Friend very angry that I’m on Mounjaro

My friend is tall and willowy, never has to watch what she eats. She prides herself on being slim and the ability wear whatever she likes (tight catsuits, very short skirts etc).
Im the opposite. Short and dumpy, size 18. Desperately needing to turn the hunger button off I’ve resorted to ordering Mounjaro after a lot of reading around the subject.
Friend has hit the roof! Says that it’s cheating and a quick fix and it won’t stay off. That I should eat healthier and exercise more and that’s why I’m fat. Yes, it probably is but I don’t have her genetics either. Says she thinks it’s disgusting that people are using this quick fix etc. On and on. I’m a bit shocked and sad to be honest.
I don’t want to think Ill of her but I wonder if she’s actually worried I’ll be slim myself one day so she won’t be the slim one of the two. Anyone else had this? Don’t know what to do going forward!

I’m only a doctor but ok what do I know🤷🏼‍♀️. I wouldn’t do it myself

So what do you advise patients to do who want to lose weight? Especially since it’s now recognised that long term weight loss isn’t achievable for the majority of people?

And are you one of the many doctors that don’t investigate symptoms in fat people, instead telling them to lose weight first? (I’m not assuming you are - but if not, you’re one of the minority).

Fat people literally cannot win.

Gettingbysomehow · 31/07/2024 21:48

Cheating? How absurd. Your body your choice. A friend of mine lost 10 stone through non "cheating" dieting and has since put it all back on.
Your body your choice. Nobody elses business.

I think you are very silly to order drugs via the internet. Hopefully, you won't have any serious adverse reactions and I doubt it will be a miracle fix. It is daft that your friend is having such a visceral response however, it would be good if you could have a deep dive into your relationship with food; we all need to eat and unless you're eating deep fried Mars bars accompanied by pints of Guinness you don't have to answer to anyone.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 01/08/2024 07:42

@IhateHPSDeaneCnt

There are many reputable company's prescribing on the internet. I get mine form
Asda pharmacy. Boots also do it as long as many other.

I dont think op has gone to a dealer.

It’s not the Dark Web! online pharmacies are highly regulated. They are pretty essential these days given the state of our high streets.

I've been on it since early March and had to provide photos etc so that's not right.

And in that time you've used all of the providers? Or do you mean that just your provider has asked for photos

Clearly you haven't read the threads on here and Reddit where people talk about being on it with Pharmacy2U and others where reordering in July is the first time they've had to submit photos

I've been with three suppliers and had to do a comprehensive assessment and provide photos (shopped around to get the best price) including providing evidence of previous prescription.

I've been part of the chats since early March, shortly after its release.

I don't doubt people are accessing it who aren't suitable for it. In the same way people access all myriad of prescription medications not suitable for them. But that's not what OPs thread is about....

I cannot advocate enough for the life changing medication that has now been made mainstream available, and how much hope it brings to me personally to see obesity taken seriously as a medical condition with viable treatment options.

Oldfatandfrumpy · 01/08/2024 19:25

Oh you don't have to convince me of the benefit of Mounjaro, I'm on it myself. It was just the definitive 'this is wrong' about me pointing out that some suppliers had only recently started asking for photos that I was challenging.

I fully support the loopholes being closed so inappropriate people can't take it (for their safety more than anything), hope that the people it can truly benefit continue to be able to access it, and REALLY hope that it becomes more 'socially acceptable' so people like OP don't get these horrible reactions from people that supposedly care about them

I hope you've read about the dodgy injections people have been sent online and sold from salons recently. People have almost died.

The issue is we are fat so therefore stupid/ lazy/ greedy so we must be PUNISHED. The thought that a medication ( which we pay for ourselves) might help us enrages many people.
Plus if too many fat people lose weight then who will they have left to look down on?

It really does feel like this sometimes, doesn't it?

NikNak321 · 03/08/2024 07:09

I am wondering what she actually said. If my friend told me she was using a Diabetic medication to alter her bodies chemistry rather than diet and exercise I would have some very strong opinions on the subject. Which would have absolutely nothing to do with size and jealousy and a lot to do with love and concerns about safety.

To be clear I have been a size 10 until the last 10 years where I have rocketed to a size 20. This has been through poor diet, lack of exercise and birthing and rearing two kids. I have struggled to loose weight...but know I can safely and healthily when I graft. I struggled with weight as a teen and found the means to keep it off watching my diet and moving A LOT for a long time to maintain being slim. I am in the process of sorting that now, but with still a long way to go. I would never resort to a medication.

My best friend is struggling accessing Diabetes medication due to this fad. A lot of these injections are being given by beauticians without medical training, with no knowledge of your medical background and without doing the necessary medical check ups etc. Diabetic medication can cause death when used incorrectly without the necessary training and monitoring. Me...I'd rather get my act together and go to the gym. I suspect this is what your friend was really getting at 👍

WonderingWanda · 03/08/2024 07:19

She is ridiculous. By her logic we shouldn't use any shortcuts in life....I very much hope she never cheats and wears make up, or gets her hair dyed, or uses things like a washing machine etc. Why would she not just want you to be happy. Clearly not a good friend.

