New things that got instantly ruined

I have just spent £315 having some pictures framed (I know, it’s crazy expensive). I wanted to put the smallest (A4ish size) one up near a light switch so bought command strips which I have used successfully before on similar sized pictures which have been up for several years so didn’t think it would be an issue. Used extra as I always do, 5 minutes later it fell down onto my tiled floor and now the frame is scuffed. Apparently the paint in our kitchen isn’t very good for sticking stuff on.

Make me feel better and tell me about your new stuff that has got ruined? I feel like everyone else gets to have nice stuff and mine always has a problem or gets spoilt 😩

Moved into a brand new beautiful duplex flat conversion which was to be our retirement dream home. Within a couple of hours DH had decided it was a good idea to carry a full wine rack down the stairs. It wasn’t - bottles exploded everywhere, red and white and also a few bottles of 30 year old port that were being kept to celebrate a really big occasion. There was glass and assorted wines all over the pale beige stair carpet and a long way up the staircase walls. DH cried but I was surprisingly calm and forgiving, probably because he was so upset

To be fair, it did smell nice

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 13/07/2024 13:49

I always feel like you as well OP and it doesn’t help my dad always used to say it to me when I was a kid. I picked up my lovely new car (not brand new-five years old) but was lovely and polished and caught it on the central reservation of a 30mph road. Same car some idiot decided to try to squeeze past me in traffic and clipped it causing scratches.
We got a lovely new high chair and within a couple of days the tray got left on a hot hob and melted.

Packetofcrispsplease · 13/07/2024 13:49

New made to measure floor length curtains from John Lewis had only been up a week and somehow dog got upstairs and lifted his leg to mark them 😤 .
He doesn’t usually get upstairs it was because someone left the stairgate open .
I didn’t realise until I happened to be cleaning and the hem was wet and yellowish 😩 .
I blame the person who left the gate open .
Also we had new carpet put down after a flood in our old house , it hadn’t been down long when my middle child decided to head in there with a large mug of hot chocolate and they tripped up spilled it

£225 pair of ancient greek sandals vs labrador puppy. Never even got the chance to wear them.

£500 odd light fitting. Electrician clipped it when taking his ladders out the room.

Lovely wool coat from Boden. Again….labrador puppy.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 13/07/2024 13:50

Oh and got nail polish on our new £400 foot stool. Got it off but used a carpet cleaner that smells horrid. Finally got the smell out then wiped it with a cloth that had some horrid smelling substance on it and now it stinks ☹️

Bluevelvetsofa · 13/07/2024 13:50

In our first house, as newlyweds, we were keen to do some decorating. The house had a small lobby with a door on the left to the living room. DH came through the front door carrying a massive can of white gloss paint, opened the door to the living room and the door swung back, knocking the can of paint out of his hands. I can still see it in slow motion now.

White gloss paint on a carpet is not a good thing. In the end, we had to spring for a new carpet and the paint one went into a bedroom, with the bed over the worst of it. Copious bottles of white spirit only really diluted the white.

Just had expensive lvt flooring laid in the kitchen. DH and I were moving the fridge freezer back in and the bottom of it gouged a great chunk out of one of the tiles. Luckily we had some left over so the flooring guys came back the next day to replace the individual tile.

spiderlight · 13/07/2024 13:52

We'd just had a lovely new staircarpet laid and the walls painted in very pale cream. About two days later, DS, who was about 4 at the time, ate a full punnet of blueberries despite being told not to, and then came out of his bedroom in the middle of the night, went 'Mummy, I feel...' and projectile vomited bright purple blueberry puke all down the stairs and over the cream walls.

I had a cuddle stone with my baby's ashes inside. It broke my heart when I dropped it on the bathroom floor.

Brand new pristine new-build house - stayed that way for all of 20 minutes until the removal men tracked mud all over the carpets, broke two of the doors, took a chunk out of the kitchen countertop, and scraped the wall all the way from the front door to the bedroom upstairs.

No 😱 our removal men broke a large TV and scuffed the wall a little bit as they headed up the stairs .
the construction team here on the new build site touched it up for us

i am so so so sorry

Dr13Hadley · 13/07/2024 13:53

Another one fridge freezer related. Just bought a new one and clumsy SIL knocked a dining chair into it and dented the door.

Pandadunks · 13/07/2024 13:53

First time ever having someone else paint/decorate house. Immaculate paint job, walls smooth as glass…
Toddler apparently saw a blank canvas, used fabric paints and smeared a ‘rainbow’ the whole length of one wall…

several coats of paint later and I can still see that sodding rainbow!

Pandadunks · 13/07/2024 13:56

I tell myself I’d rather live in a home than a show house… but there are times when I dream of a fresh, clean uncluttered house not full of nicks, and stains, dents from footballs or cricket balls, and mountains of kids shoes!!!!

Pleiades2020 · 13/07/2024 13:57

Have you thought of photo canvases, they're really light and only need a single picture pin to hang on.

