Friend very angry that I’m on Mounjaro

Sawingwood · 30/07/2024 16:47

My friend is tall and willowy, never has to watch what she eats. She prides herself on being slim and the ability wear whatever she likes (tight catsuits, very short skirts etc).
Im the opposite. Short and dumpy, size 18. Desperately needing to turn the hunger button off I’ve resorted to ordering Mounjaro after a lot of reading around the subject.
Friend has hit the roof! Says that it’s cheating and a quick fix and it won’t stay off. That I should eat healthier and exercise more and that’s why I’m fat. Yes, it probably is but I don’t have her genetics either. Says she thinks it’s disgusting that people are using this quick fix etc. On and on. I’m a bit shocked and sad to be honest.
I don’t want to think Ill of her but I wonder if she’s actually worried I’ll be slim myself one day so she won’t be the slim one of the two. Anyone else had this? Don’t know what to do going forward!

You can only buy the drug from a registered pharmacy and you have to have a bmi of 30 to do so which is actually classed as obese. Most online pharmacies ask for some sort of ID as well as a short video/photo of scales with said starting weight.

A lot of them have only recently started asking for photos etc

3CustardCreams · 31/07/2024 04:22

Or it might be that she is genuinely concerned for your health. These medications don’t come without side effects and arnt a quick fix.
The safest way is always going to be healthy diet and exercise. I wouldn’t be so quick to accuse her of not wanting you to be skinny.

Whatever they tell themselves to make themselves feel less of a judgemental arsehole, most people aren't genuinely concerned about someone's health, they just like judging fat people and feeling superior.

If they were genuinely concerned about their friend's health they'd be delighted that they were getting help to reduce their weight (which is far worse for their health)

Coconutter24 · 31/07/2024 14:13

PeriIsKickingMyButt · 31/07/2024 07:15

If you didn't make food changes you wouldn't lose weight. What do you think these injections do?
Also where are you seeing people do this? On social media? In your mind? I assume you are a doctor or weight loss professional specialist to have intimate knowledge of who is using these drugs and what changes they are or aren't making??

Edited

In my mind? Really. You’re not actually far wrong with my profession although I’m also guna ‘assume’ you just said that to prove a point of me not being in that field but you assumed wrong. I also have 2 clients who are currently using this as a weight loss aid (not given by me), they have made food changes and have lost an ideal amount of weight for them in the last 6 weeks

Coconutter24 · 31/07/2024 14:18

zaffa · 31/07/2024 07:50

@Coconutter24 but it is neither your time nor money, so again, why does it bother you? And FWIW they won't lose any weight if they put in no effort, if you don't exercise and maintain a healthy diet you won't lose any weight.
All it does is make that achievable for people who, due to genetics and other medical conditions, struggle significantly to do so.

Already said it doesn’t concern me so why are you asking again why it bothers me? It’s obviously unintentionally touched a nerve as you are so bothered by what others think

Everyone is so quick to call the skinny friend jealous, when in actual fact it's pretty obvious OP is the jealous one here.

She tries to belittle her friend by saying she's naturally/genetically thin, then in the next breath describes a healthy diet with small portions.

OP you seem to think that by losing weight you'll all of a sudden be far more attractive than your friend and that says a lot about you.

Nonsense

opalescented · 30/07/2024 18:40

Why on earth did you tell her about your medication? That's weird.

Do you think so ? It's the kind of discussion I would have with my friends.

Am quite interested that people are saying here that it's a 'miracle drug'. Surely there are some side effects? That's what would worry me.

SilenceInside · 31/07/2024 15:14

@ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea of course there are reported side effects of these drugs, as with all medicines. It's up to each individual to balance the risk of any possible side effects with the benefits of losing weight. If you are obese then the benefits outweigh the possible risks, clearly. Mounjaro and Wegovy have been approved for weight loss by the MHRA in the UK and have been around for longer as a treatment for diabetes.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 31/07/2024 15:22

I'm still eating far less. It's not an easy instant fix

I'm on 1200 Cals a day max. The difference is I'm not starving all the time or thinking about my next meal. That makes it easier to stick too. But I can't eat huge takeaways or choc or crisps and expect to use. It doesn't burn calories.

