New things that got instantly ruined

I have just spent £315 having some pictures framed (I know, it’s crazy expensive). I wanted to put the smallest (A4ish size) one up near a light switch so bought command strips which I have used successfully before on similar sized pictures which have been up for several years so didn’t think it would be an issue. Used extra as I always do, 5 minutes later it fell down onto my tiled floor and now the frame is scuffed. Apparently the paint in our kitchen isn’t very good for sticking stuff on.

Make me feel better and tell me about your new stuff that has got ruined? I feel like everyone else gets to have nice stuff and mine always has a problem or gets spoilt 😩

Teenage me bought some lovely flared jeans for £40 - all the money I'd saved from birthday and previous Christmas. Wore them out once, then my mother cut 3 (wonky) inches off them because "they drag too much on the floor darling". They looked silly after that and I gave them to a charity shop.

Funnily enough we don't have the best relationship these days.

Sounds a bit nasty tbh.

We bought our first house from a friend. He decided to sell just as we decided to buy. Perfect house for us and he had recently replaced all the carpets

Two days before exchange he rang to say the radiator in the front bedroom had stopped working. His dad was a plumber and knew what the problem was and would come and fix it the following week.

The day we moved in, dh and I went to collect some furniture and my "lovely" fil decided to fix the radiator himself (not a plumber). He took it off the wall and walked downstairs with it to fix it in the garden. He's managed to leave a trial of oily black water from the front bedroom all the way down the stairs, along the hall and across the living room to the patio doors.

I could never get those stains out. And he didn't even fix the bloody radiator

I was genuinely heartbroken.

We bought a gorgeous £1,000 dark grey carpet for the hall, stairs and landing. Two weeks later, my stepson walked some sort of tar into the house on his shoes, all the way up to his bedroom. DH used a concoction from the internet to try to fix it but it took the colour out of the carpet, so we have pale patches all over it. I varied from raging to almost crying.

Queenofcrime · 14/07/2024 22:26

My ex-DH bought a sheet of glass to frame a large picture painted on cloth which we had bought on holiday. On the way home from the shop he dropped it on the pavement where it smashed into a thousand pieces. He had to go back to the shop and buy a new sheet of gkass, which luckily he didn't drop.

@Whatmonth get your teapot, you've been waiting long enough. But tell your DH on pain of death to not even look at it, nevermind touch it😅

DS2 is very clumsy I hide my good China when he’s home from university and get it out again to use when he’d gone back

Our carpet fitter was still laying the carpet when the dog ran in and scooched his butt across the middle. Left a delightful brown stripe!!

MaidOfAle · 14/07/2024 23:29

I'd just finished laying my living room carpet tiles when DCat came in and decided to sharpen his claws, pulling a loop loose.

Brand new pristine new-build house - stayed that way for all of 20 minutes until the removal men tracked mud all over the carpets, broke two of the doors, took a chunk out of the kitchen countertop, and scraped the wall all the way from the front door to the bedroom upstairs.

OMG I would have totally shot them!!! 😵😵‍💫

A fella my dad worked with in the mid '70s saved up & bought a beautiful e type jag. He collected it from the dealership & drove out in front of a lorry & wrote it off 😱 (fortunately he wasn't injured). He sat at the side of the road and cried-he hadn't even insured it yet!

When DCat lies across my chest and purrs, the damaged carpet tiles stop mattering. There's no love like the unconditional love of a cat or dog.

Heyhoitsme · 15/07/2024 06:01

Brand new hall and stair carpet. Our young grandson vomited profusely. Despite a thorough cleaning there is a massive stain.

reallifeboogie · 15/07/2024 06:02

Not me but march 2nd this year I saw a 24 reg car on the back of a recovery truck completely and utterly smashed up. One day old. Just hope the driver was OK because it must have rolled by the damage that was done.

laraitopbanana · 15/07/2024 07:05

When I was 8/9, my grandma bought me magnificent light peach shoes, floral type and with satin ruban as laces. I was super chuffed!!!
when I was to go for a walk with grandpa, I insisted that I take them and would be very careful to it…well…grandpa didn’t have the time to say « don’t jump in… » that I already did. It was quicksand mud…my grandad had to fetch a tall strong piece of wood very fast as I was slowly going in….

I had to come back with the muddy shoes (and muddy half my calves) under the look of my grandma.

oops.

Years ago my grandmother had expensive carpet put down in her flat. She had waited and saved up for it until the time was right for her, as all GC and GGC were grown up enough so no more accidents.

Some of us GC had dogs but wouldn't dream of taking them to our GM, as they knew she would worry about the risk to her carpet. However GM's neighbour did not have any such scruples and persuaded GM (in her 80s at the time) to let her bring her dog with her on a visit. She brushed aside GM's concerns that the dog might damage her new carpet; 'My Fifi would never do that'.

Of course Fifi peed on the carpet. My GM (not the neighbour) scrubbed and scrubbed but couldn't get the stain out. In the end she had to put a small rug over the stain, but it was in a really odd place for a rug so visitors frequently commented on it and my poor GM then tried to make light of it. We could all tell she was quietly devastated but not wanting to make a fuss.

The rug also had to be in a traffic area so was a trip risk to my GM.

Every time we visited the rug was there, a lasting reminder of the time 2 stupid bitches came to visit (with apologies to dog lovers). Even decades after, with my GM having passed away, I sometimes get a rage at the memory of it.

I bought a Poetry tunic. Expensive (for me) so I'm still paying for it. I knew I shouldn't buy it because I had a similar one previously and it seemed to attract grease stains which I embroidered over until it was covered in stitches. Anyway, first time on: two stains. I used Vanish and a normal wash but they stayed. Until, and this is a good news story, I tried Vanish oxi-action spray yesterday and it worked!

So don't give up OP, if the frame is just scuffed it will take the framer minutes to repaint it or replace the side that's damaged.

Bloody hate all workmen, kitchen fitter bashed our new American fridge freezer, &scratched our new radiator. Gas engineer bashed our new front door with his step ladders, trying to carry too much stuff 😩 decorater caught our expensive wall paper with his ladder, proceeded to stick the torn paper over the hole (my eye went straight to) bloody hate the all- no respect!

Rosejasmine · 15/07/2024 11:22

About 40 years ago, my dad bought my mum had a brand new little car (the first new one she’d ever had). On day one, she hit the accelerator instead of the brake, smashed it into the house (damaging the house). The car went in to the garage to repair the knackered bumper and lights and the garage had a major fire overnight and the car was literally toast. My dad bought her a second hand car after that…

Goodtogossip · 15/07/2024 11:41

Bought a new car & parked it up next to my old car to transfer car seats into it. Pulled away & scrapped my new car on the tow eye sticking out the front of my old car. I hadn't even had the new car for an hour!

And on another thread a woman was called controlling and a snob for wanting to be a shoe free household! We are, but our 20yr old DD still tries to sneak about with her Dr Martens on....dog shit all over the downstairs carpets 😩

I bought a hedge trimmer a couple of years ago and, within five minutes, accidentally cut through the power cable.

I did this, not once, but twice! The third one I purchased was cordless....

Allthehorsesintheworld · 15/07/2024 12:57

Not new but it was going onto a new home and not into landfill so I felt really pleased about that. Carried shower screen carefully through the door to hand it to its new owner and it shattered into a million pieces, leaving me just holding the plastic/ metal top. Apparently it’s called thermal shock. It wasn’t even that cold.

You should be able to claim on insurance for that.

It's not just temperature. You can hit this glass with a hammer all day and nothing may happen, but bump the corner and you've had it.
