The US government failing to treat African-American men with syphillis in the 1930s (while pretending to treat them) so that they could study the progress of the illness- treated as a conspiracy theory, but it was true.

Then infected blood scandal and post office scandal- early whistle blowers were treated as conspiracy theorists.

Not very jolly examples.

I think Covid probably came from a lab.

I think Covid probably came from a lab.

So do I, and I never understood why, during lockdown, so many people denied this could possibly be the case.

For a long time the idea that the Hillsborough deaths were due to police negligence rather than drunk lairy football fans was a conspiracy theory.

What’s this?

It’s where if you have an opinion that they don’t agree with, they deliberately tweak your account so you get no views, your posts disappear off the feeds, no one can follow you, and if someone searches for you, you don’t come up.

But you are not officially banned, your account is still active. As far as you know no one cares what you say.

FayeGreener · 24/07/2024 23:27

I think my favourite conspiracy theory that turned out to be true is that the CIA secretly paid the Dalai Lama millions of dollars back in the sixties as part of a plot to destabilise the Chinese government.

AShortName · 24/07/2024 23:40

The Covid vaccine is linked to heart problems.

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 24/07/2024 23:42

Robert Lustig and sugar.

Covid might have been created in a lab, a deliberate leak is going too far though.

I wouldn't be surprised if the CIA killed Kennedy, if only because they're the only ones who could keep it covered up for so long.

Not exactly "current", but the official line maintained by both the US and UK governments is that Abdelbaset al-Megrahi is, and was, solely responsible for the bombing of Pan-Am flight 103, which is so implausible that it's completely ridiculous.

It's not really a "conspiracy theory" as much as it is a blatant attempt on the part of both governments to obfuscate the truth for the sake of expediency. Even many of the victim's families are furious that their governments insist it's a closed book and continue to maintain this outright lie.

There's a fairly recent podcast by film director Rob reiner about the jfk assassination. Listening to all the evidence and testimonies, you can help but come to the conclusion that the CIA were involved and Oswald was a scapegoat

The theory was always entirely plausible, but many people rejected it out of hand as a form of virtue-signalling because Trump was amplifying it. And orange man bad. 🙄

Well he is bad (narcissistic, racist, sexist, sexual predator for starters). Doesn't mean he occasionally says something true. A stopped clock and all that.

Yes. Even weirder, to believe it may have come from a lab was considered racist, while right-thinking progressive position was that it came from the Chinese eating too many bats and pangolins.

1dayatatime · 25/07/2024 00:56

Hmmm so let's see there were only two labs in the world studying coronavirus, one in Texas and one in Wuhan. The Wuhan lab was the only lab researching coronavirus from bats.

Coronavirus started in Wuhan but the first "explanation of the blocks" was that it came from a species jump at a wet market. China refused any UN visit to Wuhan for a full 12 months.

Interesting the species jump theory originated from Peter Daszak. In 2014 Eco Health alliance whose President was Daszak was given considerable funding to investigate coronavirus in bats in Southern China working with the Wuhan Institute of Virology.

Of course it came from an accidental lab leak caused by poor bio security.

it was ridiculous that to say Covid
