New things that got instantly ruined

I have just spent £315 having some pictures framed (I know, it’s crazy expensive). I wanted to put the smallest (A4ish size) one up near a light switch so bought command strips which I have used successfully before on similar sized pictures which have been up for several years so didn’t think it would be an issue. Used extra as I always do, 5 minutes later it fell down onto my tiled floor and now the frame is scuffed. Apparently the paint in our kitchen isn’t very good for sticking stuff on.

Make me feel better and tell me about your new stuff that has got ruined? I feel like everyone else gets to have nice stuff and mine always has a problem or gets spoilt 😩

Two gorgeous wool jumpers worn once each. My 'D' H decided to grab clothes for a wash and managed to shrink them to approx age 6. I'm in my 40s.

Brand new blue carpet, I tipped a whole tin of white paint over it. I never got it all out, and ended up rearranging the furniture to cover the worst bit.

greenpolarbear · 13/07/2024 12:50

Did you stick the command strips up and leave them 24 hours before attaching the frames?

Corknut · 13/07/2024 12:52

I destroy a lot of things. I had my new car 2 days and I drove it into a pole in sainsburys. I dropped my DHs new phone, as in 3hrs old, onto a plate(?!) and it smashed, I mean smashed into 100s of pieces. I ruined the new carpet in our lounge about 3 weeks after it was laid by dropping 2l of Irn Bru onto it. The stain is still there 3yrs later. The list is endless tbh

RivkaTheBold · 13/07/2024 12:54

Some of these are insurance jobs, my mum got a whole room recarpeted after dropping her iron and singeing an iron shaped hole in her carpet.

Same for burnt tile and bathroom suites.

We claim for all sorts on ours and they're always very helpful.

I would have been raging! Did they apologise and offer compensation?

No, they said it was “a normal amount of damage” and I was being “a bit precious about it” (actual quotes). This was a major national chain. I think they had under spec’d the job and were too rushed and with too few people. They broke a lot of the stuff they packed too.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 13/07/2024 12:56

Much like the OP, I bought a paper-cut picture (where an outline is cut from paper) for a shocking amount of money from a local artist. Struggled for ages to find a frame to fit, because the picture is circular. Eventually found one, put frame up with command strips. Two days later the picture fell, caught on the skirting board and the entire frame broke open, meaning the picture inside got bent.

It's current propped up on the stairs. I lack the will to hunt down another frame and just hope that the picture will lie flat again when I do get one.

I had saved for years for a new kitchen, used all my savings. My mum came to have a look the day it was finished, I went to answer the door and she put a hot saucepan down on the wooden work top. Devastated

First year of marriage I started to buy one piece a month of a very expensive dinner set. (£5 per saucer in 1979)
Second year I was able to purchase the teapot.
Got it home and placed it on the window ledge while sorting out the cupboard.
DH decided to open the window and knocked it off.
Third year mum bought it for me as a Christmas present.
Opened it on Christmas morning and placed it on a low table.
1 hour later DH broke it again.
Then children came along and other things needed to be bought.

We are into the 30th year it had been discontinued.
Found one on eBay second hand.
Arrived and you guessed it DH dropped it.

We have been married for 45 years and I have found another on eBay big question do I get it or not.
The rest of the dinner set which we use everyday is still in good condition.
Only thing missing is the teapot.
Maybe I don't need a teapot but it will go in the wall unit by the coffee pot, milk jug and sugar bowl.

Treated myself to a beautiful Emma Bridgewater Gallon Teapot. Proudly displayed on the worktop, waiting for the first use.
Went to use it at my DC’s Baptism afternoon tea, opened the cupboard above and a bottle of Calpol fell out and cracked the teapot so it’s unusable.
It’s the most expensive ‘ornament ‘ I’ve ever bought.

KreedKafer · 13/07/2024 12:58

I bought a hedge trimmer a couple of years ago and, within five minutes, accidentally cut through the power cable.

Funfaxfan · 13/07/2024 12:58

Every single thing we own gets ruined within minutes. Now I just see it as better to get it over with. We just got a new car. I'm tempted to just drive it into a wall on purpose so I don't have to worry about ruining it.

MultipleCarrierBags · 13/07/2024 13:02

Moved
First day there, I spilt a bottle of red wine onto the cream lounge carpet.
After a few years, the carpet was replaced with laminate flooring

Spottyhorse24 · 13/07/2024 13:02

Brand new flax linen duvet cover. Cat decided it was fun to claw the moment I'd put it on the bed.

stayathomer · 13/07/2024 13:04

Once treated myself using birthday vouchers to a Chanel eyeshadow palette. Opened it in the bathroom and dropped it and it all smashed. Cue a ‘noooooooooooo’ they probably heard miles away😅

stayathomer · 13/07/2024 13:05

Oh and all the collars my dog ate as a puppy (little magician 😅). Embarrassing to go in about five times in two weeks to buy new ones😅

Slushynana · 13/07/2024 13:05

Husband bought a new car, he had spent ages clearing the garage as he wanted to put the car in it to avoid damage and bird poo. I went in the garage for the lawn mower, knocked a rake and it fell and scraped a long scratch down the drivers door. He wasn’t impressed.

Sgtmajormummy · 13/07/2024 13:06

A friend of mine, who DH had an eye for, gave us lovely matching herbal tea mugs (the ones with ceramic tea leaf strainers and a lid/coaster) as a wedding present. DH was a touch too grateful…
They lasted about a month.
Oops.

I am really sorry and angry on your behalf. What bastards

My husband bought a new splash back for our kitchen to go behind the cooker etc. made to measure, cost £500. He brought it in through the utility room and hit the edge against the side of the kitchen counter. Smashed into a million pieces 😭😭

😯😯🫣🫣😭😭😭 @Miloandfreddy 💔💔💔

Treat yourself and don't let that bloody ejit anywhere near it.

We bought a new oak dining table and sideboard, with a matching mirror. Ex-H went to hang the mirror and dropped it breaking the mirror and marking the sideboard. Bought new glass for the mirror but couldn’t get the scuff mark out of the sideboard.

WindsurfingDreams · 13/07/2024 13:10

I bought a beautiful white t shirt when my two were preschoolers (I know, I know). It was just the perfect shape and had a bit of really lovely detailing.

I wore it for the first time to take the children to a blooming birthday party didn't I! One sticky toddler paw print later and it was never the same again. I tried to replace it but they were sold out

Ihateboris · 13/07/2024 13:10

Treated myself to a pair of Christian louboutin shoes. Delivered 10am, absolutely torn to shreds by midday by my labrador puppy 🐶. My own stupid fault for leaving them unattended. I actually cried 😭

I burnt a new carpet with hair straighteners and covered it with a rug!
