiful part of the New Forest and it's roasting. 29 degrees, full sun and we can't even get out to the forest to walk after about 9.30 because it's dangerous for the dog. We went yesterday for about half an hour after 4.30 in full shade the whole time and that felt like too much for her. All the lovely walks we had planned have had to be cancelled. We're spending way more time hanging about the accommodation than we would if it was raining.

I know the forecast can't be trusted but the 10 day one as soon as it was available was saying consistently 22ish and lots of cloud cover which would have been great.

Meant to break and rain tomorrow. Fingers crossed it does and we get the last two days of our week back.

Nasty post - those of us who don't like, or struggle with, the heat are unlikely to want to go for a walk in it, sunbathe or go to a beach and roast and cook themselves, because that is exactly what you would be doing! 20 degrees is plenty warm enough for anyone surely? Bring back the overcast skies and precious, life giving rain of earlier this month, rather than blazing sun, elevated temperatures and stifling airlessness we are currently enduring. And, for those of us who have to work outside, alll day, with no shade, in manual, physical occupations, it is hell on earth - plus the land is in need of a good soaking with the accompanying sweet smell of petrichor

The land has been waterlogged for months, it’s been the opposite of life giving, and farmers have been struggling - this warm weather means they can catch up.

It might get hot in the summer shocker.

29 degrees is above average though; low 20s are what it is supposed to be!

tillyandmilly · 31/07/2024 16:23

I was happy with 21 degrees - now being 29 I have been having constant heat migraines together with the fact I can’t sleep as too hot even with a fan - I am in a top floor flat - roll on cooler temperatures!

Me too!! Not a flat, but three-storey townhouse with bedrooms on the top floor, where it gets up to 32 degrees. Not pleasant!!

WickWood · 31/07/2024 17:51

I'm hating it too! I don't do well in heat at the best of times but currently 31 weeks pregnant 😓

marshmallowfinder · 31/07/2024 18:01

It's loathsome and extremely debilitating. I can't cope with heat.

RampantIvy · 31/07/2024 18:10

No, please don't bring back the rain and the waterlogged fields. I live in a rural community surrounded by farms. It has been a dreadful year for farmers. Be careful what you wish for. Food prices will escalate.

We need precious life giving sun as well as rain for the plants to grow and ripen.

Barleycat · 31/07/2024 18:15

You're being ridiculous. You're in a shady forest.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 31/07/2024 18:30

'Precious, life giving rain'

Ha! The fields near us have only just dried out! What a load of crap. We have been cut off by flooding about five times since January and it didn't seem to stop raining for about 9 months.

I hate the heat, but have been so cold and wet this year that for the first time ever I am bloody loving being a sweaty fat mess.

Cantwaitforautumn · 31/07/2024 18:31

Hideous isn't it. Roll on September!!

ssd · 31/07/2024 18:35

I hate the sun and it hates me.

BlibBlabBlob · 31/07/2024 16:37

Another heat-hater here. The issue with heat, as opposed to any other 'bad' weather, is that in the UK we are just not set up to cope with it.

If it rains, stay inside or wear a raincoat or use an umbrella or whatever.

If it's cold, stick on a big jumper and get under a blanket or thick duvet or (if going outside) put on a massive coat, scarf, gloves, hat etc. And/or turn on the heating: most of us are lucky enough to live in houses with at least vaguely functional heating systems.

What we DON'T have is the infrastructure to cope with heat. Our houses get hot, and there's no way to cool them down. Going outside doesn't help if the sun is blazing down. Many of us don't work in air-conditioned offices/shops etc, so going to work is no respite either. We lie in 30 degree bedrooms that won't cool down even overnight, sleeping naked under thin sheets, except we're not sleeping because IT'S TOO FUCKING HOT. And then we're exhausted, and the next day of oppressive heat is too much to bear.

Yes, some of us like the heat. Some of us don't easily overheat. But the rest of us - including the perimenopausal, the overweight, those on meds that make them heat sensitive... well it just becomes unbearable very easily.

If all of our houses and workplaces had basic air conditioning systems, in the same way that all of our houses have at least basic heating systems, summer would be much less difficult and far more enjoyable!

Oh, and somewhere to exercise dogs without them overheating would be great... indoor air-conditioned dog parks, maybe? Because when you're already massively struggling to cope and already getting bugger all decent sleep, having to take an energetic young dog out at 06:00 and 23:00 is an absolute killer. You can do a gentle doggy walk at 08:00 and 20:00, but if your dog needs to RUN then you have to basically do it at night. 🤣 Not that there's much night, because it's still light outside at bedtime and gets light long before you want to be awake!

