Friend very angry that I’m on Mounjaro

Sawingwood · 30/07/2024 16:47

My friend is tall and willowy, never has to watch what she eats. She prides herself on being slim and the ability wear whatever she likes (tight catsuits, very short skirts etc).
Im the opposite. Short and dumpy, size 18. Desperately needing to turn the hunger button off I’ve resorted to ordering Mounjaro after a lot of reading around the subject.
Friend has hit the roof! Says that it’s cheating and a quick fix and it won’t stay off. That I should eat healthier and exercise more and that’s why I’m fat. Yes, it probably is but I don’t have her genetics either. Says she thinks it’s disgusting that people are using this quick fix etc. On and on. I’m a bit shocked and sad to be honest.
I don’t want to think Ill of her but I wonder if she’s actually worried I’ll be slim myself one day so she won’t be the slim one of the two. Anyone else had this? Don’t know what to do going forward!

She sounds pathetic. She's probably one of those people who sees being slim as a huge achievement and a part of her identity that she's hugely proud of. She clearly isn't bothered about your health. Just worried you'll be slim like her and she won't get to feel superior. She needs to get a life.

Well I’m glad you know what I’m eating. 🙄

I am very particular about my calories in and calories out, some may say obsessive. I know how many calories I consume and what macros I consume.

Losing weight is much more difficult for some people and gaining weight is much easier for some people. Surely you understand this?

It not about knowing. It’s about it being factual if you move a lot and are obese you are burning more than 1500cals a day. if you are obese on average you are eating more than 1500 calories.

PCOS makes it difficult because it create cravings and make lethargic.

It doesn’t create fat from nothing. It doesn’t make the body keep fat on if the calories aren’t being put in.

I am not lethargic or have cravings. PCOS has many symptoms and not everyone has all of them.

I am insulin resistant which makes my body hold onto weight and makes it very difficult to loose it. As I said before I lose weight very slowly if I eat less than 1000 calories a day which funnily enough does make me lethargic and is not fun.

Mickey79 · 30/07/2024 18:36

Shocking behaviour from a so called friend. That may well be her opinion, but she should value your friendship enough to keep her mouth shut and not say such negative things.

You do realise
Slim = works really hard at not eating shit
and
Fat = eats shit

isn’t actually the be all and end all of weight.
I am obese, morbidly so, could I eat better? Yes.
Could I move more? Yes.

Do I eat significantly better and move significantly more than my normal weighted friend? Yes.

Dont be so bloody obtuse.

That’s you being obtuse I’m afraid.

Jeez, that's a bit of an over reaction. I was talking specifically about food noise not whatever your situation or your friends situation might be.

opalescented · 30/07/2024 18:40

Why on earth did you tell her about your medication? That's weird.

Got your attention didn’t it.

you were talking about how she might be sensitive to food noise etc.

I just wanted to point out how those of us who struggle significantly with our weight can be extremely sensitive to comments about it and judgements made on what we must consume.

LindorDoubleChoc · 30/07/2024 18:45

I'm really really surprised that your friend would take this position. I'd say it's quite unbelievable!

LeedsZebra90 · 30/07/2024 18:46

In contrast to a lot of the above, if she is someone who doesn't need to worry about her weight and never has she likely wont know anything about this so it is possible she is just shocked/concerned about what it is and how it works. In all honestly, I have only ever heard of it from mumsnet. I live a pretty active lifestyle and am slim and it is just never something that has crossed my radar - so if one of my friends mentioned it and I would be concerned by the idea of a weight loss injection on the face of it without having any knowledge.

Cerialkiller · 30/07/2024 18:49

Hangingupnow · 30/07/2024 16:55

Is it genetics though? I can imagine if someone watches what they eat like a hawk or exercises all the time they may feel annoyed. I eat a lot and the people who normally comment on it where the ones who were very restrictive.

When it's studied using identical twins (considered one of the highest standards for studies) they find that weight is about 70% down to genetics. That a biiggg disadvantage to overcome especially if you got several of those genes, plus comorbidities plus health problems that prevent you from exercising or that limit your diet choices or drugs that wreck your hormones and metabolism.

