New things that got instantly ruined

I have just spent £315 having some pictures framed (I know, it’s crazy expensive). I wanted to put the smallest (A4ish size) one up near a light switch so bought command strips which I have used successfully before on similar sized pictures which have been up for several years so didn’t think it would be an issue. Used extra as I always do, 5 minutes later it fell down onto my tiled floor and now the frame is scuffed. Apparently the paint in our kitchen isn’t very good for sticking stuff on.

Make me feel better and tell me about your new stuff that has got ruined? I feel like everyone else gets to have nice stuff and mine always has a problem or gets spoilt 😩

We brought a lovely new sofa when moving into our new house. Within a few days of having it our cat decided to pee all over it. So had to pay to have it cleaned. Still annoys me thinking about it now.

I have a lovely rug that I had to put away because the bloody cat decided it was a scratch mat. Every time he throws up or breaks something, I tell him 'THIS is why we can't have nice things!'

FeltCarrot · 13/07/2024 13:29

A week after our new kitchen was finished one of DD’s friends dropped a wine bottle, chipped the edge of the corian worktop and a porcelain floor tile.

Still chipped 10 years later. 😢

NoisyBrain · 13/07/2024 13:29

I am so clumsy I rarely buy myself anything expensive, but splashed out on some nice sunglasses just before going on holiday. First day I wore them I stupidly put them in a pocket in my beach bag instead of the case. There was some sand in the pocket so of course they got scratched. Thankfully the scratches are not in my direct line of vision, but it I can still see them out of the corner of my eye, taunting me.

Is it a Tesla? If so, same here 😩. We’re on our 2nd one and it’s happened to both of them. Never curbed any of the many cars we’ve had in over 40yrs of driving ……

My car is not a Tesla but is the first car I’ve had with alloy wheels. I took out insurance to cover damage to the alloys as I knew that I had curbed my old hubs a few times when parking.

I must check how long the insurance was for as my car is now almost three years old - you can guarantee that I’ll damage one as soon as the cover ends!

I bought a beautiful Brora cashmere cardigan early this year, in the sale but still not cheap, beautiful colour, everything perfect. Wore it barely at all.

Of course the moths have got to it and there are huge holes down the front & edges. Will have to try to find an invisible mender but it will never be the same again now.

SantiagoSky · 13/07/2024 13:32

I ordered a beautiful floor lamp which (ex) DP broke while unpacking it :(

ginislife · 13/07/2024 13:34

I wouldn't know where to start:
The £300 mirror above the fireplace that cracked due to the log burner
The 4 bar stools that the child used as target practice - with my brand new knife set
2 flat screen tvs cracked in 2 weeks - I'd already claimed on insurance for the cheaper one of the 2
My grey leather sofas that are so badly scratched by the dogs jumping on them
The chip in the middle of my Karndean floor
The 2 dinner knives from a set that were used to dig weeds out of the drive by the teens. They were "helping"
The lid of the Jacuzzi that was cracked by sitting on it. I spent £500 on a new one and it seems it's cracked again.
My lovely car went in for damage repairs done by someone else. I'd had it back 10 days and I damaged it
My leather office chair the dog savaged with his teeth when he saw the postman was eventually replaced. The dog did the same thing again within a week.
I could go on.........

MoveToParis · 13/07/2024 13:34

The day we got a new cream sofa 14 year old DD had a tantrum about something and took her drink out of the kitchen to sit on the sofa. She spilled the drink all over it. It has mostly come out, and given that she is the one who likes things “just so” the most, it causes her the most pain.

room2four2 · 13/07/2024 13:34

Saved up for ages to buy a MacBook Air. it arrived and I set it up. Went to make a cup of coffee, came back and my cat had taken a bite out of the corner, through the screen. The only use I got out of it was the ten minutes setting it up.

I am now using the cheapest, slowest laptop known to mankind.

Pic on the left is just before the incident! Pic on the right is the result of him not being allowed near the new one 😂

Had my very flashy brand new car for approximately 8 hours when someone stole the number plates.

I spent the next month or 3 getting repeatedly pulled over by the police because I reported them stolen.

FlamingoQueen · 13/07/2024 13:35

In my previous house - new lino put down, my Dad scuffed it when helping to put my washing machine back in!

RubyDarke · 13/07/2024 13:35

The only car we ever bought from new (all others have been used) - first time I took it out, in high winds, a wheelie bin flew over a hedge, hit the car, dented the wing and broke the wing mirror.