Roll on autumn, and winter... I honestly prefer cold, rain, wind and darkness over the current weather. I think I need to move to the northernmost part of Scotland (although then the short nights and never-ending daylight would be even worse... sigh.)

Yes, this!! I'm no lover of any extreme weather (heat or cold!), but I was trying to work out why I find the heat so unbearable.. And it is because there's no escape from it.

As you say, you can put on (more!) layers outside or the heating inside in the cold. At night, a duvet and maybe a blanket is all you need to combat it. But we don't (generally) have air-conditioning in our houses and they are built to keep in heat so there's absolutely no respite from it.

And yes, the blooming endless daylight... I've been awake in the early hours several times recently with my DD8 who has ASD and cannot cope with the heat and 10 to 4 in the morning is not daytime so why is it light and why are the birds awake Grrrr 😅

I'm stealing this line! Perfectly sums it up for me!

garlictwist · 31/07/2024 18:53

I'm loving the heat. Went on a fab walk this afternoon through dry corn fields. Usually it's a bog. At 20 degrees I've got a coat on. Sadly that's what's returning at the weekend so got to make the most of it.

PlumpHobbit · 31/07/2024 19:22

I'm another heat hater, hate sweating just existing, not being able to sleep, cooking yesterday was revolting

I thought it was supposed to cool down tomorrow and thunder. Nope 27, again 🤬

I much preferred the dull dreary weather

I'm due to clean the house but can't face it in this hellish heat

It's so draining, and its making me grumpy

the80sweregreat · 31/07/2024 20:18

Sun / hot weather hater here too
Can't wait for it to disappear ( soon I hope )

Exactly this. What a silly post. 'Bring back the precious, life-giving rain!' 🙄 The 'life giving rain' has caused immeasurable damage to millions of peoples homes and livelihoods. We NEEDED 'precious' life-giving sun!' AND DRY WEATHER!!!

After about 9 months of constant Autumn and Winter and then Autumn again, and a ludicrous amount of non-stop rain (WAY more than we should have had!) we finally have summer, and people are crowing and whining because it's a COLOSSAL 27-28 degrees C in JULY. OMG how will we cope?! Shock

Some people need to get a serious grip. 'I want overcast days, and clouds and rain.' Pathetic. It's summer FGS! Hmm

I am so sick of these ridiculous threads. First we had a raft of 'It's too cold, too windy, too frosty. I have got my heating on coz it's soooooooooo cold' whinges.

Now people are griping because the temperature is in the high 20s in MID SUMMER!

Go move to Iceland or Svalbard if you're that bothered.

I tend to find September is the worst for being sunny all the time!!! :( there is just no respite at the moment.

and THANK YOU every mumsnetter on here who is making me feel better as I thought I was the only one who couldn’t handle heat. It’s really debilitating

I suspect they were different people. I've never complained about it being too cold or too rainy. I have often complained about it being too hot. And I assume vice versa for others.

Hot yes, not very, very hot, and not that unusual.

User364837 · 31/07/2024 21:05

I’m not far from you on the south coast and I thought it felt a little fresher today than yesterday and tomorrow looks slightly cooler again so I hope that’s the case for you and you can be more comfortable. Yesterday was extremely hot

User364837 · 31/07/2024 21:06

We are on a uk beach holiday and can’t believe our luck after last year in the same place at the same time with driving rain and wind!
but this weather isn’t fun imo unless you’re by a pool or beach

EasternStandard · 31/07/2024 21:07

I love it but the garden grass is getting a bit dry

I'll have to look up stats on it. >25 is always a surprise to me and it's the kind of heatwave I only expect for a few days a year. Maybe my sense is put of whack though, or it's a case of hope over experience.

OP posts:

Sorry but high twenties are normal Summer temperatures. I don't have a dog, friends do, and I can imagine it is difficult.

But I honestly love it, I am peri-menopause, overweight and do struggle but the weeks in May and June with just rain really got me. I love the late afternoons to sit in the garden and just relax.

I think you may need to re-think where to go if you want to take your dog.

My biggest issue is that I have to decide between warm at home from lunch time onwards or facing commuting into Central London. Despite thick curtains, airing the house at 6.30am and fans, it's just not fun. I grew up in Germany, outside blinds and proper insulation means decent temperatures inside.

This really.

My guess is there is hardly ever a year where it doesn't get over 25C in most places in England. Certainly for the CET.

30C is getting closer.

35C+, that is what I would call very very hot, bearing in mind the record is 40C+.

I think people just take the current temperature and then moan about it being hot. It seems to drop every year. My guess is in 10 years time we'll be moaning about 20C heatwaves.
