Biden has Covid

Just heard this on the news. They are making a big thing of it. I bet he will use this as an excuse to step down. Bit too convenient IMHO. They are saying very problematic.

Stepping down due to covid seems a pragmatic move to me. Yes, awfully convenient, but also face-saving.

Callalllaaammma · 17/07/2024 23:29

They are keeping him out of the media for a while?
His last few appearences have been a disaster.

Redshoeblueshoe · 17/07/2024 23:32

Yes I'm not convinced. But if they don't want Trump Biden has to go.

Just seen a video of him literally tottering onto the plane. Even the reporter says Biden stepping somewhat gingerly to the plane. it's really painful to watch. He absolutely shouldn't even have been put forward for a second term. And reporter also saying somewhat curiously he isn't wearing a mask.

He needs to go cough on trump for a while.

lawnseed · 17/07/2024 23:41

How convenient 👀

Redshoeblueshoe · 17/07/2024 23:41

If he has covid shouldn't he be at home in bed ?

PinkSunsetSky · 17/07/2024 23:41

Yeah I think this is the start of a plan to get him out of office.
Unwell with Covid, lingering after effects which make him unfit to be president etc
It would be a more dignified way of “ stepping down “ .
And agree all his recent public speaking events have been disastrous and damaging to his campaign.

Justcallmebebes · 17/07/2024 23:43

Well, if I was a complete nut job conspiracy theorist, I'd say "they" tried to get rid of Trump, but that backfired spectacularly. Biden is continuing to refuse to step down so now "they" are going to try and get rid of Biden by blaming covid

Who knows, but this is shaping up to be one hell of an election

EasternStandard · 17/07/2024 23:43

Surely it’s a path to stepping down, also the if a dr says there’s a reason statement

RookieMa · 17/07/2024 23:43

I don't blame him for stepping down after what just happened to Trump for whatever reason

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/07/2024 23:44

Hope he’ll be ok. Time to bow out, Joe.

FuzzyStripes · 17/07/2024 23:45

Must admit that it sounds like an excuse. I think it could be a sensible and face saving way to step back.

Luminousalumnus · 17/07/2024 23:47

If he (his team) use this as a way to withdraw with some dignity fair play to them. Hopefully this is what will happen.

WinterMorn · 17/07/2024 23:49

This screams ‘exit strategy’.

nojudge · 17/07/2024 23:58

As a Democrat, a firm supporter of Joe Biden's time in office, and someone who wishes he would step aside now, I wish it was an exit strategy, but I'm dubious.

And actually, his last several public appearances (Lester Holt interview, NAACP, etc.) have been pretty successful, which isn't ideal - they've been strong enough to keep the status quo.

@Justcallmebebes
Who would 'they' even be in that scenario?

😂

Sorry - sense of humour failure (on my part). These days you never know.

CelesteCunningham · 18/07/2024 00:02

Ah Convenient Covid, he's so youthful he's practically a student. Grin

Yup

So many people being sarcastic and nasty. Why? Joe Biden has achieved so much more in his lifetime than anyone with the time to post on Mumsnet. He has been a very effective President and I can completely understand why he has been so reluctant to stand down with no obvious successor. Trump will be disastrous.
Thanks and goodbye, Joe.

Well said.

SpidersAreShitheads · 18/07/2024 00:15

My worry is that they'll use COVID as the reason for his poor performances - say he was "coming down with it" or suchlike.....

If it's a way to exit the campaign without losing face then I applaud that. I think advancing age and loss of ability can be bloody hard to accept for many of us, let alone if you're used to being someone who's active and involved as Biden has always been.

I have compassion for any older individual who wants to carry on but can't, either due to cognitive or physical reasons. It must be really hard to accept.

If this really is an exit strategy, then it's the best possible outcome - and might just give the world a chance to avoid another dose of Trump in charge, and all the inevitable corruption that entails.

Hope he's OK, and fingers crossed that this is the graceful exit from public office for Joe that many of us would like to see.

He may have been, but by not realising he's no longer capable, the US are now between a rock and a hard place. If he'd bowed our gracefully and let someone else go into this campaign the US wouldn't be in the mess it's in now.

I don’t think people are arguing with most of that but it’s currently looking as though he is giving the presidency to Trump by not standing down. Has he even given a successor a chance? There are plenty of good democrats who would stand in his place.