Lampzade · 31/07/2024 16:00

ObsidianTree · 31/07/2024 12:33

This. And their believe that 'ozempic face' is a real thing that only occurs if you have taken weight loss drugs!

That is just enough way of trying to put people off taking the drug.
I am slim, but if I ever became overweight and needed extra help to lose weight, I would take
weight loss injections.

PeriIsKickingMyButt · 31/07/2024 05:57

Going from obese to overweight or healthy weight isn't motivated by vanity. Obesity has a myriad of health risks that when balanced against the potential health risks of Mounjaro may be considered worth the risk. Metformin doesn't have the same weight loss effects. It's really none of your business anyway whether people choose to take a medication that has been approved for weight loss and taking an approved medication that has passed the testing phase is hardly 'extreme'.

I’m only a doctor but ok what do I know🤷🏼‍♀️. I wouldn’t do it myself

Oh right you're a doctor therefore you have fully evaluated the health risks of both long term obesity and medium term use of injectable weight loss drugs, you've done a wide scale analysis of the evidence and can conclusively state that the risks of these drugs is greater than the risks of long term obesity? Or are you a GP who has as much information on these drugs as the rest of us?
Obesity is a health hazard, a serious one. How TF is a doctor of all people telling people with obesity that using a weight loss drug to become not obese is about vanity??

Lj8893 · 31/07/2024 16:30

I’m really concerned that a doctor is saying somebody trying to lose weight when obese is about vanity.

SlashBeef · 31/07/2024 16:40

Oh this would spur me on to absolutely smash it and have the body of an (admittedly still well fed) Victoria's Secret model by Crimbo.

Tend to agree, I don't think either of you like each other and are both very appearance focussed.

Are you one of the drs who also thought the covid vaccine was full of poison and made people magnetic. Being a dr isn't the gotcha moment you think it is their are a lot of drs out there that are giving vulnerable people dangerous information based on their personal opinion rather then based on scientific fact. Being obese is incredibly dangerous and anyone wanting to lose weight should be supported in doing that in whatever way works for the individual.

People on here make me laugh. People are so quick to say the risks of the medications but seem to forget the more dangerous risks of being obese. I'm currently doing a vlcd and the amount of people who like to bring up the risk of gallstones but don't bring up the risks of obesity, heart attack, stroke, cancer ect. Everything in life is a risk its about balancing the risk

This is so so important.

When I had WSL suggested to me by my GP he was going through all the benefits and why it was superior to other weight loss methods (not perfect, nothing is foolproof and you have to use your tool in the right way) but how the outcomes can be very positive and what long term obesity would mean for my future

I then had a consultation with the surgeon that di the op in the end and he had sent me information about different choices and procedures but also the impacts and life long effects of the surgery and impacts and life long effects of obesity.

It wasnt a hard decision to make!

People/this society really minimise the risks of obesity, its like is just about being 'fat' and not fitting into nice clothes. Its actually dangerous.

Well said and well done on making the decision to improve your health.

I was on it around 4 years ago, from different suppliers (trying to find the best price each time) and needed to supply photos.

Blackcats7 · 31/07/2024 19:39

The issue is we are fat so therefore stupid/ lazy/ greedy so we must be PUNISHED. The thought that a medication ( which we pay for ourselves) might help us enrages many people.
Plus if too many fat people lose weight then who will they have left to look down on?

Starseeking · 31/07/2024 19:50

Sounds like she enjoys you being the "fat friend". As you lose the weight, I'd fade her out too.

Oldfatandfrumpy · 31/07/2024 21:27

And in that time you've used all of the providers? Or do you mean that just your provider has asked for photos

Clearly you haven't read the threads on here and Reddit where people talk about being on it with Pharmacy2U and others where reordering in July is the first time they've had to submit photos
