Just heard this on the news. They are making a big thing of it. I bet he will use this as an excuse to step down. Bit too convenient IMHO. They are saying very problematic.

Gosh, they did say Sunday but I thought it had died down a little. Sky News leaning towards Harris...

Joe Biden has withdrawn from the US presidential race.
I wonder who will take over ?

I really hope the Dems have a chance to beat the Orange Maniac now.

However, I'm not sure that they can. But this will be a fascinating race now.

Good luck Biden. Hope you enjoy a happy retirement. You did the States some service.

These are strange times, what on earth is going to happen.

His statement (to my mind) did not seem to give a ringing endorsement to Harris as a candidate.

Is anyone else reading that into it also?

Indiaorigin · 21/07/2024 19:09

I don’t know enough about American politics. Would he have been expected to endorse Harris in the letter? Maybe in the TV thing?

I'm not sure. He speaks very warmly of her, calling her extraordinary, but maybe this standing down statement is not about the next candidate I dunno....

Lovely tweet from his Granddaughter, Naomi Biden

He has just tweeted a ringing endorsement of Kamala.

biden tweet

My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term. My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made. Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.

OK, thanks for the update. I was only going by what was in his statement, which when I think about it probably wasn't about KH but him anyway.

Nobody on this thread has researched potential rival candidates or how they poll. Michelle is just thrown around on social media as an ooo she'd be good wouldn't she option. She's not in the running.

However people like Mark Kelly are, and are polling 5 points above Biden presently. You should take a look at the guy, he's a former military guy, a NASA spaceman, looks a bit like he should be in Die Hard, and is someone whose optics and approach seems like it would be very very attractive to a lot of voters. He has an amazing wife, too. He's only 60. I found out about him from a newspaper article the other day.

I genuinely respect Joe Biden, but in a perfect world it'd be Mark Kelly for me.

There’s a good piece on Mark Kelly within this Independent article this evening, @Workoutinthepark.
