It's so depressing. It's been dark for hours, now pissing down. Again.

Haven't worn any summer clothes
Haven't had a bbq / sat out in the garden
No paddling pool out
It's not cold it's just damp and humid

It's shite and I'm over it.

Rant over.

I live in a tourist beach town on the south coast ; supposedly the ' warmest' part of the UK. Absolutely depressing! Actually dreading the school holidays being cooped up in house watching Cbeebies. Pointless having a beach and countryside if it's too wet to use.

MintTwirl · 15/07/2024 22:00

I am totally fed up of it too. Constant rain here for days now and another day due tomorrow when I am meant to be taking dc to an outdoors event, booked and paid for it months ago but feel like sacking it off as we will yet again be damp and uncomfortable.

WhereDidItG0 · 15/07/2024 22:00

It's the same here. I'm torn between being fed up with the muggy heat and being slightly afraid that we'll get another 42C heatwave.

Pinkstanley · 15/07/2024 22:02

Today wasn’t bad where I am in Scotland. Could have had washing out all day but I just don’t take the gamble with that now as it’s just been raining constantly for weeks and weeks. It was the same last year too.

Can only hope the jet stream moves soon as we get some decent weather into August. It won’t be long before the schools go back in Scotland and it’s been shit and cold and wet.

I think it’s only been once I’ve been able to sit outside without a hoodie or jumper on.

BungoZippy · 15/07/2024 22:03

I kid you not I saw a woman walking her dog with anorak and a bobble hat on!!

I live in the South East

Fizbosshoes · 15/07/2024 22:04

Last weekend it was 9.5° and pelting down on Saturday. It's July ffs. That would be depressing enough in April.
Today it's 17° and pelting down. And no I don't feel particularly grateful for the extra 8°!!🤣

I know you can of course go out in the rain but it's just the relentlessness, it's basically been raining all year
My hobby is running, I'm used to getting wet muddy feet in the winter and xc season but this time of year is when the trails usually dry up and it's nice to go off road. Half the paths are still boggy, my trainers barely get a chance to dry out.

MidnightPatrol · 15/07/2024 22:07

I have been wearing my ankle length waterproof and sunglasses most days. Often with Birkenstocks, as it’s a bit warm for my winter shoes and I don’t want to ruin my trainers in the rain.

It’s a look, I suppose. Covers all bases.

Babbahabba · 15/07/2024 22:09

It's been horrible. Didn't even have any prolonged nice spells April-June! 😭😭

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 15/07/2024 22:10

Don't want scorching hot cause thats vile but just some sun! Or a day without rain and some brightness. So dull dull

TheBestBear · 15/07/2024 22:13

RampantIvy · 15/07/2024 21:08

I think the rain lovers on mumsnet:

Don't have children
Don't like being outside
Live in big houses
Own a tumble dryer
Don't have pets
Have plenty of money

😅
I prefer rain over heat. I used to enjoy the heat until I had an anxious dog, the rain meant quieter walks with less dogs around.

Don't have children - incorrect
Don't like being outside - incorrect
Live in big houses - I wish
Own a tumble dryer - yes, but it's broken
Don't have pets - incorrect
Have plenty of money - hahaha, nope.

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 15/07/2024 22:18

We have solar panels which heat the water. In previous years I've not needed to use gas at all between about May and September, as they've generated enough electricity to get the water toasty hot.

This year I've had to boost it virtually every day.

So shit weather that is costing me a fortune.

Fizbosshoes · 15/07/2024 22:22

Lots of people act like there are literally only 2 choices - unbearable heat, or unreasonably cool and raining!!

Like would 20° and sunny be too much to ask?
That's surely not outrageous for those who dislike hot weather

ssd · 15/07/2024 22:23

It was beautiful today north west coast of Scotland. And yesterday, sun is out and very warm. Had a swim in the sea. And got sunburn.

What is this 'sun' you speak of?

It's the worst isn't it? I bought my DC loads of shorts and t shirts ready for summer and am now scrabbling to find trousers, long sleeved t shirts and rain jackets.
Contemplating booking a week away to get some vitamin D

Fizbosshoes · 15/07/2024 22:28

So shit weather that is costing me a fortune.

I mentioned on another weather-whinge thread that my cats seem to have gone into their pre-hibernation phase of eating loads to fatten themselves up for winter, which is usually in mid september/October. We're getting through loads more food than usual! In the summer they generally spend most of the day lying in the garden and barely come in or eat anything. In the winter they spend all day lying on someone's bed!

What's quite amusing is thinking back to the last few scorchio heatwaves in England and moaning about how hot and drained I felt and thinking that Scotland would be a better prospect with increasing temperatures caused by climate change.

It's very jetstream dependent, isn't it, our weather?

We're lucky enough to be going to California for a couple of weeks soon. We are keeping a close eye on the weather as they have had severe heat recently in cities like Sacramento and every year in California there are forest fires caused by heat and dry weather, made worse by the wind. So we're going to be going from trying to dodge the rain in this country to keeping an eye on which direction the wind is spreading the forest fires. It's mad there. Even Death Valley where it's nearly 50 degrees C has flash flooding when there's been a tropical storm.

Weather is wierd.

It's climate change

JohnTheRevelator · 15/07/2024 22:34

I don't think I've witnessed rain quite like I saw this evening! It absolutely fell down and just kept going and going for near on 3 hours. The pavements in the high street were under several inches of water. And it's St. Swithin's day today! 😱

reesewithoutaspoon · 15/07/2024 22:35

It's not even the temperatures so much, can also cope with the odd rainy day. It's this oppressive grey gloom, every day it's just a grey blanket of cloud over the whole sky.
Saw a bit of blue this morning but it was gone by 9 am and back to the grey cloud again. (NW UK)
It's just depressing now. Can't wait to go away end of July.

ilovebagpuss · 15/07/2024 22:40

Yes it's awful I want to sit out in the evenings I've spent the last 9 month's inside under a fleece blanket. I just want a few weeks at about 21 and dry it's been 13 degrees here some days.
Also feel like it stops any joy in community events and things other countries can enjoy. We had a lovely little family fun day and dog show and it peed it down all day.
Then there was a music event fundraiser tipped it down and feeezing.

Jellykat · 15/07/2024 22:41

Totally agree, i'm still wearing my winter clothes and have worn a raincoat forever.. but the Grey skies and lack of light makes me feel like im wading through mud just to function!

Cooper77 · 15/07/2024 22:48

This is just insane. It’s basically been grim since October. Winter here in Essex was foul - no frost, no snow, no cold sunlight glinting off the ice, just dinge and drizzle. Then we had the worst spring I can remember. There were about three days of sunshine in the whole of March. And this has been the worst summer I can remember as well. If it carries on like this until October, it will have been a whole year of gloom.

That said, I utterly loathe the heat, so at least we’ve been spared the torture of a heatwave.

scalt · 15/07/2024 22:50

It’s all those mumsnetters moaning about the heat who have caused this. People need to be more careful what they wish for.

And I will never believe in “worst drought ever” or “hottest July on record” again.

thedendrochronologist · 15/07/2024 22:59

I was thinking the same thing

I love summer clothes too

I'm fairly prosaic about the UK summer but this reminds me of 2007 when the flood happened - day after day after day of rain. You could set your watch by it. Clear morning, rain early afternoon evening.

The worst summer I remember.

Friday I was so cold I could not sleep. I had to get the electric blanket for Saturday.

I agree. Low to mid 20s during the day and sunny, with nights cool enough to sleep comfortably would be perfect.
