Put the country before himself - yes, finally, but he’s done it.

Please God let my country be ok.

Interesting comment in Obama's statement

"But I have extraordinary confidence that the leaders of our party will be able to create a process from which an outstanding nominee emerges"

Yep, they will drop Kamala like a hot brick

I think you need your own thread tbh

Trump and Vance are absolutely fucked if Harris is nominee, a black woman ! 40% of America is non-white and they will come out in DROVES for her, they don't care how compotent she is.

Trump was polling neck and neck prior to this, the floaters ( who always decide the election will go with the 'change' candidate, they always do.

I’m not sure this is looking so likely, at least not according to some polls😕

Tracker1234 · 21/07/2024 21:05

Trump debated with Hilary and looked what happened then! She thought she had won it. Came across as superior to Trump and she came across badly.

I’ve always thought this made sense. She appears to be an extremely popular choice.

Kamala Harris is only popular in her own state. The southern states in particular seem to like Trump-well off, white, keen on guns, male. Utterly depressing. I think he’ll be a shoe in. The democrats will (possibly?) rudderless.

Michelle Obama is popular partly because she's never been in office so never had to make the tough decisions and risk unpopularity. She has no relevant experience for the oval office.

She's a remarkable person, but if the only person the Democrats could find was the wife of the person who used to do the job then they have huge problems.

So people will vote for Harris because she is black? Really??

HRTQueen · 21/07/2024 21:07

Yea Obamas comment is interesting

Not that I think Michelle Obama shall stand but I wonder if they shall get behind someone else

Lifeomars · 21/07/2024 21:07

Slightly off topic but did people on here see Trump cutting his daughter Tiffany dead when she went to kiss him when he was on stage at the convention? It was horrible, obviously the only daughter he likes is Ivanka and he expresses his fondness for her in a deeply troubling way.

PermanentTemporary · 21/07/2024 21:08

Good luck to Kamala Harris... but I wish they were nominating Stacey Abrams instead.

Or Oprah. Given that people like Trump because he finally got a good gig on telly (like us with Johnson), Oprah should be able to deal with his utter fluffshite.

I'm surprised he hasn't come out for Kamala given Biden and the Clintons have, but whoever gets the nomination will need his full hearted endorsement so maybe it's not a bad call to hedge his bets, publicly at least.

Trump debated with Hilary and looked what happened then! She thought she had won it. Came across as superior to Trump and she came across badly.

The difference in 2016 is that Americans were, imo voting for ‘not Hilary’. Either because she was a woman or because of the smear campaigns about her.

At that time, they had no knowledge of how Trump was going to conduct himself. And his behaviour proved to be more outrageous than anyone could ever have predicted.

Ultimately, that’s why Trump lost in 2020.

Tracker1234 · 21/07/2024 21:09

Celeste. Agree. Michelle seems gracious and has some gravitas but honestly is that the best the Democrats can do. Someone who has never given any indication she wants to put her hat in the ring. That is going to go well!

OonaStubbs · 21/07/2024 21:10

honestly, I think this election is a lost cause for the democrats and they shouldn't run anyone that might have a good chance of winning in 2028.

I don’t understand why the wife of a former president is the best person we can choose as women. It feels very misogynistic to me.

No matter how well spoken and lovely, what exactly are her qualifications to hold the highest office in the land?

Trump doesn’t have normal relationships with any of his ‘family’ including his children.

According to Trump’s niece, his relationships with his family members are all transactional. The whole thing is a show.

Obama had gravity. He was presidential. They need to find somebody of that calibre and with his aura. I wonder if all the ambitious potentials will hold back for the sake of their own careers and wait until a run in 2028?

The last few weeks have made me rather appreciative of how our own system allows parties to be ruthless in getting rid of vote-repelling leaders.

Really the merits of otherwise of Kamala Harris are irrelevant. The prospect of Trump unleashed is so awful that the Democrats just have to care about finding a winner. It's concerning that they seem to be cheerleading for Harris by default.

A bit like anyone who has set their sights on being PM as leader of the Tory party is likely to hold off putting themselves forward for now.

Tracker1234 · 21/07/2024 21:12

Covid did Biden a lot of good. He could hide away and didn’t need to think on his feet. In the end he was losing his train of thought, tripped up constantly and went to shake hands with invisible people.

The President Putin gaffe was awful.

crampyi · 21/07/2024 21:12

Can someone explain something to me? Do Americans actually want Donald trump as a president? As all I seem to come across is accusations of sexual abuse, other crimes he’s committed, his wild social media presence etc which would presumably give him a bad enough reputation for him not to be as visible or prominent as he still is? or does his target voter base not care about that?

If they keep telling themselves that most people didn’t vote for Hillary over her sex or false smears, they are doomed to never elect a woman at all.

America is still a very right wing county. Much more than the UK. It’s 2024 now so you’d hope that a woman should indeed have a chance of winning.

Tracker1234 · 21/07/2024 21:15

Trump has linked into the American view of making the US great again. Immigration is raging and some states are a real mess.

My theory is that a portion like his pomposity and another just feels they have no choice. If you gave them an intelligent, respectful moderate R instead they would be much more popular. But those people don’t have the fight in them that one needs for politics these days. Hell, I doubt most would survive a single AIBU thread on MN.

The MAGA movement want him as president.

I don’t know how much of the American population is the MAGA movement though.