This is a very fair point.
a friend of mine was shocked to hear about people going to Turkey for bariatric surgery, she had no idea how popular it was becoming and couldn’t understand why.
It was not any judgement on her part, she just has no experience or understanding of weight struggles and why someone would feel that was a more than suitable option for them.

It does sound in this case like it was judgement from the OPs friend though rather than a concern of her health.

OlympicsFanGirl · 30/07/2024 18:52

Tell her to get to fuck.

You are doing the right thing for your health

Well yeah, you really did demonstrate that some people are hypersensitive alright so job done I suppose.

My point that slim people can struggle too so may be jealous when someone cam get a shot to take away that food noise went woosh over your head though in your rush to demonstrate how sensitive you are.

PunchyLunchy · 30/07/2024 19:00

@opalescented why is that strange? Don’t you talk to your friends about things happening in your life?

Tomorroisalwaysanewday · 30/07/2024 19:01

OP I’d be doubting if this was a true friend who had your best interests at heart.

im on a weight loss injection and I’ve had nothing but encouragement and support from friends as they know how unhappy I was , and how worried I was about my health.

i hope you have success on Mounjaro and wish you well.

Even with insulin resistance you would lose weight if you move a lot and are morbidly obese and only eat 1500 cals. You body can’t create calories to store as fat. Insulin resistance is thought to promote fat storage. But it can’t create fat if the excess calories aren’t there.

which was my point ‘I eat better’ means absolutely nothing when it comes to fat loss. You can eat better and still be eating in excess. The difference between you and your friend is simply that she eats a similar amount of calories to what she burns. You (and I) don’t. We eat more.

The point of the post you replied was completely missed.

Lavenderflower · 30/07/2024 19:08

I don't understand why she would be angry with you - it none of her business. A few people I know are on weightless medication and some have had weigh loss surgery. I did have some concerns from a health perspective, but did not voice that and was supportive.

lorien9 · 30/07/2024 19:11

It's "cheating" 😆. Well I hope your friend doesn't cheat by using a car when she should be walking, or turning on the central heating when she should be rubbing two sticks together.

letsjustdothis · 30/07/2024 19:12

Maybe it's worry coming across as anger. One of the side effects is cancer. And so little is actually known about the long term effects of these as they're so new. I'm sceptical that they're really all they're cracked up to be.

Size 18 isn't massive, even if you're not tall. It would be worth a shot to try losing weight, the fact you think it's genetics suggests there's an awful lot you need to learn about weightloss and nutrition so you might find it easier to lose weight than you think once you have the correct info.

You have explained better now Thankyou, I apologise I misunderstood.

Essentially we are saying the same thing…that PCOS (and other Co-morbidities) can have a negative effect on our metabolism, fat storage etc etc.

So I (and you) need to eat a lot less and move a lot more than somebody without a similar disorder.

As I say, it’s alot more complex than calories in vs calories out.

If we all ate and moved exactly the same we wouldn’t all be the same weight and body shape.

Scorchio84 · 30/07/2024 19:12

Hattie48 · 30/07/2024 17:01

I had a few “friends” who were very disappointed when I lost weight. One called me haggard (I really wasn’t!) and one said I looked worryingly vulnerable (I had gone for a size 16 to 10) so not exactly wasted away.

What?? Fucing hell man

@Sawingwood like others have said let her huff herself off for a while but personally I wouldnt like someone in my life that catty & unsupportive. Weight is such a personal issue so you need people who are understanding of your struggles. Ive never been on Mountjara but from a previous thread I know its a VLCD & has quite significant results, best of luck with your weightloss

Why should they be annoyed in particular?

HaveYouSeenRain · 30/07/2024 19:16

You don’t need to tell your “friend” everything. She is worried you will be skinny soon

BlastedPimples · 30/07/2024 19:34

I just wouldn't tell your friend anything personal anymore.

I suspect she likes being the only thin one.
