Just heard this on the news. They are making a big thing of it. I bet he will use this as an excuse to step down. Bit too convenient IMHO. They are saying very problematic.

His message to the nation after the Trump shooting was great. Not some of the others obviously but credit where it's due

It totally was. Contrast that with Trump's sneering and laughing at a Rally at Nancy Pelosi's husband who was attacked and nearly beaten to death with a hammer in their home. That tells you all you need to know about what sort of person Trump is.

I remember the first time I read his bio - he is a truly wonderful man. He's a great role model.

I think most of us are aware of that. He's remarkable, but he's clearly reaching the point where his body and mind are starting to fail him and this isn't the kind of job where that should be an option. It's really sad, but many of us will have seen this in elderly relatives. My PIL are a year apart in age but you'd think it was a decade if you met them - one of them is suddenly frail, the other not at all.

Obviously, an ailing Biden is infinitely better than Trump, but the risk is whether the US electorate agrees with that.

Biden was infinitely better than Trump in terms of domestic policy. But they're both very poor when it comes to foreign policy.

But not equally poor. Trump is dangerously poor.

If it is "convenient" then I'm pleased. Glad he's not really ill. Glad that maybe the situation can be resolved easily.

He needs to go cough on trump for a while.

😂😂

knitnerd90 · 18/07/2024 11:17

Trump is an absolute disaster on foreign policy, a Russia toadying isolationist who trashes NATO. And Netanyahu adores him. You think Biden is weak on Gaza? Trump would applaud him sending in tanks and Jared Kushner would try to build luxury beachfront condos on the rubble.

People keep talking about Biden’s age, but he’s not that much older than Trump

Well obviously not about age but mental and physical capability. Should we may be compare Biden to the reaction of Trump to his assassination attempt?

For those posting about Michelle, she has never been interested in running and won't run, it was just a hypothetical poll that stated she might do well.

The polls of real potential candidates are the only things worth discussion and there are strong alternatives who could step up on the Democratic side already, who are polling positively.

Exactly. And if Michelle Obama were announced as the candidate I'm sure her ratings would fall given her lack of experience. The woman should be left in peace!

Again, like who?

TokyoSushi · 18/07/2024 13:06

Yes agree that Michelle Obama is pretty unlikely, it's very interesting to watch.

duc748 · 18/07/2024 13:36

My understanding was that the Dems have been pestering Michelle for years to stand, but she's made it clear she's not interested. And who can blame her?

BustingBaoBun · 18/07/2024 13:38

I don't know why they would want Michelle lovely reliable person though she is. She's not had experience in the Administration and 8 years as FL is quite enough for her I'd imagine!

duc748 · 18/07/2024 13:40

They want her because they think she's a winner. Indeed, their only possible winner.

If he has covid shouldn't he be at home in bed ?

Covid doesn’t necessarily mean you’re sick enough for bed. I have cancer and Covid at the moment and don’t need to be in bed.

Mark Kelly would be my pick.

duc748 · 18/07/2024 14:10

They are hardly household names, though, are they? I would imagine the vast majority of Americans have never heard of any of them. Whitmer a possible exception.

knitnerd90 · 18/07/2024 14:14

It would be impossible to pass over Kamala Harris, for multiple reasons.

Mark Kelly is Gabby Gifford's husband. She was the victim of a political gun attack, lucky to survive and has - with her husband - campaigned tirelessly for better gun control ever since. I'm very familiar with both him and with Gretchen Whitmer. I'm a Brit.

I agree with this. She is the only one with sufficient campaign funds and they will lose the black vote if she is passed over.

I think Biden and Harris’s weak spot is very much that they have damaged the rights of women and girls with a whole heap of gender identity ideology becoming law, in schools, sports, scholarships, higher education, services like healthcare and prisons. It’s a huge issue now, really impacting on ‘Middle America’ and millions of floating voters.

In the US it additionally is an ideology with built-in safeguarding fails that offends many in the religious majority. But mostly it bumps up hard against women’s rights, and the rights of girls, to equality and equity. So the ‘be nice’ in theory has turned to toxic shit in practice (as the Labour government in the UK is realising). ‘Even’ in the US, the majority will vote for women’s reproductive health to be a matter for women not the state.

Biden’s let bad things happen to women, and Trump sees the opportunity to exploit Biden’s huge errors - Trump’s an opportunistic prick but an effective one.

Um, excuse me?

Trump is responsible for a court that has done/is doing everything possible to allow states to remove reproductive freedom from women, including in cases of rape, incest and danger to life of the mother. There are states that want to criminalise women travelling out of state for critical healthcare. Birth control is next. Currently there are states where fertilised eggs have more rights than the women who carry them. Trump, Vance and Project 2025, no matter how they try to scurry away, like the rats they are, are looking to expand those draconian policies.

Surely the above pales in comparison?

You sound better informed than most Americans (I'm American). I like Mark Kelly and Gretchen Whitmer but I don't think he, at least, has anywhere near the name recognition needed. Plus we can't afford to lose his senate seat.

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 18/07/2024 15:50

Covid, then Long Covid and other health issues, a way to clear the path!

Viviennemary · 18/07/2024 09:30

Because she is sensible, strong and is a well recognised figure on the world stage and commands respect. And doesn't irritate folk. I'm sure there are plenty more reasons. But Biden is finished. I expect an announcement within the week.

Sure, but she’s not in the running, she can’t run, it’s pointless.

Oh leave her be, I guess the results of the UK election haven't stopped all of these posts. At least they're far fewer.
