Just heard this on the news. They are making a big thing of it. I bet he will use this as an excuse to step down. Bit too convenient IMHO. They are saying very problematic.

@Igotjelly I think the tech outage has been a massive distraction and disruption for everyone today. I still think they will manage to unseat him, over the weekend or at the beginning of the week. Every time I check the Guardian live feed there seem to be more names added to those coming out in favour of him stepping aside. I don't think the tenacious old feller is going to manage to hold on, I really don't.
I could be wrong of course.
I really want to start to see the succession process got to grips with. He's just delaying that. There are actually quite a few interesting possibilities and they need to get on with it.

There has been a fair amount of pushback from Biden’s campaign and the White House insisting he’s the nominee and will not be stepping back. Biden himself has said he looks forward to being back on the campaign trail next week.

heldinadream · 19/07/2024 20:32

@Igotjelly I know. I'm still optimistic that he'll go. Hopefully in the next few days. The wider party seems to me to be mobilising and uniting around it.
I really hope so anyway. They surely cannot fight the election in this parlous state.

TokyoSushi · 19/07/2024 22:23

Yes definitely seems to have quietened down today, but maybe just overtaken by the tech outage, let's see what the weekend brings...

I think he will be gone within the I week. Unforeseen circumstances of Covid. Cough cough.

I hope he is okay. I've felt sad seeing Biden lately. I hope he recovers and stays well.

BustingBaoBun · 20/07/2024 09:19

Whether he should stay or not I feel his position is untenable. The media will watch for every tiny slip up, not easy for a man who has mastered a stutter. Even this morning BBC are reporting on someone saying they have known Biden a long long time but he didn't recognise them at a meeting.
Goodness, that happens to me all the time!
What gets me is...Trump calls people by the wrong name, doesn't pronounce words properly, misnames countries and people every single time he opens his mouth but we hear little of that in the mainstream media.

My favourite was Trump repeatedly calling Tim Cook the CEO of Apple ....
Tim Apple 😂
If Biden did that we would never hear the end of it!

Viviennemary · 20/07/2024 22:26

Trump at a Rally now. A few months ago with all the court cases he looked like he had already lost. My how the tables have turned.

Just switched the news on. Trump is praising Biden. Has he stepped down?

He isn't now. Calling him crooked Jo Biden. Ouch!

I doubt it’s Covid.

he won’t step back voluntarily so I expect they’re gonna pull his meds / finish him off.

He’s not useful anymore so he’ll be gone soon and they’ll blame it on COVID and all the schmucks will believe it.

Are you honestly insinuating that ‘they’ (whomever the fuck that might be) are going to kill Biden?

duc748 · 20/07/2024 22:53

I'm sure there are many, many people in the US who would believe that.

Boohbooh · 20/07/2024 23:34

If he pulls out of the race in the next few days I presume the pressure will then be on him ho step down as President and let Harris take over?

You'd think that'd be the logic, but in US politics, you never know! Even if so, she wouldn't be Prez for long. Could be a record! Although if I remember rightly, there's a close contender.

Yep.

Viviennemary · 21/07/2024 18:44

If he won't step down he'll be made to. That's what I think.

Who would they choose to succeed him if he did stand down? Was talking to an American acquaintance the other day who thought there was no electable candidate because there is no current Democratic governor (or similar) who has managed to make a positive impact on their city/state. Lots of Americans look at California in horror and wouldn't vote for a Californian candidate, for example.

BustingBaoBun · 21/07/2024 18:51

He has stood down.

Putting · 21/07/2024 18:56

Never mind - it’s on BBC News now

AnyFucker · 21/07/2024 18:56

I was just reading this thread and a news notification came up. He isn’t running again.

halava · 21/07/2024 18:58

A good decision for his health and well being. The king is dead, long live the king.

Next up who is the candidate to be now?