Hazelville · 13/07/2024 13:58

greenpolarbear · 13/07/2024 12:50

Did you stick the command strips up and leave them 24 hours before attaching the frames?

Is that what you are supposed to do?

jackstini · 13/07/2024 14:01

Dropped a bowl of spaghetti bolognaise on my Mum's new cream carpet the day it was laid

Kerbed alloys on day 2 of owning a new car. Twice

Spent £50 out of my first month's pay (£237) on some Levi 501s. Tripped over crossing a road a few days later and tore a massive whole in both knees. I defiantly cut them off and wore as hot pants for years

My friend knitted me a beautiful mohair tank top when I was 12. My mum tumble dried it and it came out like hamster bedding 😭

Dropped a pan on newly tiled floor. That crack still annoys me 18 years on

Cattery · 13/07/2024 14:04

Had a new hall carpet laid and a workman trod dog shit on it just as the carpet bloke was pulling off my drive 🤬

Lilly11a · 13/07/2024 14:05

Had new lino in the kitchen in the week.

On the Sunday evening , the washing machine stopped working - this turned out to be because it was plugged into an extension lead below the oven which fat had dropped on !!!

So far

  1. Need new wiring
  2. New washing machine

Son took old washing machine out and put in back garden . When we rolled it to the front for collection it caught the corner of one of the patio stones lifting it up.

  1. Patio guys back in to reset the stone.

Then when they fitted the new washing machine of course the new lino got torn.

  1. Luckily managed to repatch this with spare .

That was an expensive Sunday evening

New plastered and freshly painted wall damaged when granite worktop was installed,
bath chipped when tiler dropped a tile in the bath, shower surround dented when plumber dropped it on his head…I was just glad he was ok with this one! Dent still there. Bathroom sink cracked by carpenter when he cut the units of which he also cut too big! Alloy wheels damaged and two tyres punctured on new car when driving out of my road at night and a kerb stone had dislodged. Alloy wheels further scratched when having new tyres fitted. Freshly painted walls scratched when carpet men decided to put their tools up against the wall…same with new worktops workmen love to put their tools on them for some reason! Asked workman to hang a huge mirror, rather than using the holes already in the mirror he decided to drill the back of the mirror to insert screws, basically he totally f**ked it up, although the drill holes can’t be seen it was an antique mirror! Most of these things I’ve had to pay myself for the repairs.

Snapped a light fitting in my first week in my first rented house.

Dropped the hoover and cracked a kitchen tile in same house.

My friend saved up for a new cooker, wanted it in red to match her kitchen. It was delivered, she cut the wrapping off….and scraped the front with the scissors. Big scratch that none of the red nail varnishes she tried blended in.

DH melted my shell work jacket by leaving the iron on and answering the door. They were old stock from the transfer of the previous company and no longer available. New company didn’t issue fleeces/comfy jackets only blazers 😡.

DH also broke one of my Cath Kidston Snoopy glasses by stacking them on top of each other. Never found them on EBay/Vinted.

Bought some Ralph Lauren sunglasses, tucked them in my top, bent over to pick a drink up. Glasses fell onto the patio and got a scratch right down the middle of one of the lenses.

Fizbosshoes · 13/07/2024 14:09

First full day of owning a new (to me) car that I had saved for, my sibling asked if they could drive it (5 min from home) and made a huge £800 dent in the side, on a concrete post!

I bought coffee filter with a glass carafe. You put the ground coffee into the metal filter and it dripped into the carafe. It was really pretty, but if I'm honest a bit impractical as it made two cups but by the time I'd drunk the first cup the remaining coffee was stone cold. TBH I had little confidence that anything delicate would last long in our household, and it was the filter that I wanted most. About two weeks after I'd got it I went into the kitchen to make coffee and the carafe had disappeared. I checked the cupboards then asked the family. DH said "It got broken". He is a blame avoider so when he uses the passive tense it means that he did it, if one of the DC had done it he would have said so.

It's a minor thing but it's depressing to buy things knowing they will probably be destroyed, so I just admire stuff in shops and then walk away. If I didn't have DH and DS (DD is much less clumsy) I could have sofas in nice colours without worrying about stains, a glass bowl for the table (I love pretty blown glass and have been tempted so many times). Even my Brabantia bin has several dints in it and the touch release top is permanently released, the DC occasionally offer to get me a new one for Christmas but a) why? the new one will also be ruined and b) fuck that for a Christmas present.

Edited

@BlackAmericanoNoSugar did you knoe you can buy the tiny release catches? Our (very dented) Brabantia bin needs a new one of these every couple of years thanks to my DP and DCs.

My son got his first new iPhone .he was absolutely thrilled We got home from the Apple shop and he went down to our cellar which has open treads on the stairs .While running back up the stairs his phone fell out of his pocket and smashed .The following day we went back to Apple to have the screen repaired.

We've got a friend who can fix anything, he does phones which repair shops refuse. He did my daughter's kindle. He has a young neighbour, who dropped her phone, he took a few days to get the parts, fixed it and she was delighted. She came round the same evening, having smashed it again!