3CustardCreams · 31/07/2024 04:47

Disagree with everyone here. Yes I get that being overweight is not good for mental health but taking unnecessary medication is just risking your health for vanity. If you insist on going down the drugs route - I would at least ask for something like Merformin which has been extensively safety tested before jumping to Mounjaro. However this is not medical advice - just to demonstrate that this is quite extreme action to take.

WOW @3CustardCreams

I am so grateful that you are not my doctor!!!

My doctor did observe me putting on weight, slowly, over 15 years. She did mention it when I came in for check ups (which was not regularly, I would generally only go to the doctors once every couple of years for a check up), listen to me, advise me and then when I eventually decided (of my own free will) that I needed support to manage my weight, she proposed several options together which I then discussed with my family. She listened to my concerns, and my DH's.

When my weight loss plateaued, or I became disheartened (which does happen!) she encouraged me to keep going.

She then recommended me to an endocrinologist, and this endocrinologist gave me a thorough check up, sent me to a dietician, and from there we started the weight loss jabs.

From me asking for support, to getting the injections, took 10 months.

Granted, I am not in the UK, but here you cannot get them without a prescription, (which I do agree with) and thankfully for me, my health insurance does cover them. The approach to health is focused on preventative here rather than treatment.

I can't imagine, if after all that soul searching and feeling very low, a doctor didn't see the real me and told me it was all about vanity.

I hope you've read about the dodgy injections people have been sent online and sold from salons recently. People have almost died.

That’s why you don’t buy from random salons or get it from your mates.

You use a registered pharmacy.

Dinkydo12 · 03/08/2024 07:35

Basically she should be supporting you. Sounds like she wants to keep the status quo. She must feel good about herself by comparing herself to you. Ignore her and do what suits you. Good luck eith the weight loss.

Griff1963 · 03/08/2024 08:00

Fuck her!!

AJPGreen · 03/08/2024 08:02

All bodies are beautiful but also remember that your body is not an ornament. Sounds like you need to spend less energy trying to be thin and more energy deconstructing your fatphobia. Following some fat liberationists or body positivity accounts on social media would be a good start. You can already wear what you want :)

Mounjaro doesn’t just help with willpower. It is being shown to have an effect at reversing insulin resistance (improves insulin sensitivity) over time.

It’s like some people think that overweight people never try exercise and watching what they eat to lose weight. It helps your body chemistry.

I didn’t begrudge my friend when he took medication to stop smoking after many years of failed attempts. I was proud of him for tackling a problem. I never thought for a moment the stop smoking meds were cheating.

Weight is so bound up with “moral failing” for being greedy. People get really weird about it. Especially when you’ve been “the fat one”.

This
its sad there’s a lot of misunderstanding about it.

for many people it’s correcting hormones/body chemistry which is off balance and led to weight gain or inability to lose weight in the first place

Hahahaha
fat liberationists are cultists and no not all bodies are beautiful, that's ridiculous. If all bodies are beautiful then beauty as a concept means nothing.

User364837 · 03/08/2024 08:10

People are also conflating news stories about idiots buying illegal drugs from beauty salons or individuals without prescription and putting themselves at extreme risk vs buying the medication privately from a mainstream pharmacy with a private prescription.

it is scary that it’s open to abuse and people lying about their BMI to get it (has to be 30 or above and most places ask for pictures on the scales etc). But hopefully that can be cracked down on whilst enabling people who need it to get it.

its also not a quick fix for most people, after some people have an initial good loss it seems to be 1-2lb a week for many.

Edited

You clearly know absolutely nothing about Mounjaro.

  • it's not a diabetes medication
  • it's not administered by anybody apart from the user, never in 'salons'
  • It doesn't cause death

Your capacity to lose weight as a teenager is unrelated to your capacity to lose weight as an adult, possibly perimenopausal, definitely postpartum. Good luck with your 'grafting' and fair play for not wanting to take medication but I can't understand for the life of me why you are so disdainful towards people who do.

daffodilandtulip · 03/08/2024 08:13

I lost 4 stone years ago after I had my babies. My sister had always been the skinny one and my mum told me I had to stop losing weight as it was making my sister feel bad.

Years later and I'm losing weight again. My closest friend is cheering me on and we swap tips and weigh ins throughout the week.

You don't need this friend.

5431go · 03/08/2024 08:19

Of course it’s genetics…. My working cocker is much leaner than my show cocker despite having the same lifestyle. It’s the same for humans!

Don’t be ridiculous.

Show cockers and working cockers have different builds. Which is genetics.

The working cocker will burn more energy on a day to day basis. Things that you don’t notice. They will move around more. Things people don’t notice. Like moving round in the house. This will create a difference in their caloric needs.

It’s the same in people. People who are ‘naturally slim’ tend to move around more. They may not do more exercise but they move round more and, on average will eat the calories they need. Not in excess.

Cockers and other breed that are prone to weigh gain are prone to weight gain because they tend to eat anything given. An overweight dog is always over weight because they eat more than they burn.

If you wanted the shower cocker to lose weight you would decrease their food. If you wanted the working cocker to increase their weight you would increase their food.