My current car - used but, for me, extravagant - I was driving it home from the dealership along rural roads at dusk and a huge white bird flew into the windscreen and cracked it.

  • when renting, our oven door broke and it took a month to be replaced. Replacement finally installed, boyfriend tries to move the oven slightly using the handle which has a label on it saying do not move with this. Glass smashed completely. No oven for another month.
  • We’re getting our bathroom done at the moment and I’ve splashed out on some fancy wall lights, normally very careful husband opened them to take a look and immediately dropped one.
VeronicaBeccabunga · 13/07/2024 13:37

Emptied all the furniture out of our living room, including very heavy oak sideboard and wiring for media stuff and hundreds of books, for new carpet.
Looked lovely.
My husband tripped in the doorway with a tray carrying a pot of coffee and a jug of milk. We'd had vino and we made the spill worse by frantically rubbing at it, so the coffee grounds and milk got massaged into the carpet.
The stain was just into the room and a rug would've looked stupid.
Re-ordered the carpet, shifted everything out, and then back, again.

MermaidMummy06 · 13/07/2024 13:37

My (adult) cousin came to visit & wanted to go Go Karting.

Forgot he had his brand new iPhone in his back pocket. Got off the go kart & pulled it out of his pocket... looking more like a flip phone. He'd literally snapped it in half!

Tbh he'd been a bit arrogant & rude towards me so I thought it was a touch of karma!!

RedPanda901 · 13/07/2024 13:38

We bought a Designer’s Guild silk rug when my son was 2, just before potty training… Yes, he peed on the rug and the stain is still there 12 years later. My husband and I both can’t believe we bought such an expensive impractical rug. Must have been sleep deprivation!

crowgift · 13/07/2024 13:39

I saved up for ages for my first smart phone - dropped it from height onto a marble floor later the same day: destroyed. Years later it still stings.

Echobelly · 13/07/2024 13:39

We bought a beautiful blue radiator to match our front room. When mounting it on brackets we dropped it and it got a scratch on the front so we couldn't hide it. Fortunately it's not very noticable unless you know it's there.

Brand spanking new car, less than 10 miles on the clock and on the way home from picking it up from the showroom I broke the wing mirror.

Hubby got brand new company car but I used it the first day as he had had an operation, drove to work and in the underground car park on way down miscalculated the pillar and wrapped drivers side into it, then tried to reverse and did even more damage. Thankfully it was a company car and they paid for a new door.

Echobelly · 13/07/2024 13:41

Also my mum decided to have her own car for the first time in years as my dad was doing a lot of voluntary stuff and needing the car. First time she took it out, got blindsided by a lorry and very fortunately not hurt but the car was a write-off. She didn't get a replacement.

I don't get it.

I assume the DH fancied the giver, shagged her in gratitude, and they split up after only a month. Or OP smashed the mugs when the dalliance was discovered!

Uselesssil · 13/07/2024 13:44

OriginalUsername2 · 13/07/2024 12:38

Ah, my cats ruin absolutely everything. I’ve given up having nice things. One of them even shags my clothes and drags them round the house.

I’ve got cats like that too, which have damaged things, which in total will probably have cost over £1k. Brand new (expensive) top, cat jumped onto my knee and claws caught on it, several holes (she has ultra sharp claws) which then laddered, so only fit for the bin. Knocked glass of red wine over onto new rug, stain won’t come out.

Oh and other cat shags my clothes and drags them too!

Wouldn’t be so bad, but they weren’t even my cats but dd’s, who asked me to look after them for a couple of months when dgd was born. Dgd is 7.

EffinMagicFairy · 13/07/2024 13:45

New leather armchair, I touched the cat who was laying asleep along top of sofa and made him jump, he landed on the leather armchair with his claws out causing a 10cm long, deep scratch in the middle of the back, I had to put a throw on it, eventually as the chair got used, the scratch sort of blended in or we got used to it.

TheLastTrainForTheCoast · 13/07/2024 13:46

Feel better after reading these.

Brand new bathroom, saved for years. Cleaned all the new chrome taps with the sponges I've always used. But they weren't the same and they scratched it all. First time I'd cleaned it

wtfissummer · 13/07/2024 13:16

I don't get it.

Her DH got a bit too close to herbal tea cup giver. She, understandably, smashed the cups.
